All thought of any other topic of conversation was entirely forgotten, now. He watched Ren absorb the impact, breathe, and tighten his grip on his coffee mug.
It was never a nice thing to let someone down, and despite feeling sure enough that it was the right thing to do, putting Ren in distress tied a knot in his stomach. Blundering forward was the only way to make it through, but he was a little dismayed by the question. "Let me be clear," he said. "You've done absolutely nothing wrong. It doesn't have anything to do with that at all. You've been wonderful. You were extremely generous about the whole mess, which is more than I deserve after keeping you in the dark."
