In Progress

She didn’t sleep well in crowded places and every day it felt like Grimmauld was becoming more and more crowded. She preferred silence and solitude. She liked the familiar to the unfamiliar. She felt like she was living in some sort of hippy commune full of free love and she was trapped behind a fence unable to visit it. Percy was on her mind more times than not but how could he be any other way? He was her husband after all. They should have been out in the quiet of their own place putting children inside to fill it with laughter. She barely saw him enough to produce children not that it was even something up for consideration with everything that was going on in the world around them.

The festive cheer of the week with weddings and new guests flooding in had her in a weird mood as it was. She waited until the cheerful laughter faded into people’s bedrooms before she took to the kitchens. She often came there when she didn’t feel like reading. She wasn’t much in the mood for cooking either but she could do for a little eating. She raided the cabinets for a tin of biscuits and poured herself a mug of Ever-Warm Cocoa taking it to a table.

She clicked on the wireless with an absent hand hit looking for anything to fill the space in the silence. Too much noise wasn’t great but she didn’t much care for silence either. Sometimes it was sort of scary around the old house when it got too quiet. She made a face when one of the up and coming bands poured out to her ears sounding like complete rubbish. She wasn’t quite sure when she’d turned into an old lady who thought a majority of it sounded like racket. She switched stations after a few moments happy to find peaceful old standards. She could deal with that much easier.

She found herself tapping herself her feet against the floor and humming along as she ate despite herself shortly after cutting it on. She never turned it loud enough to cause a real disturbance.

Anthony wasn't tired. He'd tried, he really had, but he couldn't sleep for the life of him. After an hour of tossing and turning and probably keeping Draco awake, he slipped out of the room, shuffling aimlessly through the halls until he ended up outside of the kitchen. Maybe he was lured into the room by the soft music, maybe it was just aimless wandering, but either way, he peered into the room, relaxing slightly when he saw that it was Penny in the room and not Mrs. Weasley. He didn't know if he could handle her mothering at the moment.

He knocked gently on the doorframe, giving Penny a hesitant smile as he took a few steps into the room. "May I join you?" he asked quietly.

Penny smiled at the sight of the dark-haired boy in the door frame. She stopped tapping her toes a bit embarrassed that she was getting carried away with the music and midnight snacks. She extended her arm out in the direction of the door with the biscuit tin in hand as if to invite him in to have some with her. There was plenty of space for another body to take up space in the kitchen.

“C’mon in, Anthony!” she told him before giving him an inquisitive, sisterly look. She knew why she was up but she couldn’t help but wonder what was keeping him up to. Her mind instantly went through the new additions and she had an idea or two whether they were correct or not. “Trouble in paradise with the new roommate?”

Anthony shook his head, stepping into the kitchen and carefully selecting a chocolate biscuit from the tin. He slid into a seat at the table, nibbling at it absently. He wasn't particularly hungry, but really, chocolate made everything better. Maybe it would work here. "No, everything with Draco is fine. I just...couldn't sleep. Didn't want to wake him." No, this definitely had nothing to do with Draco. It was all Anthony and his horrible habit of over-analyzing everything.

Penny was glad that there wasn’t roommate drama actually. She wasn’t so sure there was much more expansion and addition they could do before they started shoving cots everywhere. They were crowded enough without it looking like some sort of makeshift war hospital. She sipped her cocoa thoughtfully before taking another bite of her biscuit. “This must be the first meeting of the Grimmauld Insomniacs Club then,” she told him after a moment. “I knew I was forgetting something important on my calendar.”

Anthony managed a smile, shrugging gently. "If I'd've known there was a club, we would've had a meeting before this." Not that he was necessarily an insomniac. More often than not it was just his choice to stay up. Tonight was special, though, it seemed. He actually wanted to sleep, and he just couldn't, not with everything that was going through his head.

It was Penny’s opinion that no one asked to be incapable of sleep. There were good reasons to stay up all night but war, intolerance, and captivity were not any of them. She felt like a captive bird really. She was fluttering her wings wanting to get out but she was moving no where. There was only so many places she could go and it sort of sucked on multiple levels. “You tell me what’s going on in your head and I’ll tell you what’s going on in mine?” she suggested in hopes of making this club meeting adjourn before everyone else came down for breakfast.

Anthony blushed suddenly at the mention of the thoughts going through his head, lowering his gaze to the table. "It... It's kind of a long story, I suppose. But mostly just...Terry and Michael, really. ...It's complicated." It really truly was, too. He didn't know how to talk about how their relationships had changed so recently, just that they loved each other. "I don't know what exactly to say about it, really. Just... love them, you know?"

Penny wasn’t deaf. She wasn’t stupid either and they did all share close quarters. She never quite knew how to breech the subject because well it was a weird one for her. She didn’t really care that they were all having relations with each other. She just didn’t know what to say about it. She couldn’t know what homosexual relationship were like because she’d only ever fancied people of the male variety. Really she’d only ever seriously fancied one in particular. “I’m afraid I’ve not got much experience with multiple partners,” she offered honestly enough. “I had a hard enough time making the one that married me want me more than anything else – No one else really ever made their desire known. I imagine in some way there would always be one person loving one more than the other though. We’re not really programmed to share. Someone’s going to end up hurt or left out… that’s what I think anyways. I suppose I could see how it might be complicated.”

"I know," Anthony said quietly. "And that's... It's my biggest fear right now. That they'll look at each other and wonder what they need me for. ...I don't know if I can handle that, it's... I don't just love them, they're my best mates, you know? I mean, they've always been there. Terry saved my life, for godsakes. I don't want to think of them every not... being there." Bugger, now he'd done it. He'd gone and gotten himself all melancholy and broody and damn it, he hated feeling like this, especially when things were going so well. "Sorry. 've rather gone and brought the mood down, haven't I?"

"Don't - Here’s the thing," Penny started in response. She took special care to form her words properly in this. He needed to know that how he was feeling was perfectly normal. "… We all wonder if the people we love are going to always be there with us. Percy is about as dependable as they come but that doesn’t mean I don’t fear that one day he’s going to find someone that comes without the complications and lies. The Ministry still thinks he’s mindlessly following their side. Do you have any idea it how easy it would be for him to find a nice, Pure-blooded girl and never look back?" The melancholy mood must have been catching just thinking about it made her mind spin and her blood boil. She wondered how much of that was their wedding bond and how much of it was just some innate jealousy toward all the beautiful Pureblooded girls that could have provided what she couldn’t at this point. “… You have to have a little faith in them,” she told him after a long moment. “You have to trust that you’re just as important to them as they are to you… or you’ll just end up driving yourself mad. ”

"I know," Anthony whispered, staring down at the table for a long moment before looking up to give Penny a small smile. "Sorry. ...And you don't have anything to worry about, you know. I've seen you and Percy together. He can't take his eyes off you long enough to even notice anyone else."

It didn’t make her feel any better. It had been brooding under the surface for sometime now. It was only a matter of time before it all came oozing up. She was going mad in this place really. She felt horrid for going off in such a way on Anthony though. She hadn’t really been directing anything toward him. She just… she thought everyone’s issues were so trivial. She hadn’t used to think like this. She hadn’t always been so bitter and angry. The more time she spent in this place the more affected she was becoming. The dreamer was slowly treading toward disillusionment. She loved Percy but things weren’t progressing with this war in their favour. It was only a matter of time before they had to do something even if was facing facts. So many people were just accepting things as they were. The status quo of hatred and injustice was becoming acceptable. She sometimes thought he would be better off if he just left her and moved on with his life. She wanted to curse and throw hissy fits. She acted her age for the time being. “No, I’m sorry,” she told him after a moment feeling like a scolded school girl. “Michael and Terry care for you a great deal. I don’t think you have to worry about them abandoning you in the end. Things will work out how they’re supposed to for you… Good things happen to good people, Anthony. You’re a good person.”
