Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
WHO: Molly, Tonks, and OPEN (to Number 12 Residents)
WHAT: Fussing around the kitchen
WHEN: 13 March, afternoon
WHERE: The kitchen, Headquarters
RATING: PG for now
Incomplete

Molly hummed thoughtfully as she surveyed the room before her. Sparkling clean, just the way she liked it, of course, but distinctly lacking in occupants. Usually there was someone in the kitchen with her, whether it be Terry eating biscuits and moaning about Michael and Anthony or Remus insisting that he didn't need fussing over. But hardly anyone had made an appearance in the kitchen today outside of meal time. Not a single unexpected visitor to fuss over.

Well. She didn't need there to be someone to fuss over to do some baking. Humming to herself, she gathered together the ingredients for the lemon biscuits Percy loved. He'd eaten the last of them the other day, and she had yet to replace them.

Tonks was nervous. Petrified, scared out of her wits, terrified, whatever the right word was. In two days, she and Remus were getting married, and her journal conversation with Justin the night before had made her realise exactly how half-baked the whole wedding really was.

But did it matter? Not really, she decided. Not at all. What mattered was that she was there, Remus was there, and someone to marry them was there. It didn't matter what colour her dress was or whether or not there were flowers and decorations or even a cake. The only thing that mattered for her was Remus. She'd go starkers if she had to, although she was hoping it didn't come to that.

Unable to stay in their room any longer, Tonks managed to make her way to the kitchen, looking for a quiet place to prop her knee up--how she was going to get down that bloody aisle, she had no idea--and maybe read for a little. She needed to calm down. Hot chocolate might've been in order as well, she figured, but she didn't trust herself to use the stove properly.

Not expecting anyone else to be there, she was taken aback when she saw Molly. Although really, why should she have been?

Grinning widely, she eased herself down onto the chair. At least she didn't have to use those bloody crutches all the time, she figured. A few rooms down didn't hurt too much. "Molly!" she said happily. "How are you, eh? Got anything to nibble on, by chance?"

Molly had just finished scooping the dough onto the first baking sheet when Tonks came into the kitchen, and she turned to give her a gentle smile. "I think asking how you are would be a better question. How are the wedding plans coming along? Your knee isn't bothering you too badly, is it?" Merlin, she hoped not, the poor thing had been through enough. She brought what was left of the chocolate biscuits to the table and waved a hand at the stove. "If you don't care for the chocolate, I'm making a batch of the lemon that Percy likes. It should only be a few minutes. Would you like something to drink, dear?

"Me? Oh, I'm fine," said Tonks brightly, and she meant it. "Wedding plans are...well. Justin's going dress shopping with me today, so hopefully that'll take care of itself before I have to spend two days at it. We were wondering if you might want to make the cake? If you've got time," she added quickly. "I mean, really, it's all right if you don't, please don't feel like you have to.

"Other than that...I'm nervous, but I'm okay." She gave her a wide smile. "To be expected and all, yeah? My knee's better than it was. I can move around now, which is brilliant, because it'd be horribly embarrassing to do the ceremony from the bedroom, with everyone crowding around and trying to see. But it's fine. I'm not complaining," she promised.

Eyeing the biscuits Molly was making, she could already feel her mouth water. "Lemon biscuits sound brilliant, Molly. And no, nothing to drink," she added, not wanting to be a pest. "Thank you though. So how've you been lately?" She had no idea if Molly and Percy were on speaking terms. "Everything all right and all? The boys not giving you too much trouble, I hope?"

She was just the sweetest thing, wasn't she? Molly smiled brightly, taking a seat at the table with Tonks while she waited for the biscuits to bake. "I would love to make the cake for you, dear. I promise you, it's absolutely no trouble at all. Here," she murmured, flicking her wand and conjuring a piece of parchment and a self-inking quill. "You write down everything you want in a cake, and don't you worry a bit about how extravagant it might be. Just...think of it as my wedding gift to you, if you like."

Patting Tonks' hand gently, Molly flicked her wand and directed the rest of the biscuit mixture to scoop itself onto baking sheets. Having a conversation with the bride-to-be was a much better way to pass the time. "The biscuits will be out soon. And it's perfectly normal to be nervous. I can't tell you how nervous I was went Arthur and I married. We never even had a proper ceremony, you know, but standing in front of the judge was... Well. It was an experience, to say the least." Her smile turned a bit sad for a moment before she pushed the thoughts away, shaking her head. Those were thoughts for another time. "Are you sure you don't want anything to drink, dear? It's no trouble."

"Oh!" said Tonks when presented with quill and parchment. She hadn't even thought of what she wanted in the cake. What was there to have in a cake, really? "Thank you, Molly--that's brilliant of you, that is." Giving her a smile, she took the quill, scribbled down a few things, and handed it back to her happily. "There we go! All done." All it said was 'chocolate cake and chocolate frosting. No embarrassing statues, please'.

Tonks watched, as she always did, fascinated as Molly handled the biscuits with her wand. It was a foreign concept to her, cooking and baking, and it baffled her how anyone could do that without burning the house down. It would be a vast improvement, seeing Grimmauld Place in ashes and smoke, she thought grimmly.

When Molly mentioned Arthur, Tonks immediately felt guilty. Why'd she have to bugger it up? She wasn't the best at tact or sensitivity, although she tried. "I'm sorry," she said quietly after a moment, not knowing what else to say. She couldn't imagine losing Remus, and they'd only been together for a short time. Compared to what Molly and Arthur had had...she couldn't imagine how much pain Molly must've been in, even now still.

Grateful for the change of subject, Tonks decided that maybe it'd be best, distracting Molly. "I don't want to be a bother," she said apologetically, "but if it's not too much trouble, hot chocolate might be nice?"

Molly tucked the parchment into her pocket so she wouldn't lose it, shaking her head and giving Tonks' hand another pat. "You have nothing to be sorry for, dear," she told her warmly. "I like talking about him. I need to talk about him. It helps." Giving Tonks another smile, Molly flicked her wand again, putting the kettle on and summoning what she would need for hot chocolate from the cupboards.

"Now," she started, giving Tonks her full attention once more. "Arthur and I were married for quite a long time, so really, I think we've gone through everything marriage can throw at a couple. So if you'd like to know anything, anything at all, about being married, I want you to know that you can ask me. On my honor as a mother, I won't breathe a word to anyone."

Tonks smiled faintly, partially relieved she hadn't upset Molly, partially horrified that she'd even let things get that far. Still, taking that as an invitation to talk a little about Molly and Arthur, she took a deep breath and considered her question for a moment. "How long was it before you felt you knew Arthur as well as everyone else thought you did?" Tonks bit her lip for a moment. "D'you think we're doing this too quickly? I mean, a month ago...a month ago we weren't even together properly. It was just...well, you know. A few years ago, then now. We didn't do things properly at all, you know, if there is even a proper way to do it. I'm not having doubts," she added quickly. "I'm just worried that he might. Or that everyone else is secretly thinking we'll fail."

Tonks' smiled widened. "Yeah? Thanks, Molly. I think I'll take you up on that." She grew quiet for a moment, then said softly, "How does it change once you're married? And once you start having babies? We both want babies," she added. "I don't know how long it'll be before we start. Most likely after the war's ended."

"There's no 'proper' way of doing things, dear," Molly told her reassuringly, lips curving into a fond smile. "Goodness knows the way Arthur and I did things was far from our parents' ideas of 'proper.' We were supposed to have a ceremony with all of our relatives and guests from everywhere. Instead, we eloped, right after we left school. Our parents were furious, but it was perfect, it really was. I knew Arthur was going to be the one I married the first time he kissed me." She sighed happily at the memory, playing absently with the ring around her finger. "It was the beginning of seventh year, in the Gryffindor common room. We were arguing about something, I don't even remember what it was any more, but oh, I was furious. I was going off on him, and he told me to belt up. I told him to make me, and he kissed me. And that was it. We were engaged by spring, married by summer."

Merlin it had been a long time since she'd thought of that first kiss. Pressing her lips together to keep her emotions in check, she looked away and blinked quickly until she felt she was under control. Turning back to Tonks, Molly gently cupped her cheek and smiled softly. "Remus loves you. I can see it whenever he looks at you. The two of you are as much of a match as Arthur and I were, so don't you dare care what anyone else is thinking. Marriage is... It's amazing and frightening and one of the greatest experiences you'll ever have, and things only get better when you have your first child. Having Bill brought us closer together than I had ever imagined, and with each birth after that, we only fell more in love. No matter when you decide to have children, it's a blessing. ...You and Remus are going to live a long, happy life together."
