Blaise rapped gently on Mother's bedroom door. She'd been in her chambers for most of the day, it seemed, not even coming out for meals. Moopsy had brought her a breakfast tray which had been sent back untouched. Blaise had sighed but done nothing; Mother not eating was growing increasingly more common, much to his worry. "Mother?" he called out through the door. "I'm sorry to bother you..."
The door swung open to reveal Isabella standing just behind it. Blaise was relieved to see that she appeared calm and utterly debonair. She'd dressed in one of her glorious silken gowns, and her hair had been done up in an elaborate style. "Yes, my darling?" she asked, a small smile on her lips.
Smiling in reply, Blaise took her hand and kissed it. "Nothing, Mother," he said, shaking his head. "I just wanted to see if you were ready for the party."
"Of course, silly boy," she answered, patting his cheek fondly. "I've been in my room all day deciding what to wear. I haven't seen most of your friends in such a long time. I really am glad you're back." She swept past him and made her way down towards the front parlour, where the party would begin. Much of the Manse had been opened up for the occasion, and eventually the guests would be ushered into the ballroom. Isabella had long ago purchased a full set of enchanted instruments that could play themselves, everything from classical implements like flutes and violins to more modern conveniences a la Muggle-style guitars. They had only to be commanded to play a certain style of music and they would obey, so they were perfect for a party like this, providing whatever the guests' tastes might be.
Blaise heaved a happy sigh as Isabella made her way through the corridors, clearly the Lady of the Manor in full posession of her faculties. Perhaps he was worrying for nothing. It seemed that she was perfectly fine tonight. Maybe this was exactly what she had needed to pull her from her dark moods.
"The parlour looks perfect, dearest," Isabella said to him once they'd gone in. Blaise had decided to hire out a caterer rather than have the elves try to anticipate the tastes of of all his guests. Besides, it would be good for the economy to give a bit of work to the halfbloods down on their luck. The woman he'd comissioned had been ecstatic to fill out the order, and even now she was still working in the kitchens, preparing a second wave of delicacies. The finest collection of wines and liquors were set out, and the room had been done up in dancing faery lights.
"Yes, I think it rather will be the finest Spring-Welcoming yet," Blaise remarked, proud of his accomplishment. "Much nicer than anything the Malfoys ever threw, wouldn't you say?"
Isabella's face darkened a little at the mention of the Malfoys, but it quickly passed. "Yes, my love," she agreed. "It will be splendid. You seem to have everything in hand. I'm going to go check on a few of the more sensitive wards before our guests arrive. You'll be fine on your own, yes?"
Blaise nodded, and Isabella gracefully departed from the room. He snatched up a glass of wine and called for Moopsy. The aged elf appeared in a crack and looked up at him adoringly. "You may drop the Unwelcoming charm," he said to her with a grin. "It's time to let our guests arrive."
