Characters; Isaac Hawthorne & Derrick Stiles
Date/Time; September 11 / an hour after dinner
Where; Going to Trees by the Lake
Warnings; G
Status; incomplete

While Isaac Hawthorne couldn't claim to have never been stood up before in his life, this was quite honestly the first time – aside from that Charms incident in third year – that he had been stood up by one Derrick Stiles. They were supposed to have headed down to the Library after dinner to start their plans for their proposed business after Hogwarts together but Derrick had not only neither showed up in the Great Hall for their meals, he had also left Isaac standing outside the Library for almost a full hour.

It was after the last group of giggling first year girls that Isaac had finally realized his buddy had flaked out on their meeting. There was no chance of him getting the times wrong either, since 'every Sunday, after dinner' was a pretty hard time to err with.

Where would a usual seventh year, Hufflepuff boy with weird compulsions usually hide if he were to flake out on an all important business meeting? Outside. Or in the loo, but somehow Isaac didn't think Derrick 's compulsions this time ran in that direction.

He pulled his sweater out of his school bag and shrugged it on before he headed outside. There was Derrick hunting to be had!

Derrick would never have flaked out on Isaac, that is if he was aware he was doing it. He honestly had forgotten about most everything except what had happened on Thursday. He still couldn't get over the fact that- wait no he couldn't understand it, all his instant reactions said that Mischa should be lying. She couldn't like him that way, no girl that pretty and that nice would like him like that. His inner voice, his voice of reason that he was ignoring was telling him the truth. She had meant her words, had he not seen her hurt reaction at his silence? She was near and tears and he should have gone to her. He hadn't, and he hasn't seen her around since and it was starting to hurt. He felt like such a git, it was that simple.

So with his head mulling that over non-stop since Thursday he had let all other meetings slip out of his head. He had even walked into the wrong classroom and sat down on Friday. The first years still flash an amused grin at him in the halls. If he wasn't doing headboy duties, or in class, he was out by the lake. Hiding along the tree line, like he was at the moment. Book in lap, but completely ignored as he watched the surface of the lake.

Was it too late to go talk to Mischa? Would she forgive him for being a complete idiot? This was the twentith time that he had thought about this today, or maybe the twenty-fifth. He was driving himself mad.

It was only a rough twelve minute jog from the castle to the great lake, though it took a near fifteen extra minutes for Isaac to finally locate his missing friend. Apparently, the trees must have grown over summer or they uprooted themselves and moved around since Isaac had found himself tripping over miscellaneous roots that he could have sworn did not exist last year.

"You," he greeted Derrick when he finally spotted the boy nestled in the grove, "you git, I waited for you for an hour and here I find you standing me up for a book?" He crossed his arms and gave of the appearance of being extremely annoyed… or at least he would if he didn't have an eyebrow quirked at the same time.

Perhaps he was intruding? He had known the Hufflepuff for a good six years and whenever there was that wrinkled frown on the other's face, it usually meant he was facing some crisis – in his definition anyways – of one sort or another. Though Isaac couldn't see what issue could be bothering Derrick this early in the year, NEWTs were a good few months away, no extreme pranks had been yet played and the daily hazing from some Slytherins weren't a change from last year… unless, "Are you still troubled over the toilet issues? They have pretty much perfumed out the entire right wing with Trelawney's incense already, you know. You were there."

Derrick jumped, the book popping out of his lap and onto the ground. He hadn't expected anyone to come find him. He winced as Isaac stated how long he had waited for him, he had completely forgotten! He jumped up with an apologetic look, hitting his head on a low hanging branch Derrick cursed and tumbled backwards into another tree. Bending over her clutched at his head, some not so creative curses flew out alongside some hissing.

As the pain subsided enough he straightened up, looking carefully above him so he didn't hit his head again. "Isaac I am sorry, you know I didn't mean it. I wouldn't of- I am not troubled over the toilet issues." Those were nothing compared to his current issues.

Looking at Isaac he sighed, shoulders dropping. "Mischa mate, you called it and I don't know what to do." He rubbed the sore spot on his head a bit.

Watching Derrick stumble over himself made Isaac feel slightly - just slightly! - better about having been stood up. It was a wicked thought that he couldn't help but allow to take over, karma had to exist in some form. He did his best to refrain from smirking over the show.

His revelations, on the other hand, was unexpected. "Mischa?" he echoed, unsure of what exactly Derrick had meant. What had he called on about Mischa lately? The last time he mentioned her was during the summer hols about Derrick having plenty of time to be naughty with the blonde beauty over. Though he did say that, the chances of Derrick taking it up would have been close to nil. The only other logical explanation would have been that she finally... "she told you?"

His eyes went slightly round in surprise, and all he could add was an unintelligent, "whoa." That was how many years in counting? It wasn't hard to see the crush from a mile away with the obvious tell-tale signs of blushing and adoring gazes, the fact that she finally revealed it was a shocker. "Whoa, hold on a minute. What do you mean you don't know what to do? What did you do when she told you?"

Derrick nearly jumped at Isaac when he stated 'she told you', that bloody well meant that Isaac had known. He had known and didn't tell him! What sort of friend is that! He left Derrick to get a surprise attacked, and he should know exactly what happens when Derrick was in those situations.

"Yes Issy she told, and by your reaction you knew! how could you not tell me!" Derrick started pacing, fingers tapping patterns that only made sense to him upon his thigh. "I Completely froze!" As if to stress his words he froze, looking at Isaac before continuing. "She tore off before I collected a shred of sense in my head." He grabbed off his hat, the hat that Mischa had given him over the summer, his other hand ran through his hair.

"I am such a git, I saw tears Issy and I didn't even run after her!" He threw the hat against the tree, looked at it and felt guilty. Snatching it up he dusted off the bits that stuck to it. "I hurt her. I hurt Mischa."

"Er," Isaac backed up a few feet when Derrick had turned to him, unsure of what to say. There was no way Derrick could turn the situation around on him either, he had nothing to do with the romantic drama, nothing at all! So, he held up his arms as a peace offering and tried to voice some reason. "I couldn't have told you, mate, that's something that's left to the confessor to do.

"It could have been worst. Imagine if I had told you and she wasn't ready to sing the chorus and you would have been all awkward with her." And it wasn't like he hadn't left hints left and right, Isaac had pretty much teased Mischa over her crush whenever the opportunity presented itself. It wasn't his fault Derrick was oblivious. Though, it was still beyond him that his quirky friend was going to get a girlfriend first. Mischa was so sweet natured and loyal, somehow Isaac wouldn't be surprised if they ended up married, having ten kids and becoming the next big wizarding clan. He hoped Derrick wasn't going to hang up their future business plans when he was married.

...and apparently he had trailed off too far into this thoughts because what was he hearing now, tears? "What? Why didn't you-- Derrick, what do you think of Mischa? Honest thoughts, I'm your friend first so don't worry about me repeating anything, what do you think of her?"

Derrick backed off the blame game, he knew that Isaac hadn't purposely left Derrick in the dark. It had been better off this way, Derrick knew this, he truly would have been awkward around her until she finally told him. She would have noticed something was up. Still picking at the hat he sighed, shoulders slumping a bit. He thought about Isaac's question, it was one that he himself had asked numerous times. He started to reply then stopped, sticking the hat in his back pocket of his trousers.

Without something to play with he resorted to tapping his thigh again. "Honestly I am still tying to really understand them." He took a few breaths, organizing the things in some semblance of order. "She is... she is nice, sweet, honest, easy to talk to, easy to trust..." He trailed off loosing himself a bit in thought, his fingers slowing down their tapping to an almost standstill.

"She is my other best mate, like you... but not quite the same." His fingers stopped completely, his eye focused on something laying upon the ground in front of him. "She is special...I don't want to loose her." He stuffed his hands into his hair and squatted down, leaning his elbows on his bent legs. "I am useless in these situations."

Isaac held up a hand to stall Derrick from getting on another train of thought. "I'm asking how you feel about her, not for you to describe her. We all know how Mischa is like and that she's your best mate too. Just, is there anything else?"

He was pretty sure there wasn't a bloke at Hogwarts who wouldn't be flattered if Mischa Mitchell confessed her love to them. It was more along the lines of would those blokes be good for her? Derrick was one of his best mates and Isaac would trust him with his life but, if Derrick was just going to stumble along and do what he thought was expected of him then it would just hurt Mischa in the long run.

"Think clearly about your answer before you give it to her. You might end up hurting her more if you give a half-hearted attempt." He patted him on the shoulder, "she's your best mate first, so she'll understand whether your response is positive or negative. Just don't go half-assed and hurt her a few months down the road."

Derrick gave an exasperated sigh, shaking his head. "What constitutes as a full attempt? What constitutes as feelings that would mean I love her? I understand how to diagnose this as much as my uncle knows how to diagnose a cold on a hippo." Lifting his head off his hands he grabbed the hat out of his back pocket, looking at it he ran his thumb along the knit.

"If I told you that seeing that hurt look on her face, the single tear drip down her cheek, was the worst thing I have experienced. That I actually couldn't sleep more than an a couple of hours Thursday night because I kept seeing it when I closed my eyes. That over the weekend I've been thinking certain things about her I would never usually let myself think of. What would you say?" Derrick chanced a look at Isaac, his hand clenching onto the hat.

"Would you say that it was just guilt? That I am just thinking these things because the chance is there?" He looked back down, his eyes burning a bit. "Its to the point that I can't imagine seeing her anywhere else but beside me, just like she has been all these years." He hated being this uncomfortable in his own skin, it felt tight, awkward, and altogether alien.

"A full-hearted attempt is one that leaves any doubt out the window." Isaac said, as if he were quoting something - probably from the Hawthorne dictionary. "Basically, don't go for it if you aren't absolutely you're certain you want it. And if you're absolutely certain you want it, then go pursue her all passionately like a Gryffindor!"

He couldn't tell Derrick whether those feelings he had were of guilt or romance, but one thing was certain, "you care a lot about her well being, obviously. Those certain things you've never usually thought of... how do you feel thinking about them?"

That was always a possibility, yes. When a delicious pie falls onto the table in front of you it's hard not to salivate and want to eat it. But then again, if it's a pie you've always enjoyed eating then why-- Isaac shook his head, perhaps it was a good idea he wasn't saying any of his analogies out loud. They would probably do more harm than good in this situation. "Sort your feelings out, mate. Do you feel the romantic tug or not? Would you be jealous if she was feeling the pink auras around another bloke?"

He leaned in closer to the other and lowered his voice, "have you ever fancied the thought of snogging her?"

Derrick couldn't help but flash Isaac an odd look, he sounded like confucius, or one of those old wise men. If he was feeling more himself he might have even poked fun at Isaac for it, but he was having a hard time focusing on much of anything. Except for the Mischa topic, and even that was scattered from one angle to the next. He snorted at the Gryffindor comment, when was Derrick that bull headed to act like a Gryffindor? Never, he was the one that needed to think things through until they were dissected from every angle. Was this a smart thing to do with a potential love situation? Isaac seemed to think so... well mostly he did from what Derrick grasped. This was good, that meant Derrick could mull it over some more yes?

How did he think about those thoughts? Honestly? He felt like a child that stumbled onto something sweet he wasn't allowed to have. He wanted it, in a way, but naturally he was shying away from it. He was afraid of getting hurt, he wasn't known for having too much courage, so this should almost be expected of him right? He wasn't expected to know right away?

Clicking his tongue he continued to stare at the ground lost in thought. It was only Isaac's movement toward him that caught his attention, eyes flicking to look at Isaac they widened and flicked away at his words. "I- Well-" He shut his mouth, his cheeks turning a bright pink. "I-...yes." He closed his eyes, hands coming up to cover his face. He was probably a very nice shade of red right now.

Pfft, Isaac was wise beyond his years. He pretty much brought up Nunnally, didn't he? Granted, he might have done better if he were given the chance to have a second or third try at it, but she was turning out all right. Isaac's words of wisdom was worth their weight in galleons. Perhaps he could start up a consultant firm if his drug business idea with Derrick fell through because he married and had children.

"Well," he shrugged his hands into his pockets and leaned back against a tree trunk to ponder, "is that thought because she's Mischa or is that thought because she's a girl?" They were two separate thought patterns even if Mischa was a girl. "It could be because you fancy her... or be because you're a bloke with hormones. Think long and hard."

Tentatively, he wondered what Mischa was thinking about at the same time. She was definitely not as confused as Derrick was, but still, Isaac wondered if she knew what turmoil she was causing her crush. Then again, Isaac wondered if he should try talking to her too.

The day Derrick dumps the business plan for a girl and family is the day that he becomes a daft fool. It has been his career plan since fifth year! He is going to be in the medical field, family or not, he wouldn't be himself if he didn't.

Currently he wasn't thinking of anything medical, he was instead listening to Isaac closely, at the same time he wanted to numb his brain. It hadn't stopped running in days, he was going mad, and this conversation was shooting it in hyper drive. "First off Isaac, I know I am subject to anything a teenage boy is, but do I seem the type that would run around after my hormones?" He stood up, stretching his legs, his knees pained in protest.

"I've done nothing but think, it is always the same thoughts, nothing new has been showing up in my thought process. I am too wary of venturing deeper into my head." Should he think deeper? Would there be an answer? Derrick was starting to think he would need to talk to Mischa first, to see and converse with her might help him straighten things out some more.

Realizing this he voiced it. "You think talking to her would help me figure it out? Maybe it will spark, or it will dampen what I've been feeling the past few days..." He started pacing again, sliding his hand into his pocket he pulled out the ping-pong sized elastic ball. Tossing it from hand to hand he continued. "Or is that a bad idea? I don't want to make a bigger mess than what has started."

Isaac shrugged, "It's a new thing for you." Or if it wasn't, Derrick sure hadn't told Issy about the last time a fit bird confessed their love to him. Isaac sure hoped this was the first time at least. "But I'm not undermining your moral integrity or anything; let's focus back on your deepest issue, hey? What to do with Mischa."

Talking to Mischa? "…you haven't spoken to her since she confessed?" His brows once again shot to his hairline. He knew the confession could not have been a recent thing and to have not spoken to your best friend for such a long time… "I hope she doesn't think she ruined the friendship already in that case." Silence was probably the worst thing in a situation such as theirs, what if the other party misinterpreted it as total rejection?

"You should talk to her, yes. Tell her that you're still her best friend and that she is still yours – after me, of course – and that you need time to figure out a proper answer to her confession. Just be honest, she knows who you are already." For their sake, Isaac just hoped things didn't get awkward in the meantime.

Oh it was a new thing for Derrick, he wouldn't hide something like this from Isaac. Isaac was his best mate, Isaac new the most about him, and he was to be his business partner no? How could a successful pair of business partners get anywhere hiding things from each other.

Derrick shook his head, no he hadn't. "She seriously took off a minute after she confessed, and it has been a little challenging to find her since then." He continued his pacing the ball carefully being thrown back and forth. "Friday she didn't show up for any classes, not that I was ready to confront her, but I would have if I saw her in pain. You know I would have." He tossed the elastic ball at Isaac, stopping his pacing. "If I know her at all, her hiding like the way she is means probably exactly that, she thinks she has ruined our friendship."

"I will get her after the meeting Monday night, she will show up for that." Not that she had to, but he knew her, she would try to ignore her problems and confront them in her own way by coming to the meeting. He would just have to move fast after the meeting, she would probably try and slip out as soon as he said it was over.
