Characters; Haleigh R.J. Harper and Gabriel Nott
Date/Time; Wednesday, Lunchtime
Where; Outside by the lake
Warnings; PG for cursing
Status; incomplete

Haleigh sat facing the lake, her back pressed against a tree and her fingers drumming the tops of her thighs occasionally. To the untrained eye, it would look as though she was just another student catching some free time before resuming classes, lost in thought. On closer inspection the person would see the almost frantic drumming and indistinct humming that came from her every once in awhile. Her eyes scanned the lake a little too fast, her movements just a bit too jerky. Had the person come any closer to her they probably would have been accosted and unceremoniously mugged, Haleigh quickly rifling through pockets for something, anything.

Haleigh Rowan Jamison Harper was fiending, you see. During the massive kerfuffle that had been her holidays, Haleigh had taken a trip back to the states to go spend time with the bit of family that she could tolerate in America, and had come back to school with a severe addiction to cigarettes and coffee. Seeing as neither of these were in steady supply at school she was now suffering through the classic symptoms of withdrawal. After reducing a first year to tears with a crazed stare and a mumbled threat involving spellotape and blast-ended skrewts, she realized that she was no longer fit for company. So there she sat, against the tree, trying to pull herself together before she ended up doing something worse in the presence of her peers.

Gabriel walked slowly down the snow-covered lawn towards that tree with the figure sitting against it. The soft crunching of the white was the only sound that might have indicated his approached. He didn't particularly figure she would have heard him. He was nearly certain that she was too lost in her own thoughts that any noises around her would be completely lost. Or ignored.

Without a word, he took a seat on the ground next to her. Being accosted wasn't a particular fear of his. Not from Haleigh at least-- he was pretty sure he could pick her up. Stretching out for just a moment he pulled a small intricately formed snowflake, which was obviously candy, from his pocket to offer her. It was a wonder it didn't get crushed as he sat.

Haleigh stared for a minute, her brain running a little differently than usual. I took her a while to process anything other that IneedafagIneedafag, so Gabriel sudden presence was a bit of a shock. She watched as he sat next to her, just on the outskirts of her warming charm and handed her a beautifully formed piece of snowflake candy. "Wow," she murmured softly, hoping she wasn't twitching too much. "Where did you get this?"

She popped it in her mouth, savoring the flavor as it melted over her tongue. "You'll excuse me if I'm not at my wittiest today," she said after a minute. "I'm coming down off a straight cigarette and coffee addiction and I'm not in the best form. "Mmmm," she said absently, closing her eyes and loving how delicious the candy was. "This really is brilliant. It should stave off the craving for about, oh, three seconds." She cracked a grin. "I need something to take my mind off of it. Is that why you've shown up?"

"It's called rupsades." Gabriel mentioned, a smile stretching slowly across his lips. "It's sort of a holiday candy in Portugal." He never really understood why-- there was nothing truly special about it. He'd watch the lady next door make it out of sugar and vinegar mostly. Yet, he couldn't usually get through the holidays without at least a piece of the candy.

"That was one of my reasons." He leaned over to press a soft kiss to her cheek.

Haleigh accepted the kiss as gracefully as she could muster, managing to blush only a little. "Well, thank you anyway," she replied, staring out at the lake. "You must think I'm insane to be out here in the snow just now. While I can't necessarily assure you of my sanity, I can tell you that I'm not cold--I managed to cast a fairly decent warming charm, and the 'shakes' stop me from feeling much of anything," She rolled her eyes. "You know what's weird? As much as am I a witch and I belong in this world, I've spent enough time among muggles to forget that there are physically things different about our bodies. Such as the difference in tolerance for additives."

She sighed and turned slightly, facing Gabriel. She didn't want to admit it, but she had missed his face. She didn't want to admit that she had gotten to a point where there were specifics about him that she had memorized and wanted to see, the brightness of his eyes, his wide, promising mouth. It made her want to reach out and touch the edges just slightly, form the hard-to-win smiles with her hands. "In any case, old friend, what else brings you out here? Can't be the stunning beauty of the snow, you and I know that gets old pretty fast."
