Who: Fletcher, you!
Where: Gardens
When: Noon-ish?
What: Sad nine-year-old

Having stayed in his room for several hours, Fletcher had gotten antsy. He'd decided to take a walk around the facility and look around, and lo and behold what did he find but some pretty gardens. He crouched down next to a patch of flowers to look at them, suddenly wistful again.

What kind of life did he have before getting sick? Maybe he had a garden at home, too... Maybe his mother and father had helped him grow it, or maybe Russel did. That seemed reasonable, but he didn't want to assume anything. But then he had to wonder whether his family was the same as he dreamed them; what if he didn't even have a brother, really? And what if his parents were still dead, or what if they were mean? What if he still wasn't allowed to use alchemy?

Alchemy... Was he even really an alchemist? It's not like it was common for kids his age to be very good at alchemy. What if that was just part of the dream? Idly, he traced out a transmutation circle in the dirt -- nothing that would harm the flowers, just one that would make them grow a little taller. He was nervous doing so; the staff didn't say anything about it not being allowed, but instinctively he wondered, What if Brother finds out? But if he just did it this one time, to find out if he could, and then didn't do it any more it should be fine...

Nothing happened when he tries to activate the circle. He wiped it out and tried another, with the same lack of result. Nothing. So he wasn't an alchemist, or the circles he remembered from his dream were wrong, or... or alchemy itself wasn't real. No one else had said anything about it on those communication devices. What if that had just been a figment of his imagination, too?

He didn't want to, not out in public like this, but Fletcher sniffled, and hiccupped, and started to cry silently.

He had decided some fresh air would do him good. Staying in his room had done nothing to clear his head or set his mind straight. It was a rather inviting day to say the least and he had found his way to the gardens. The doctor's attention was drawn from the view to a small figure hunched down near the flowers.
Though he hadn't met the boy face to face, he had surmised by his age to be the shy creature who had introduced himself as Fletcher. Curious, Kazutaka decided it would be better to watch a moment and not bother him, whatever he was doing.

But the moment the boy started to cry, he just couldn't help himself. The doctor approached him and placed a warm hand on his head.
"There now." he murmured, lowering his voice just enough for Fletcher to hear. "It'll be alright."

Fletcher winced when he felt a hand on his head, starting to shake a little. This was the first person he'd run into since being told what was going on by the staff, and he wasn't so sure he wanted to actually be around people.

He wiped his face with the back of one arm, but the tears kept falling. "B-but..."

XD The boy is in no danger... yet!

Kazutaka strokes the boy's hair a bit, watching him. He remembered vaguely of a blond he held great interest in during his dreams but trying to remember any more past that gave him a splitting headache. He chose to let it be for now.
The doctor crouches down to his eye level and offers him a handkerchief. "Yes...?" he presses further, trying to coax the rest of the sentence out of the boy. He'd been quite the shy specimen, certainly but this only helped to heighten the doctor's interest.
A puzzle he wanted to solve. Ah, but everything here was a puzzle; inhabitants included.

Fletcher took the handkerchief, wiped his face and blew his nose. It wasn't fair, none of it was fair, why was any of this happening?

"How--how do we know what's even real?" he sputtered out, voice wavering. "My family and my--my home and..." He blew his nose again and tried not to start blubbering incoherently. "They, they might not even exist!"

The doctor just couldn't say no. Dusting down the spot beside Fletcher, he sat himself down and moved an arm around the boy. "What do you believe?" Kazutaka asked, watching him a bit. "Would you rather believe what they tell you or believe what you know and try to prove it?"

Somehow, he wish he brought some tissue.

"...I don't know." The handkerchief was very quickly getting too messy to handle. He wiped his nose again. "I don't know, I don't... I don't know. They couldn't've kidnapped me..."

He keeps the hand on the boy's head, still watching him closely. Much too young for his usual tastes, certainly but it looked like the boy was in need of company. And there was something about him.

"Well, it's up to you to decide what you want to believe." he replied, ruffling his hair a bit. "It's your head after all, dear boy..."

He flinched. No one ruffled his hair but Russel, and even he didn't do that very often lately...

"But how do I figure it out?"

"That is up to you... to sort what you wish to believe and what they tell you." he replies. His smile is warm and rather inviting at best. It seems he does believe firmly in what he tells the boy.

But something had to be objectively true, right? If that "dream" was really what had happened to him, why was he here now? He couldn't wrap his head around it; trying just hurt.

But he nodded. He couldn't bring himself to argue. He hated disagreeing with people in positions of authority -- which, given the fact that Fletcher was nine, was pretty much everyone.

He sighed a bit, ruffling the boy's hair a last time before drawing his hand away. "I suppose this will all make sense to us in time." the doctor rested his head on his free hand, staring out into the garden. "There are many more who are just as confused as you are."

At this, he turns his attention back to the boy with a small smile. "Myself included."

Fletcher pulled his knees up, wrapped his arms around them, and half-hid his face behind his legs. That was true... At least he wasn't alone. His tears started to subside, but the hurt inside his chest didn't.

Finally, he realized who he was talking to -- it was that man named Muraki, from earlier. And finally he got up the urge to ask, "Um-- Mr. Muraki? Have you heard of something called alchemy?"

Hm. Alchemy. Now there was something he'd heard of but never quite saw for himself. He had dealings with what most would consider occult but not exactly firsthand experience when it came to alchemy. "Curious question." the doctor murmured in reply, still staring out into the garden. "Yes... In some manner. What of it?"

Fletcher's heart leapt. Maybe it was real. Maybe he hadn't just dreamed it. "I... I dreamed that I was an alchemist," he said, and looked down at the useless transmutation circle by his feet. His voice continued to wobble. "But I tried using it just now, and nothing happened."

He paused a moment, watching the transmutation circle before looking up at Fletcher. Alchemy. Curiouser and curiouser, indeed.
"Perhaps... If you don't believe it to be a dream then there could be some chance it is all real. Perhaps they've found some way to prevent things from happening as we know them to happen." the doctor murmured.

"After all, if it was all a dream, I wouldn't think you would manage a mark as... complicated as that." he added. They reminded him slightly of the spell marks he had come across in his time.

"R-really?" Fletcher regarded the circle again. It seemed simple to him, but he'd been reading alchemy books since, well, he was old enough to read. Or at least, he'd dreamed such. "How could they keep alchemy from working...? It's just science, it should--it should always work..."

The doctor let out a breath, pushing his glasses up with a slender finger before regarding his company. "That... I have no answer to. Once, a man's mind was an open book to me but now it seems that I can't probe any deeper than what you'd usually muster." he said with a small laugh.
"Even your mind is unfathomable..."

Usually, children came so easy to him.

"An... open book?" He peered over at Mr. Muraki, eyes wide with confusion and a little hesitation. That was an odd statement to make. "Um--I'm sorry, I didn't mean to be, um, unfathomable."

The doctor actually laughs at that. Goodness but this child was adorable. "Never you mind, dear boy. I merely meant to say that perhaps... whatever abilities we did have... don't... quite work as well as they did." he considers this, taking a moment to think. "I have no answer for that and how or why but... it is merely a theory."

"Oh..." He doesn't really have an answer for that. Surely the simpler answer is that it's not real, right? That would make things so much easier, but it's so scary to think about. Even if some of it, he dearly wishes didn't happen...

He just looks back down at the circle again.

"Time will tell, I suppose." he sighed and ruffled the boy's hair one last time. That seemed to be the main theme for now. There was so little they knew right now.

And he flinched again, but didn't say anything about it. "R-right."

He looked down at the handkerchief, now balled up in one hand and not very clean. "Um..."

The doctor laughed and shook his head. "Never you mind, Fletcher. Keep it." he replied as he stood up and dusted himself down.
"Are you staying out here? I was thinking of doing some wandering with my free time." he added after a moment, tilting his head slightly.

"Ah-- okay." He stuffed it into a pocket and wiped his hand off on the grass. Hopefully there was somewhere around here to do laundry.

"Um, y-yeah... I just wanted to look at the garden, so..."
