Who: Joel Kulseth and Jane Rusten.
Where: The Bar
What: Celebrating Jane’s birthday, talking through things
When: June 10, 2019
A few days in his new office hardly made Joel feel like he’d settled into the new title. It was an adjustment to reside at the top of the police department's food chain. In the past there’d always been someone with more authority than he held, and now he’d been appointed that someone. He’d been willing to take it on, wouldn’t have accepted Mayor Clarke’s offer if he hadn’t been, but with each new day he realized just how much of an undertaking he faced. They had kids that were greener than any officer he’d met before, a few he’d had to sit down and have some real serious conversations with because of their actions in the months previous, and then there were the ones that had been coasting by on minimum effort. There was more than enough cleanup to keep him busy. But he was grateful to hang that all up for the day, and appreciative that something better than the Capitol’s cafeteria was open to take Jane out for her 30th. She might not have cared much, but he was going to take any opportunity he could to celebrate. Odds were good that things were looking up Austin, but they were still sitting on a backlog of bad days. “You find any gray in your hair this morning?” he asked Jane as he settled into the chair across from her, after he’d set down a drink for both of them. Luckily The Bar was devoid of Hellhounds, so he hadn’t accidentally soured the day by suggesting the get drinks there. He knew his partner well enough to know the likelihood that she was still simmering about their involvement was pretty high. “How about a cane? You get yourself one of those?” Joel smirked before he picked his drink up. “You know, soon as you hit thirty it’s all downhill, Rusten.” |
