A Religious Experience (AO)
A Religious Experience

8 yr old Willow, Xander, Jesse

She eyes the basket on the table and glances at Xander. He's eyeing it too.
She never gets one, its not her holiday after all, and she knows Xander doesn't either, what with his parents being so mean.
She'd never even seen one before, but she did know, thanks to The Easter Beagle, that it was somehow religious. She wished her religion had a holiday that you celebrated with baskets full of chocolate and marshmallow and tiny colorful candy eggs and green plastic grass. Or maybe the grass was candy too?
She wiggles in her seat with an eight-year old's nervousness, desperate now for Jesse to come back before she loses her hold on good manners and steals one of his religious symbols.
Maybe if she didn't touch the chocolate cross it would be okay?
Just when she's sure Xander's about to get up, Jesse and his mom come back with big smiles and two more baskets full of candy. Jesse gives the green one to Xander and his has a big chocolate cross and he touches it reverently, convincing her that this is indeed a sacred religious thing.
But Jesse's mom hands her the yellow basket.
"I'm Jewish," she says, just to make it clear, she doesn't want God to be mad at them.
The nice woman smiles and tells her that hers isn't an Easter basket, it's an Oestara basket. An ancient goddess of spring. It's customary to celebrate spring in this way for thousands of years. And her basket was filled with bunnies and chicks and even some marshmallow ducks. No crosses at all.
Willow smiled and tasted her first ever jelly bean.
