A Tale of Two Brothers (log, continued in comments)
The flashbacks were getting worse. It seemed that the more stressed out Sam became over the demon and the nearing apocalypse, the more he lapsed into memories that were better left unexplored. The stubborn part of him wanted to hide this from his brother for as long as he could because he didn’t want the ‘I told you so.’ And he was doing his best to hide it from Fred because it wasn’t her job to take care of him.
When he slipped into one of these spells, Sam was usually able to feel it coming on and he’d take to wandering about the city. There were times when his wanderings took him outside the wall, like they had on the day he’d met Spiderman. Peter Parker, he corrected himself. It was more polite to call the comic book characters he’d met by their proper names as opposed to the their hero names.
At least, he thought that was correct.
”Where are you going, Sammy? Don’t you realize that we’ve only just begun? You didn’t think escaping Hell would be that easy, did you?”
Lucifer’s voice filled his head and Sam closed his eyes in an attempt to stave off the panic. There was always that slight edge of fear about him. Always that worry that this might simply be a hallucination-just a really screwed up mindfuck. That eventually it would all be ripped away and he’d still be roasting in Hell.
After all, how many people escaped Hell? His brother had, but he’d had an angel to pull him out. What angel would have pulled Sam out? After what he’d done, he certainly didn’t deserve that rescue.
----
Dean wasn’t the only one who’d escaped. Demons did it all the time, and their father’d managed it somehow. Not that Dean could read minds to explain it to his kid brother. Then again, Dean hadn’t had to worry about Sam going cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs; his little brother hadn’t gone the way of all strong willed, hell be damned, willingly martyred Winchesters, had he?
Had he?
Dean had no idea where he was, and he hadn’t figured out how he had. He knew he wasn’t in the City anymore because nothing was movie. Actually, it all looked a little rundown. It didn’t look like some “benevolent” being were taking care of it, and he was getting a bad feeling things were only going to get worse. He really didn’t like that feeling.
Imagine his surprise when he saw a certain Sasquatch walking around a few yards off. He hadn’t talked to his brother in a while, which was strange, but seemed to be the way of things for the Winchester brothers in the City.
“Sam! Hey, Sam!”
----
Sam heard yelling, but didn’t immediately register who was yelling or that the person was shouting his name. He blinked and tried to focus as he did recognize the voice. Dean’s face came swimming into view and Sam tried to force a smile or at least an expression that had some semblance of being okay.
“Hey, Dean,” he said. “Taking a break from research?”
After all, it seemed like the two brothers had been living and breathing books for the last week or so. Ever since they had decided to formulate a plan to tackle Fred’s library demon.
----
“Yeah, research.” Dean gave the tall Winchester a smirk. It wasn’t a new thing for the two of them to be nose deep in research, but they hadn’t exactly been close lately. Now this?
“You doin’ okay?” There was something different about him; then again, he would guess that the shift from one place to another could make anyone look a little off. He didn’t know how Sam had felt or what he’d done when he’d been taken to the City, so he had no idea how it would be to wind up somewhere else. The last few times they’d been somewhere new, completely new, Sam had actually been curious. So...
“You seen Dinah? Fred? Anyone?”
----
Sam tilted his head, a little confused.
"I just saw Fred for dinner. And I thought you and Dinah weren't... whatever you were before?"
He frowned. He wasn't exactly avoiding the question about whether or not he was okay, but Dean was acting odd, which brought up questions as well.
"Are you okay?"
