Apocalypse Safari (Cap, Dean)
The door to the saloon swung inward and a figure stepped inside, his silhouette blocking out the light for a moment. He slowly walked into the bar, letting the door shut behind him. In the dim light of the dank bar his uniform was difficult to make out, but as he strode under a light the distinctive red, white, and blue stood out. His cowl and helmet were pulled over his head, his assault rifle slung over his shoulder. He walked down the line of the patrons at the bar, looking for the man in question.

He'd made some friends after his work directing the clean-up efforts, and when Steve had asked them about finding a hunter, they'd told him about the Winchesters. Steve had many skills, but tracking mythological monsters was not one of them, and if he ever hoped to get his shield back he was going to need a hand. Steve came to a stop at the man who fit the description as the older of the brothers, and held out a hand. "Dean Winchester? My name is Steve Rogers, I was told you're the man to see about hunting monsters."

Dean wasn't getting drunk. He was just having a drink. Oddly, he wasn't overly down about whatever had happened with Dinah. It felt like a breakup, only he wasn't sure they'd been together. Damn high stakes/life or death situations. He took a sip of whatever was in front of him, and seeing as he'd been drinking the swill for a while, he managed not to wince.

His brows lifted when he heard his name before he looked to see who was asking. He coughed softly, blinking at the reflection he saw. He turned round slowly to look at the offered hand then at the man offering it.

"Fuck me." He knew who Captain American was. It was almost as good as meeting Dr. Sexy. "Hi, yeah, what? Monsters?" He took the offered hand to shake.

Looks like a fighter. Not quite a soldier though, but just as deadly Steve assessed, as he looked the young man up-and-down. Steve gave Dean an even, firm handshake, then leaned against the bar facing him. "I was parachuting into an Al Quaeda stronghold in Northern Pakistan, then suddenly I was here. Before I could figure out what was going on, a pair of Griffons attacked me" he raised his hand "I know how it sounds. I killed one, and the other made off with something that belongs to me." He raised an eyebrow. "A shield. A one of a kind shield, given to me by President Roosevelt. I need to get it back." He looked at the young man intensely. "Can you help me, son?"

"A mythological creature who shouldn't exist, because they're like unicorns and Big Foot, has your shield? The round one or the one that looks like an insurance company logo?" The hunter's handshake was rather steady, even as he asked his questions. Although, Dean nearly kicked himself for sounding too eager, or too in the know. He knew what it was like when people just knew things about him. Then again, wasn't Captain America a public figure? It just wasn't the same, right?

"Uhm, first off, I'm not that much young...I'm younger, but.." He was a little flustered as he tried to work this bit of time travel out. He'd seen many Star Trek episodes and movies, yet they never quite got this bit clear. "Look, don't call me 'son.' Name's 'Dean.' And, yeah, I'll help you. But, it might work better if we have Sam along. Plus, he missed Colossus; got to let the kid meet you. Or are we under that much of a time crunch?"

Dean wasn't sure he could even find his little brother. Even if he was pretty certain it would be a sure thing to bet the Sasquatch was making time with the brain.

Steve smiled at the hunter's comment about his shield, cocking his head. "Ifyou feel it's essential we can track him down, but I'm ready to go if you are, so- Dean". He smirked a little "Nobody seems to like it when I call them that, sorry. And for the record it is the round one." He was pleased, things seemed to be going well. Dean clearly recognized him and was willing to help, and between the two of them Steve was sure they'd be able to find his shield. "You'll want to grab some provisions and equipment I'd expect. " He checked his watch "What say we meet outside the main gates at o-ten-hundred-hours?" he asked crisply, all military efficiency.

Dean tried to process this information.

"You want to do this in the morning? I don't mind. Would give me some time to figure shit out, but the longer we wait, the more likely that bird's flown and your shield with it." He stood up, dusting himself off. He'd have offered the Impala, but she wasn't running how he liked. Plus, he had no idea what a griffon would do to a car. It seemed like a bad idea.

"And, how long do you think we'll be out there?" He was already making a list of what they might need. He was also considering "borrowing" a more all terrain vehicle. Sam could look after the Impala, or Dinah, if either were around to ask.

"Hard to say, I have 3 days emergency rations, although I'm hoping we can do it in one." He shrugged "I'd assumed traveling by night would be more dangerous, but you have more experience here. If you're comfortable going tonight then I am."

Steve rubbed his cheek "It's been a week at least. I only waited this long because I got a good look at the direction it headed when it retreated. I think body where the other landed is a good place to start." He raised an eyebrow "You have access to a vehicle?"

"It can be. Some of the things out there are a real bitch at night. Then again, there just as bad in the daylight, worse - you can see what they look like." Dean gave Cap a slight smile before looking around.

"You do know that that body's probably gone? There are some real scavangers out there, but if you know where it fell, we may find something to start with. I guess if you waited this long, another day won't make much of a difference. I'll see if I can round up Sam. Now matter what, we'll head out at 10 in the a.m."

The question about vehicle received a little smile. "I've got an '67 Impala, but I think I might know something else we can use." That smile turned just a little boyishly impish. He was about to do something bad.

The next morning Steve rose early and made ready for their journey. He was fortunate to have come to this world with a full set of mission equipment, so there was little packing to be done. He slung the loops of his hiking pack over shoulders, cinching them tight. He buckled on his belt, checked his sidearm was in it's holster, then picked up his assault rifle and headed out. It was a bright morning, and the streets were starting to bustle with people. A number of people stopped Steve, thanking him for his leadership during the plague. He smiled and told them he appreciated their thanks, and continued on his way.

He arrived at the gates and checked his watch, and waited for Dean Winchester to appear. He wasn't quite sure what to make of the young man as of yet, but he had a good feeling about him.

Dean might have been a little late, but he didn't come unprepared. He drove out of the gates in a vehicle that looked very ready for the rough terrain. He guessed he'd have to walk part of the time, and had worn the right shoes for it. He even had snacks, water, maybe a bottle of something, and quite a few weapons, some even packed a little mojo.

"Hey, living legend, wanna ride?" The hunter smiled, almost proud of his latest acquisition. He hated that his little brother wasn't along for the ride, but he couldn't let Captain America head out on his own. Dean would have guessed Sam was working on finding an answer to Fred's problem; eventually, the Winchester brothers would have to go hunting. Maybe this little trip would bag them a super soldier.

Tossing his bag in the back, Steve jumped into the seat next to Dean. As they accelerated, he looked up and down approvingly at the vehicle. "Not bad. But no radio? Even in my day those came standard". The car rocked as they hit a few potholes and Steve took hold of a handle to keep from being thrown around the cab. He pulled out a folded map "I saw the griffon head East before I hit the ground, and the locals I've interviewed say the Griffons come from hills in that area."

He looked over at Dean a few moments later. "So seems like you know who I am, what about you? I've heard you and your brother hunt monsters, but that's about it." He was interested in learning more about Dean, he had potential.

"Most comms have been yanked and repurposed." Dean shrugged slightly, not sure why he was defending the thing. Maybe because he sometimes felt bad for cars.

"East." The hunter took a moment to get his bearings before he turned the wheel, sending the vehicle off in the right direction. He glanced sideways at the superhero beside him. Really? This guy was asking to get to know him better? There was something wrong in that somehow.

"That's actually all there is to know. We've been doing it all our lives." He shrugged, not trying to down play anything, but they had always been hunters. Even when their dad was trying to shield them, it was in their blood. For Sam, quite literally.

Steve listened intently to Dean as he spoke, his gaze passing across the rugged landscape as they drove. He wasn't about to force a heart-to-heart with the younger man, but he couldn't help but wonder what the Winchesters might have done if they had a choice in their own future.

"Sometimes your calling chooses you, whether you want it to or not" he replied simply.

They drove in silence for a long while, the terrain gradually turning into rolling hills as they did. As they went, they passed a number of animal skeletons, picked clean by carrion and scavengers. It was nearly another hour before Steve stood up in his seat, motioning to Dean to stop. His keen eyes had caught movement above, and a quick gaze through his binoculars confirmed it. He handed them to Dean, pointing at a cloudbank cresting a large outcropping of hills nearby. "Looks like one to me."
