Welcome to

rare_pairs. Do you enjoy reading and writing fandom pairings which are not commonly found? Do you even find yourself the only one (or just about!) you know who writes for a particular pairing? Do you want to spread the love and maybe snare some fandom lurkers who might be familiar with a series but not involved in the fandom? (C'mon, 'fess up, most of us harbor that dream. :D) Do you like stepping off the beaten track and reading about new possibilities when the popular stuff starts looking formulaic? Do you even feel just a bit lonely, like you're walking down a deserted country road in the middle of nowhere in fandom, toting along your little OTP of choice and hoping to find at least someone else who appreciates and maybe writes it?

Then welcome. C'mon in and make yourselves at home and start posting. What's welcome? Anything -- as long as it is not a common or otherwise easily found pairing in your fandom. Because this is inclusive for any and all fandoms, a master list of disallowed pairings would be a bit difficult to maintain. We'll go by the honor system with a few guidelines on determining a rare pairing.

Your pairing is likely not rare if:
...there's a reasonably active community focused on it that features more than just a couple of regular creators.
...you can find fics for the pairing on archives like Fanfiction.net or Skyehawke without too much difficulty.
...it's not terribly difficult finding fanart.
...doujinshi featuring the characters in question is not hard to find.
...you can find things for the pairing written on a regular or semi-regular basis by more than five different authors.

Naturally, the above list is just a guideline and things aren't necessarily hard and fast. But the more likely those points are to be true, the more likely it is that it's not a rare pairing. What sort of stuff's allowed? Het, slash, femmeslash -- all is welcome. Twosomes, threesomes, foursomes, moresomes -- bring 'em on. Cute and fluffy g-rated goodness to hardcore kinky smut, anything goes. Just follow the rules below and all will be well.

Rules

The rules are subject to change as needed to accommodate community growth and requirements.

Adhere to the InsaneJournal Terms of Service. That includes locking all sexually explicit material.

Do not post requests for fics or recs. Instead, go to rule34 and try out that asylum.

If your fandom is small and unloved and rare, but the pairing itself isn't particularly rare in what does exist for the fandom, you're looking for unknown_fandom instead.

No stories featuring characters presented at a prepubescent age in sexual situations. Fluffy and innocent childhood puppylove crushes are permitted.

Absolutely no fics featuring character bashing. Period. It's crass, unseemly, and entirely unnecessary. If your pairing of choice cannot work without presenting another character as a horrible villain, you may want to rethink your approach.

Be polite and do not flame. Do not feed the trolls. (Feed us instead with yummy recipes and kitty macros and porn.) If there is a conflict with another user, contact the moderator at zanne chaos at insanejournal dot com.
· Not all criticism is a flame. If you give concrit, remember that the 'con' part is from constructive. Find something the author or artist is doing right, and let them know. A little bit of praise on what's good can help a great deal in making the critique on what needs fixing easier to swallow. And remember, if you get concrit, and the giver does have positive things to say about your work, it's not an attack. It means that the reviewer enjoyed it enough to want to help you get better at what you do.

LJ-cut all fanfiction and fanart, except for the headers. Don't know how? The FAQ is your friend. Know it, rely on it, use it in good health.

Be kind about spoilers. If your post has potentially spoilery content, warn for it. Likewise warn for any potential squicks.

Do not modify your font type or color when making a post. Some minor changes of font size are allowed within reason, and font color changes for spoiler zones are allowed. The mods know the difference between natural alteration for normal comment and post usage, and deliberately tweaking fonts to make your post or comment "special" and "unique". The former is okay. The latter is not. Many people have their journals set to display in a way that they find easiest to read, and for a lot of people, eye or monitor problems make this a necessity. If you want your post read (and not eventually deleted), leave the font alone. (Side note: the Rich Text post feature is as buggy as hell. You're better off learning a few simple HTML codes and leaving that alone.)

There will be no deleting of posts or comments, with the exception of accidental double posts or botched code comments. If you want something deleted, ask the mod. If you get comments to a post that you don't appreciate, let the mod know. Do not delete comments that you find displeasing.

Last but not least: respect one another's interests. You may personally find a pairing squicky and horrible, or hate it because it conflicts with an OTP, or disagree with the presentation. Disliking poor writing and execution is one thing, but remember not everyone will share the sames likes and values as you do. Treat others as you yourself would so desire, and simply exercise knowledge of the scrollbar and back button as required.
