American's taxes are reaching historic lows! For heterosexual Americans anyway :)

“One-third of last year’s $862 billion economic stimulus went for tax cuts. Biggest reduction: The Making Work Pay tax credit reduced income taxes $800 for married couples earning up to $150,000.”

Well, fuck you :]

Married couples :) married couples. Married couples.

Of course, Obama doesn't discriminate against people. He certainly didn't make his biggest tax cut one that could only apply to heterosexual people in most states, did he?

and people wonder how one can be homosexual and conservative.

I am so sick of this shit.

Texas gets a cookie; AFA gets nothing. [Apr. 20th, 2009|11:12 pm]

I was wandering around the internets and found an article on ths conservative news website that's associated with the American Family Association with the headline "Texas promotes transgender 're-education' legislation". Seeing that I live in Texas, the very thought of what this might means horrified me, so I went and looked.

Turns out this is actually a good thing - someone in the Texas government has actually suggested a legal measure that could help trans people. I won't link to the article because I don't want to give them any more pageviews, but I'll quote the relevant parts:
Texas is considering a measure to stiffen penalties for harming transgendered people. The addition is to the state's hate crimes law and does more than just provide stiffer penalties, according to attorney Jonathan Saenz of the Free Market Foundation.

"The judge could order that someone who commits one of these crimes has to go to an education program and really re-learn how to think and agree that they accept the other side and the view of the other side in this particular case," he notes.
And in a move that did not surprise me at all, they took this route:
Saenz believes it is reminiscent of re-education camps used in China and the former Soviet Union.

Jonathan Saenz: "Well, it sure sounds like that. And you know, these laws actually apply to juveniles, too, so you can see an intent there to start off really young trying to re-program [and] focus people -- and [it's] really a form of mind-control," he contends.
Riiiight, because teaching people why it's not okay to hurt other people is exactly what they do in totalitarian regimes. But you know how these people usually roll - if you absolutely cannot find any logical reason why something is wrong and should not happen, just point out how it's kinda-sorta-vaguely similar to what the communists did.

I was looking around SoYouWanna.Com and stumbled across their article about gender reassignment (entitled "So you wanna get a sex change?" *eyeroll*) The article in and of itself is decent for about the first page, but the thing that really caught my attention was that they had filed this particular article under the catagory of "Bizarre". Naturally I was a bit peeved about this, so I wrote them a little note. )

Dear straight male friend:

You're a great guy. I like hanging out with you and talking to you (even if you don't know how to hold a conversation) and I think we could have had a nice friendship built around doing things that don't require too much thought if you hadn't moved out of town. And I appreciate you being so apparently cool with my being gay. Wouldn't trust you with my money, but otherwise I like you fine.

However, the thing about me being gay is that it sort of means I'm attracted to women, and not to men. And you're, uh, a man. Quite a masculine, male sort of man. So sexually propositioning me with the disclaimer that "I know you like a lesbian and crap" is a waste of your effort and also offensive. Yes, there are bisexual women who publicly identify at points in their lives as gay, either because they're still ironing out the details or because they're in a relationship with a woman/want to be in a relationship with a woman and don't want guys to think they're available. And there's what I call "Kinsey drift" where a person's position on the Kinsey scale changes slightly over the course of their life. Oh, and there're people who only want relationships with people of one gender, but like sex with both. And I actually recognize myself as a Kinsey 5.something, though I didn't tell you that, so there's a slight possibility that at some point there'll be a guy I'll make an exception for. But -- aside from the fact that I doubt you actually know any of this -- it is really fucking offensive to assume that a woman who self-identifies as gay is not what she herself says she is. You don't know me better than I know myself, dude.

Yours in friendship only,

[info]spacelogic

P. S. It's also pretty cowardly to proposition me only after you've moved out of town. I'll let the "by email" part slide, though the attaching a photo of yourself bit was a nice little extra level of weirdness.

Dear Cop Thugs,

Beating on and arresting Prop 8 protestors for exercising their first amendment rights is not exactly a nice thing to do. If you really felt that they didn't have the right to marry, then you could have at least allowed them the right to protest.

But it seems that "Land of the Free" is only for good, church-going heterosexuals, is that it?

Dear Certain Ignorant Individuals:

"Transgender" or "transsexual" is NOT a sexual fetish. It is NOT the ultimate in BDSM. I honestly can't believe you guys think trans people go out and get SRS for SEXUAL PLEASURE! (Even more so that they DO IT THEMSELVES for sexual pleasure.)

Wondering, "WTFF?"

Dear Unknown Person Who Hung Fliers All Over Campus:

Same-sex marriage=domestic terrorism? WTFF?

And listing all the politicians who have voted against DOMA or pass ed a pro-same-sex-marriage law in their state as "domestic terrorists"? And, if you weren't crazy enough, posting "REMEMBER SODOM AND GOMORRAH" at the bottom of the flier? And insinuating that America will be destroyed if we give in to the demands of "domestic terrorism"? And also, calling those people "Nazis"?

Seriously, you have a screw loose.

The only thing I'm glad of is that someone reported you while I was in class and took down the fliers. What a low way to get people to vote McCain/Palin.

No love,

CBS News: Palin Breaks With McCain On Gay Marriage Ban
COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.) - In an interview with CBN’s David Brody, Sarah Palin signaled her support for a constitutional ban on gay marriage, a position that John McCain once described as “antithetical in every way to the core philosophy of Republicans.”

“I am, in my own, state, I have voted along with the vast majority of Alaskans who had the opportunity to vote to amend our Constitution defining marriage as between one man and one woman. I wish on a federal level that that's where we would go because I don't support gay marriage,” Palin said.

I'm not going to be out there judging individuals, sitting in a seat of judgment telling what they can and can't do, should and should not do, but I certainly can express my own opinion here and take actions that I believe would be best for traditional marriage and that's casting my votes and speaking up for traditional marriage that, that instrument that it's the foundation of our society is that strong family and that's based on that traditional definition of marriage, so I do support that.”

So basically, Sarah, you're not going to judge anyone or tell them what they can and can't do... but you just don't think that some people should be allowed to get married and you are going to try your damnedest to make sure they never can.

Right. Fuck you.

Stupidity + academia = Sheer lunacy!!! [May. 15th, 2008|04:49 am]

[Current Mood | pissed off]

I am livid. I am MORE than livid about this one, my droogies!

The DSM-V, the diagnostic book that assists doctors in diagnosing mental health issues, is up for review. Of particular interest to me is that the diagnoses for GID (or transsexualism) has been assigned a Task Force to review whether or not GID should be reclassified or removed from the DSM altogether.

However, the asshats at the DSM assigned Dr. Kenneth Zucker, who advocates reparative therapy for gender variant children, to head up the Task Force. In addition, the panel includes Dr. Ray Blanchard, infamous in medical circles for producing a protegé in Dr. J. Michael Bailey, who posited such interesting theories as: all transwomen are merely extreme 'homosexuals' or drastic fetishists depending on their orientation, and transmen and bisexual men just don't really exist. Bailey is also known for using questionable and unscientific theories to gain his data.

And the idiots at the DSM thought hiring Zucker and Blanchard for this was a GOOD idea?!? Jeebus Crust, but stupidity really can coexist with academic smarts, it seems.

See links here and here. There's a petition going around here as well. X-posted to [info]transandallies and [info]hazumuchan.

Dear reporter:

I see you're writing an article about transgender children. An actually balanced one, even, which shows how transkids respond to being pressured to conform and how they respond to being supported -- well done there. However, I can't help noticing that throughout the story of a little girl whose family and friends are supporting her and respecting her identity, you not only persist in calling her "him" but also make a point of reminding us that "he" is "his" parents' "son." How is it that you apparently researched transpeople, listened to explanations of why supporting them is good, and wrote a sympathetic article without getting the basic notion of respecting the transperson's identity? She wants to use female pronouns and descriptors, it's easier to use the same words that everyone you're talking to about her is using -- why do you insist on ignoring her wishes?

Dear silly lesbians:

Being bisexual does not make a woman:

-An STD risk. Female-to-female sexual transmission is so unusual that I couldn't even find statistics about how unusual it is. You will not get AIDS if you sleep with a bisexual woman. Honestly. (Anyway, a lot of gay women slept with men in the past. Are you really going to limit yourself to women who've only ever done it with women? Because I pity your odds.)
-Promiscuous. There are bisexual people who are promiscuous and there are bisexual people who are poly, but I'm pretty sure that the percentage of bisexuals who are one or both of these is no higher than the percentage of gay or straight people who are. Yes, bisexual people can hypothetically be attracted to twice as many people as gay/straight ones can -- but attraction != sex, and in any case a wider pool also means the ability to be pickier.
-More likely to dump you than a gay woman. All right, statistically bisexual women might be more likely to end up with men than with women -- I don't have the data to say if this is so -- but I don't hear you shrieking about how you'd never date someone of another race/faith because of the statistical odds of success being lower. (If you are, well, I really have nothing to say to that.) At any rate, the odds of a given relationship working out are much more influenced by the specific individuals' personalities and general compatibility. If you're dumped by a bisexual woman, it'll be because you're insecure and jealous, not because you're female.

Also, bisexuals exist. I will provide the scientific data to back this up if you don't believe me.

It's not that I mind having reduced competition for the attractive bi girls, but come on!

Homosexuals worse than terrorists? [Mar. 11th, 2008|12:34 pm]

http://www.goodasyou.org/good_as_you/2008/03/kern-eschews-ap.html

So I'm sure at least some of you have heard about Oklahoma Representative Sally Kern's remarks about homosexuals being worse than terrorists and "the death knell of this nation."

Really, Mrs. Kern? Worse than terrorists?

I fail to see how my sleeping with another woman (a transgender woman at that! gasp!) is equivalent to--oh wait, no, she said worse than--flying planes into buildings and killing thousands of people. How is my love for another woman worse than strapping a bomb on my chest and blowing up Iraqi civilians along with United States soldiers? I'd really like an explanation of how my private love for my partner hurts anybody else. I'm waiting Mrs. Kern.

Still waiting.

You know, what Sally? When you're okay with someone telling you that your love for your husband (I'm assuming she's married, gotta live that good ol' tighty-righty life) is worse than murder, then I'll tell you that what you've said is not hate speech.

For more, check this out:

[Current Music |John McCutcheon - John Rocker]

Dear Teenagers:

You do not get to dictate what other people find offensive. I don't care if your million gay best friends don't mind you using "fag" and "gay" as insults. I don't care if you're gay and you do it anyway. I don't care if you don't mean it that way. I am still offended, and I'm not the only one.

Here's the thing about you/your friends/your brother not caring: your personal culture is not the general culture. I use this icon because it's the closest I have to an example. In my (internet) culture, "bisexuals don't exist" is something of an injoke -- we all know that they do, so when we talk about it it's obvious from context that we're making fun of the idea. However, if a bisexual person not aware of that meme were to see the jokes about it, there's a good chance that they would take at least some of the subtler ones seriously and become offended because, obviously, they exist and aren't confused/playing it to be cool or whatever the stereotype is this week. The thing is, if I make a "bisexuals don't exist" joke and offend someone, it's my responsibility to explain, apologize, and be more careful next time. That I'm used to it being okay to make those jokes does not give me license to actually hurt other human beings.

As for not meaning it "that way," what you mean by a word is irrelevant. If you call a girl a slut, it implies that you think she is promiscuous (and disapprove of this) whether you meant that or merely meant that you dislike her. Similarly, if you say a guy's a fag, you are implicitly saying that he is attracted to or sexually active with other guys, and that this is a bad thing. If you call something you dislike gay, you are implicitly saying that "gay" means "bad" and whether you intended to say that gay people are thus bad people, you imply it. To put it another way, I can say that "teenaged" means "stupid" or that the n-word only means "the bad ones" but I don't actually control word definitions, so it's still going to mean the other thing to the general population. And yes, implications matter. The psychological effects of having one's descriptor mean "stupid" may be lost on you, but they still exist, and they still fuel cultural prejudice.

On a more basic level, if you offend someone you should not respond to their saying so by telling them why they shouldn't be offended. They're hurt; your duty as a human being is to make the hurt better, not to belittle their feelings.

Seriously, what's so damn' hard about showing basic consideration for others? It's not like I'm asking them to sing a song about how superior all things queer are. I just want to see a little damn' courtesy.

Westboro Baptist Church to picket Heath Ledger's funeral. [Jan. 24th, 2008|06:21 pm]

http://www.godhatesfags.com <--Yes, the website we all know and love from the hateful, bigoted fuckwits at Westboro Baptist Church. I tried to go to the site just now and it was taking too long to load. My guess is that the masses of Heath Ledger fans are going to the site and using up their bandwidth like mad. I know if it were my favorite actress (who also played a queer character) that had died and they were picketing I would be exploding like the rabid fangirl I am. Regardless of whether I was a fan of Ledger or not, this kind of thing just makes me ill.

If I were the kind of person to wish bad things on others--which I'm not, because I have, you know, morals--I would wish Fred Phelps would contract AIDS so that his church could picket his funeral when his immune system weakened enough for him to contract pneumonia and drown in his own fluids.

But I'm not that kind of person. I believe in karma, though, and truly believe that Phelps and his inbred clan of psychos will get what they deserve in the next life, if not this one.

I was debating things with one of my sister's conservative (read: Bible-beating) friends in a Facebook thread last night... yeah I know, it's lame, but to me there is nothing more satisfying than pwning someone in a debate (even when that someone is not smart enough to realize they've been pwned.) He was trying to tell me that the divorce rate in America is caused by "moral decay"... which led him to bring up homosexuality. The actual discussion is a lot long than this, I'm just posting the relevant bits. Emphasis added by me. Read more... )
