Important Update:
Firstly, thank you to everybody who left us comments and voted in our poll. We appreciate all the advice and input from everybody here.

After some thought and discussion, we've decided to change the nature of this convention. As you may have noticed, [info]pendulumchanges and I changed the name of the asylum, to something we think is a little more fitting. So, without further ado:

What does this mean?

Basically, we're changing the format of what was originally going to be a convention. Instead, we're planning this more like a massive gathering of fangirls. Because let's face it... you throw a bunch of us in a room and we're never going to shut up long enough for a leader based-discussion.

Will there still be events?

Of course there will be! We're going to be in Toronto, people! For many of us, it'll be our first trip into the city. But instead of giving times and room numbers and sign up sheets, we're going to play it a little more casual. There will be some scheduled events: walking tours, bar trips, and the like (I still want to have a vid show!); but over all, we're going to see what happens, and when.

This sounds great, but what is this going to cost me?

Here's the best part. Because we're not going to be renting rooms and booking out restaurants, the amount you spend will be up to you. As of right now, there is no official charge for SqueeFest 2008. This might change, but essentially, we're trying to keep it as low cost as possible, so as many of you can make it as possible.

What about hotel/transportation?

Everybody will be expected to arrange their own transportation, as well as hotel accommodations. This DOESN'T mean that we're going to leave you hanging. We'll provide information on hotels, and help people find roommates and even travel mates, if you need somebody to carpool with you.

So, this is what we've got so far. Questions, comments, complaints? We'd love input from every body, and please don't forget to join/watch the asylum, so you don't miss anything new!

I would suggest checking with hotels about a block of rooms. If we can guarantee a certain number of rooms, the hotel might give us a reduced rate.
After you know what dates of course!

Interestingly enough, sometimes this works against you.
I run a greyhound fundraiser, the rooms at the hotel are not discounted greatly - in some cases the rate is raised over the deep discount normally offered online.

Yeah, [info]netlagd is right. We did look into attempting to get a group rate, but that would mean blocking out at least 10 rooms. Considering that so many of us are on a tight budget, we would need about 40 people to make that worth while. As this is the first year that we're doing this, we don't expect such a large number, and people who need to share a room, would be able to find roommates.

If somehow, we did end up with a ton of people, we can always look into this idea again.

Thank you for your suggestion!

i think this is a great idea.

although it would still be nice i think to see if you can get a block of rooms somewhere. just so we are all in the same location...especially at a hotel with a bar, then we have a common space we can just take over and squee at for free. plus it might get a reduced rate :D

Yay for squeefest! I'm waiting anxiously for dates but if all goes well and Student loans doesn't kill me I should be there.

As long as it's not during pride week I can't see any problem getting some rooms in a hotel near Church Street.

If it's one of the hotels associated with Pacrim Hospitality (Crowne, Holiday Inn, Ramada etc) I should be able to get a discount for those that want to stay in that hotel.
