Anticlimax

“Justin, honey, I’m proud of you,” Jennifer gushed as she wrapped more leftovers. “The dinner was perfect, the house looks amazing, you somehow got Brian to remain sober…”

“I owe him lots of— never mind.”

Ignoring the obvious, Jenn delved into her real concerns. “So how come you’re acting like your goldfish died?”

“Is it always like this?” he questioned sadly. “The letdown?”

“I don’t understand.”

“I planned for weeks, cooked for days, made unholy pacts with Brian, and in three hours it’s over?”

“Pretty much,” she answered honestly.

“And now I have to divvy out leftovers? This really sucks!”
