Debbie called Jennifer at least once a week with updates, full of stories about what Justin was doing in school, how the customers at the diner loved him, and the status his ever evolving relationship with Brian.

Jennifer soaked up every detail eagerly, both profoundly grateful to Debbie for helping her stay part of Justin’s life and deeply resentful that Debbie was the one to share all this with him. While Jennifer struggled to accept Justin’s sexuality and new life, Debbie stepped in and loved him just as he was. Jennifer wondered if he’d ever really be her son again.
