Condom: Emmett and Drew

Drew had been taught that it was heroic to play through pain. Running on a sprained ankle or throwing with a broken wrist, no matter how many drugs, both legal and illegal, you used to dull the pain, made you brave. The more you acted like you didn’t feel the pain, the more you were applauded.

Drew realized long ago that Emmett was his hero. But it wasn’t until Emmett started telling him stories about growing up in Hazelhurst that Drew realized how much of his life he’d spent playing through his pain even if all his wounds weren’t physical.
