Challenge #121: Sunshine
Title: Vacation - Fucking Cowboys
Author's Notes: Part 5 of 5. The lovely [info]notreallyme10 generously beta'd this for me.
And the condom goes to: Justin Taylor

"Fucking miniature umbrellas, fucking conga dancing, fucking cowboys" Justin mutters, shouldering the loft door open, a shudder passing over his body at the memory of the only country song the band knew being played every time a cowboy requested a song! And being a gay-friendly cruise, there were a lot of fucking cowboys!

"I'm just glad to be somewhere the liquor isn't mixed with cane sugar."

"I'm actually glad to see snow! I have had enough fucking sunshine for a while!"

"Au contraire, Mon chéri, one can never get enough fucking sunshine." Smiling, Justin is led to the bedroom.

Thanks! I have a few more along those lines if you want to take a peek and grab (just remember to credit whoever was the maker).

Adorable!

I see you've been busy drabbling while IJ was down -- great use of the time! Looking forward to the rest of them.

I hope you don't mind, I thought you might want to know about two little typos: it should be "shudder", and "mon cher" (no 'e' on the end for a man).

Duh. I just noticed that this is the last of a series. Leave it to me to read the last one first and not realize it. Off to start at the beginning!

It's my own fault, I probably should have numbered them or something.

Okay, so I just read the whole story in the proper order, and really enjoyed it. Each of the drabbles made me smile, and most gave me a nice laugh too.

Thanks for posting them!

I'm so glad you like them, Sweetie!

Thank you, I NEVER mind corrections! I will run off to fix shudder(DUH).

You know, I debated over the mon cher/chere thing. Everywhere I looked translated mon cher as my good fellow and mon chere as my dear or beloved(even though it was feminine), so I decided to stick with chere.

Well, feel free to ask Sam or another native speaker because I could certainly be ignorant of an idiomatic usage, especially if it's fairly new, but I studied French for 10 years in my youth and was pretty fluent by the end of that time.

From everything I learned, it would always be either mon cher (for a male, no accent) or ma chère (for a female, which always has an accent) but never a cross between the two.

Secondly, as you gathered, mon cher by itself isn't particularly romantic, it's more a term of endearment you would use with a friend or a child (but I wouldn't necessarily expect Brian to realize that, so I didn't bother saying anything). However, as I said, I'm pretty certain that to make it romantic you wouldn't feminize the noun and use it with a male pronoun. I'm pretty sure that's just wrong.
Rather, you'd use one of several other options:
-- make it into an adjective by saying something like mon cher amour ("my dear love")
-- say mon chéri (or for a woman ma chérie) which basically means "my darling"
-- or more simply, as Brian did in the show, leave it out and say mon amour ("my love").

Flame, you are a wonder! I looked and looked for exactly this! How to romanticize mon cher, yet keep it masculine! I knew it had to be there, but couldn't find it. This is perfect.

Next time I can't find something that I know must be out there, I'm just emailing you instead, seriously! Thank you! *Off to correct!*

Don't forget though, chéri has to have an accent over the e.

If you're using rich text you can just copy and paste it.
If you're using html, just type chéri and it will come out as chéri.

**I have to tell you, the country song part is actually true. It happened to me and my husband the one time we took a cruise. If we never hear "Friends in Low Places" by Garth Brooks again it will be too soon! :D **
