CHASING DAPHNE

My Daphne discussion bunny got hopped up on crack with this post http://asylums.insanejournal.com/qaf_coffeeclub/179098.html.

Delectable Daphne. An endless source of mystery and fascination! So many things we never saw in the series. So many things we are left to imagine/deduce/discuss on our own.

Were Daphne’s parents wealthier than Justin’s parents? Why did Daphne have her own car and Justin didn’t? What college did Daphne attend? How did she pay for her apartment, since she apparently had no job? What did Daphne’s parents think of her friendship with Justin? What did they think of Justin? Of his parents? Where were her parents all the times Daphne went to Liberty Avenue? What was life like in the Chanders household?

Daphne once said that both her parents were black and she was black, but she was very light-skinned. Makes one wonder about the delicious rich heritage there. I got an immediate impression of one parent originating from a different country.

I got the impression from the series that Daphne was deeply loved by her parents and that she loved and respected them (while complaining about their over-protectiveness).

I'm at lunch, in between a really busy day, so I'll have to come back to this later, but there was one part I wanted to address.

Daphne once said that both her parents were black and she was black, but she was very light-skinned. Makes one wonder about the delicious rich heritage there. I got an immediate impression of one parent originating from a different country.

The most important part to remember here is that the actress was bi-racial. This is a trend that has been prevalent in tv and movies for quite some time. The less "black" an actress looks, the better and easier it is to incorporate her character into a relationship, friend or lover, with a white actor. I do believe that at times it is a deliberate casting. And while Mykala (sp?) Smith is biracial, she does have distinctive African features. Off the top of my head, the one biracial actress that can most easily pass for white is Jennifer Beals (Bette, The L Word).

So, when Daph declares that everyone in her family is black, she's stating a truth by way of the race that her character was written as. Also, her statement was a comparison to the fact that while Justin's family was white, Justin was gay, making him stand apart from what people saw. Her family...they were just black, and straight (as far as we know). Nothing other than that to make them stand out.

I'm fascinated by what field she went into after college.

I have read many fics where she becomes a doctor. Was this discussed in the show? If it was it couldn't have been a very in depth conversation, cause honestly I don't remember it at all. Or maybe I just wasn't paying enough attention.

I have also read a few where she becomes a psychiatrist or a therapist, which I can totally see, with her sympathetic nature and thoughtful listening, but again, is it canon?

Off the top of my head (which is hit or miss) the only thing I remember that may have fueled doctor!Daph in fics was when Justin was with Ethan and he announced he was dropping out of school. He asked her what classes she was taking and she answered something like anatomy and biochemistry, which I assume one takes for pre-med?? I really don't know, but due to that and her stellar SAT scores, many writers make her a doctor.

	You are right, and I do remember them talking about those classes. I don't know though, I think my husband had to take them for his biology degree. I won't wake him up now(it's 2am), I'll wait til the morning. :) (Reply to this) (Parent)
