this ever happen to you?
I'm in a bit of a quandary. I've recently finished reading a fic that was well written, plot well constructed, characters in cannon, but I really didn't like it.

Anyone else find this happen to them when they read a fic?

Just a note - Brian and Justin were together at the end.

It's because it's not well written. I just read the first section and I haven't clue what's going on, which is thoroughly annoying. Some writers confuse suspense for confusion. Suspense is created when we KNOW what's happening and have a strong preference for the way things turn out.

And it doesn't *feel* IC either. Like I said, I don't really understand what is happening. From what I gather though, it's Justin walking out of Daphne's apartment. There's no time in the show's history when Justin walking out on Daphne ever happens, or would ever be of any primary focus if it did.

you do have to put the pieces together, but if it will help

season 3 post-ethan, Justin and Daphne are living together
Daphne is pregnant as a result of a night of drinking and getting high, Brian is the father. The fic is Justin's reaction an emoting/emotion about it all.

It's disturbing.

I've actually read that. I agree it's disturbing. It don't agree that it's IC, though. I think there's enough in the plot to make the plot and characters very OOC. I also think that it's bad writing when the reader has to piece things together that the characters already know. It's annoying and serves no purpose. I also didn't like how she had a replacement Justin. Weird.

Yes, the same thing happens to me, while reading a fic.

Sometimes I read some of the comments before reading, to get other opinions first. If the most of them positiv like 'great, fantastic, i love it....', I give it a try. Often I read just the first few sentences and think: 'Are they nuts, that's crab, I dont understand a word!'

But it happens the other way around too. Fics other people don't like at all I like very much.
Everybody has just a diffrent taste I would say.

I can't give a opinion to your fic now, because I haven't read it yet, maybe tomorrow if I have time.

if you read through the entire fic, the characters do act in character.
I agree there is a suspension of disbelief when it comes to brian and daphne having sex, but I could see mutual commiseration.

And it is interesting how Justin views all of what is happening around him - much of the story is from his perspective if not POV. But there are a couple of glimpses toward the end where it all falls together.
You're right, I don't care for plot.

However, I've been reading quite a bit of season 2/3 fic (written during the time the episodes aired) and am finding some interesting stuff that I wouldn't read.

And as for running away, I would say that I'd say the same about Justin and Brian having a threesome with Emmett, but then Triciaqaf wrote Gone, and I was blown away. So I'm learning to try things out.

I actually ended up reading Stumble and Fall after reading what I think is a less well crafted version of the same plot by Hollyilex:

well...I started to read it and was confused as hell after a few paragraphs. I assumed a lot of things that were eventually confirmed, but I really disliked the plot and don't like any of the characters at all! I vaguely recognize them, but they're kind of like the pod people from a body snatcher movie to me.

It may be someone's cup of tea, but it wasn't mine!

Actually - I think you hit the nail on the head.

I didn't feel the underlying love between the two characters - although there is one thing near the end which is swoon, to die for, TEH LOVE.

Oh, I know this fic and I felt absolutely the same as you did.
The other fic for me is Simon“s "The Other Foot Series." Great writer and a so wasting of talent. eva213

That happens to me ALL the time. There are fics out there that are considered fandom icons that I don't enjoy at all for one reason or another. I think that it used to bother me, but it doesn't at all now. Of course, I haven't read a new QaF fic in ages, either.

hey look, I have your icon

btw, it has been a long time since I read something new.

Regarding new fic, I was originally turned off by the subject matter and the fact that Craig was involved, but I found this little fic in my travels and absolutely thought it was wonderful:

Risk by pfltea46 (scroll down to the bottom for the first chapter)

it's new, it's different

Yes, but once you mentioned it, I had to read it. It wasn't poorly written, just the plot made me very unhappy. Daphne and Brian in any circumstance is just wrong. IMHO.

I've barely made it through the first part, but it's written in sort of a stream-of-consciousness style that is starting to get on my nerves.
Also the author keeps bouncing in and out of Justin's mind without a distinction between the two.
Example: This is how I always leave, Justin wants to tell her, because she knows him that well, knows that there's never been a problem in his life that he couldn't run out on. This is what I always do, and you can ask me anything else and it'll be okay, I can do it, but not this.
I also agree with Fun. There is too little information given for it to be "suspenseful" and it rather comes out just confusing.

As I read more, I come across more issues I have with it, but instead of sitting here ripping it apart bit by bit, I'm just going to conclude with the fact that I do not agree that it was well-written. Well, that's harsh. I'll just say that I do not enjoy this particular author's writing style, I think.
To each his own, though.
I DO agree that sometimes you just come across some fics that are really well written, with a developed plot and fairly-IC that you can still manage to just *dislike* for some reason.

Well, as for being confused by this fic, "Stumble and Fall" is the third part of a four-part Season Three AU series written by jenn/seperis, and josselin.

It's been ages since I read this series, so I can't comment on how much I liked it or how well I thought it was written as I don't remember, but I would think you guys would find it less confusing if you had read the first two parts of the fic first, before reading "Stumble and Fall".

1 - Echo (or here)
2 - Steps
3 - Stumble and Fall
4 - Don't Blink (Or You'll Miss It) (or here)

Yes, that makes sense. I didn't realize I was coming into it from the the middle. I actually have read this series and others by the authors and they are really fine writers. I don't like this one because it's so disturbing. As for it being IC, I still have to disagree. I have read other AUs that make me feel like I am in the land of QAF and this one definitely feels like the Twilight Zone.

I know what you mean about that distinction. It's definitely one I"ve run into. As far as this series goes though, it's been probably four years since I read it, and I don't remember anything about it so I can't comment until I read it again at some point.

It did help with the confusion, but I'm still really uncomfortable with the plot which is strange for me cause I read just about everything. I'm actually a little squicked-lol!
