How old was Debbie at the beginning of the series?
Michael was 29 turning 30 at the beginning of the series.

We find out Michael's dad was Debbie's classmate.

So if Debbie was 18 or 19 when she had Michael, that would make her 49/50 at the beginning of the series.

Does that seem right?

So what would you say is Vic's age?

For some reason I didn't see Debbie on the cusp of 50, I kind of got the feeling that she was mid-fifties and that Vic was in his early 50s.

Was Vic older or younger than Debbie?

Vic was younger... "Fuck you little brother. Fuck. You." *meep*

At some point doesn't Debbie tell a story to Mel when she's pregnant (or to someone?) about how there once was a girl who popped our her kid and went right back to work... does she mention how old she was when she had Michael in that little speech?

Michael argues that it was different for Deb because she was only seventeen when she had him - which was either in March (2.13) or November (1.11) 1970 -, as opposed to Mel in her thirties and with endometriosis; so she would have been 47 when the series started, making her year of birth 1953. Vic's year of birth varies between 1952 on his Babylon membership card and 1951 on his headstone, but he was always made out to be the younger one when it came up. Who knows?

You're absolutely correct, and beat me to it. Thank you for saving me the typing! Yet another QaF inconsistency.

Funny too, because I was just thinking of posting about this exact issue at [info]making_qaf but I got waylayed by something else.

Don't know about Debbie's age, but it said "1951 - 2004" on Vic's headstone, which would make him 49 in S1. And Debbie, well, older than that. lol

Wasn't Michael conceived the summer after Deb and Danny graduated from high school? Because then Danny left town, right? So, that would be the summer of 1970. Maybe she and Vic were "Irish twins," lol (born 9-11 months apart in 1951).

In 2.13 Michael said they graduated in 1969 and he was born in 1970.

Chalk it up to C/L's truly fucked up timeline once again. Michael is older than Brian. Brian's deathday cake said 1971-2001. Michael says that he was born in 1970. It's possible that he repeated a year in school, or started really late. I'm going with started late, for this reason.

Back in the olden days, you had to be 5 years old before school started in September. I wanna say it was around the 15th, like that was the cutoff. So, if Michael was born in November, then he would have to wait til the next school year. They changed that rule around the time my kids started school. Then, if they turned 5 in that calendar year, as long as they knew their name, first and last, ABC's and could count to 10, they were accepted to kindergarten.

Interesting. Can you tell me the approximate year they changed it? Which would have applied to Justin and Daphne, and to Molly?

No idea. But my oldest started school in 1985, so it would have been more applicable to Molly, as opposed to Justin and Daphne. But a parent has always had the option of petitioning the school to allow a child not quite 5 to enter kindergarten. A contributing factor would be the child's social abilities as well, so if they'd been in a Headstart tyoe program, they would likely be allowed to start a little early.

I started school in 67, Brian and Justin around 75-76. The schools were a bit stricter then, but that also would be up to the particular state.

I was going to say Brian might have skipped a grade, but then realized I was forgetting Season 1, where both Mikey and Brian turn 30 before Justin graduates H.S. Stoopid CowLip Nonstandard Time.

VL, that's an interesting thing your school district does, testing the younger kids. Makes sense; just never heard of any other district doing it. Here, in Northern VA, the cutoff is Sept. 30, no ifs, and or buts. When I was in school in Chicago, back in the last millenium, it was December 1.

This was when I lived in Oregon. And it wasn't so much that they tested the kids, more that if a parent wanted to enroll the kid and the kid wasn't yet 5, or hadn't been to pre-kindergarten/Headstart, then they would question them to judge their development. In fact, there was a little girl that had severe Down's Syndrome, and they allowed her to be with the kids she'd gone to Headstart with. She moved up with them to 5th grade, when she became too sick to continue. I have never seen a group of kids so understanding and protective of another kid, especially one with severe disabilities.

Now THAT'S the way to do inclusion. I'm sorry to hear that she got so ill, but kids with severe Down's Syndrome often are in fragile health.

Emma (the little girl) was in and out or the hospital a lot. Sadly, she died when she was 11. My oldest was upset about it. But at least Emma got to be with kids her own age for those few years of school.

Oh, that is bittersweet. But I agree with you. My ex had a first cousin who died at 3 of Down's and (back in the 50s) spent all his short life in an institution. Very sad.
