Brat pack
So I've been watching early season one again with a friend of mine, and she pointed out what a brat Justin was.

I have to agree. In episodes 5-8 especially.

Poor Jennifer, after she brings Justin his uniform and asks if she if Justin needs anything from her -- his bitchy response? "For you to go."

But quite frankly in all the episodes we've watched lately, there was a lot of bratty and bitchy-ness going on.

Brian and David

Melanie and Brian

Michael and Justin

and somehow the show got over the hurdle and moved on to where the characters evolved into people we liked (despite their flaws) and eventually could love.

opinions?

I only saw Justin really be a brat to his mom, which is pretty typical behavior. I loved how Randy delivered the line, "For you to go." Cuz yes, you sort of want to slap him, but I could empathize. Even as a brat, I loved Justin. It was his 'not yet a man, no longer a boy' phase.

Justin, the brat, drove me up the wall. I loved the little shit. But Dayem, manners boy.

One of the things I enjoyed about Qaf was the flaws, kept the characters intersting.

I thought they were all rather bratty and bitchy but enjoyed the quick and wittiness of it all. And at least Justin as a really good excuse..........
he's only 17 for f***** sake!

I think you're very right...they were all pretty bratty/bitchy at the beginning. At least we can (sort of) explain Justin's away as him being only 17. He was pretty typical in just being a teenager - just remember how overly dramatic everything was to him, like when he relayed his coming out story to Deb? "I'm gonna vomit." Haha.
To me, it also looks more "bratty" because Justin goes through a lot during S1, and starts hanging out with older people in general, which I think leads to him growing up and maturing a lot in a short time. So rewatching S1, knowing who he becomes by S5, I can't help but compare and notice a big difference. He's still adorably endearing, though :)
And I also think if he hadn't been so bratty and stubborn, he might not have pushed Brian hard enough to actually stick around.

But like you, I'm glad they developed the characters and their relationships into so much more than a one-dimensional ideas we got at the beginning (brat, jerk, like, dislike, etc)

When my 19 yr old niece started watching QaF with me(yes, I corrupt the very young, like Brian) she hated Jen because of how overbearing and controlling she was being. I love Jen, and knowing that she is a much beloved character by many, was quite shocked by this. My niece didn't seem to think that Justin was being bratty at all. I chalk that up to her age and perspective. It was well into S4 before she got over her resentment of Jen's treatment of Justin when he was coming out. Now, I don't know anyone here's age, but I'm assuming that most of us are older than Justin(I am much closer to Jen's age). So could our perception of Justin as bratty be colored by our age?

Yeah, I think you're right. I'm 23 now so more or less I was Justin age when the show was on. I thought Justin was being a brat, well, maybe that's too much too say;I remember thinking he was overreacting a bit with his mom but then again, most of my friends agreed with Justin totally.
