Christmas Presents
I've been wondering about the gang and Christmas.

I wonder if they exchanged presents through the years. I can't decide.

What do you guys think?

And just for fun, what do you think they'd get each other post 513?

Hee, I just completely spammed the fandom...Brian and Justin have been on my mind all day.

I am interested to read this discussion. I hope others comment. I can see Mel & Linds, Debbie, Emmett, and Ted giving gifts to all (or some). Justin and Daphne possibly having a tradition of exchanging gifts between the two of them. S5 Michael & Ben giving to the gang. Mid to late S5 Justin getting in on it. Maybe post-513 would have Justin adding Brian's name on the card next to his own--perhaps, not before Brian began adding Justin's name to the gifts he gave to Gus and JR. :)

I've always wondered what Brian brought Gus for his first birthday...maybe that should be another discussion. lol

Maybe he opened a college fund or a living trust. Perhaps, he made Michael or Justin go shopping with him, so they could pick something out that he could take credit for!

Possibly, he wasn't planning on getting him anything. But then, unexpectedly, Gus's first birthday coincided with a Mel & Linds dilemma...Brian saved the day for them and got Gus the greatest first present ever, all in one magical solution. He's a little bit like Samantha Stevens in that way...That, and the whole advertising genius thing. XD

I agree, this may need its own discussion. LOL! :D

It's an interesting topic because of the trauma Brian and Justin are going through in 202.

It likely would have caused him to think more soberly on the subject of Gus' birthday than he might have otherwise. It might also have caused Brian to be sentimental. What are your thoughts?

Tough one, but I lean towards yes.

I think Emmett and Deb would be all over that and sort of pull everyone else into the tradition. Michael, Ben, Mel, Linds, Ted would all take part.

In the early years Justin would give sketches and then slowly grow into buying more traditional gifts or giving bigger pieces of art.

And I can see Brian going either way at first. Possibly holding out in the first few years because he doesn't believe in it, though he is quite generous and has certainly been know to contradict himself enough that I can also see him giving gifts right from the start. Either way over the years I see him taking part in gift giving for sure.

I like your idea on this. I can see Justin do exactly as you described. It fits.

I believe everyone exchanged gifts traditionally, including Brian, however Brian's would have been like 'office' gifts before Justin. Expensive, but the same thing for everyone - like an Armani tie, or a wallet, or something like that for all the gang.
When Justin came along he would have shamed Brian into putting more individual thought into the gifts.

I don't know! I can't imagine some folks not going all-out: Debbie, Michael (and Ben eventually), Jenn, Daphne, Lindsay (another question is how do Mel and Linds celebrate at all? Christmas, Hanukkah, both?), Emmett, even Ted. Justin I think would have given gifts to his family, but I'm not sure about him even giving Brian something...

And Brian himself? I don't have a clue. He can be very generous and material things matter to him, especially early on. I kind of think that giving gifts might have been important to him, but I imagine them being a little impersonal and probably a little too extravagant.

It's really hard to guess. There's not a real Christmas celebration at all in canon and Deb's party for Vic was heartbreakingly horrible. But there is a good bit of gift-giving, so that leads me to think they'd do it at Christmas.

I think Christmas held a lot of bad memories for Brian, and when you add in the whole religion and advertising angles, I would guess that Brian had historically gone missing on Christmas-- at least until Gus and Justin came along.

Actually, I wrote a holiday gift exchange fic on this topic for the original holiday gift exchange. The fic had the gang pulling names:
