Arrival
Who: Everyone
What: Dorms have opened, people are arriving
Where: Kamizaka Train Station
When: March 10th (Sunny)

The station had been plastered with all kinds of signage meant to direct the first batch of arriving Oozora students - and from the clutter on the small but shining platform, there looked to be a lot of them. Many consulted with their phones or reread the more informative parts of their acceptance packages - The letter of congratulations assuring them they "are among the few, the talented, the lucky" and signed in swirly handwriting by the school's founders was pleasant, after all, but not as useful as the plain-text document announcing that dorms would open today and assignments could be picked up upon arrival.

"This way, please," announced a wisp of a man for about the fourth time. His creaky voice was not suited well to the job, especially not with the station so crowded - likely why he spoke with one arm pointed straight and steady at a large sign reading "Oozora Academy Shuttle Bus ->".

There was a robot standing behind the fellow with the sign. At least, that was the best and easiest guess, given the lack of breathing, the remarkable stillness, and the bright blue hair. Definitely the bright blue synthetic hair. She appeared to be there to provide some kind of assistance, and was defaulting to stand-by mode until called upon to help.

This time Asami was peeping at the robot before she got there. It had hair that seemed to shine in the heat, blue and clean, and definitely fake. Every robot seemed to Asami like an exotic object. Its beauty stood out in the midst of the sea of white and black - the currents of which seemed to run side by side as the people headed in different directions - and seemed to push her out.

She jogged, until at last, with a triumphant moan, she planted her enormous bag on the ground and seemed to lever herself up. Only a particularly well-trained set of manners stopped her from talking. She stood in front of the robot and studied it with a strongly curious look. Well, what would she even talk to a robot? Did she even have to bow?

"... Hi."

A subtle change came over the robot, then — accompanied with a sound very much like a computer waking up from sleep mode, a brief quiet mechanical grinding, and then the robot smiled. Her eyes brightened, and her almost-real-looking pupils widened and contracted, before focusing on Asami.

"Greetings, new Oozora Academy student." Her voice was even, human-sounding; she had top of the line vocal emulators, obviously. "I am Estella. I am here to assist in your moving in process. How may I be of service?"

Asami was unable to avoid looking confused at this. She stared at the robot in some perplexity till she saw those eyes come to life, almost with a will. She felt the robot was a helper as well as a talker and followed the customs she had been taught - she bowed, bending forward like a flame caught in a draft.

"Perhaps," she suggested, "you could help me with my luggage?"

"It would be my pleasure," Estella bowed in response, and then bent down to lift Asami's bag. Despite the bag being a huge load, the robot lifted it with apparent ease. Which was sensible, given her apparent assignment as a luggage-carrying assistant. "Please, follow me to the shuttle."

She started off in the direction the man's sign pointed, walking and looking straight ahead with the bag in one hand. "Your bags will be loaded below the shuttle bus. It is advisable to tag them for ease of retrieval when we reach our destination."

At the shuttle bus...
[info]red_lion

"Why the hell can't I just take it on with me?" Akane demanded. Her face was turning as red as her hair and it had nothing to do with the cold wind blowing through the bus terminal. She had prepared herself for that, bundled up in her favourite soft leather bomber jacket, even brought along a pair of gloves in case the usual stand-by of keeping her hands shoved deep in her pockets failed for some reason. Good thing, too - she'd been holding up her bass case for something like ten minutes while she argued with the baggage attendant about it.

The older man blinked slowly and repeated in a weary voice the exact regulation about oversized parcels and the potential danger they could pose to other traveler's safety. Having heard it twice before, Akane used the time instead to glare at the people deliberately skirting her and trying to avoid making eye contact as they passed.

"It's not like I want to stuff it in the overhead bin, I'll stand and put it on the seat. The train people didn't have a goddamn problem with it!"

As it happened, one young man did NOT try to sneak by and let this be someone else's problem. The long haired youth approached with a hand lifted in a placating manner, the other busy holding a sailor duffel bag over his shoulder.

"Pardon me," he said, "now, couldn't help but overhear you're having some trouble there. See, I'm not carrying a lot with me. I could take this on my seat, or carry it myself. I don't mind."

She spent a few seconds just standing at the newcomer, frowning. Who the hell was this and what the hell did he want?

"Baggage of that size is not allowed on the shuttle bus," the attendant repeated serenely to the newcomer. Akane looked back and forth between the two of them, and after a moment's deliberation, stepped towards Itsuki.

"What's your name?"

The boy looked somewhat disappointed that he couldn't do much to help. He was scratching the back of his neck, trying to think of some other idea when Akane addressed him. His lips spread on a bright, somewhat sheepish smile. "Ah, Kudou Itsuki. Pleased to meet your acquaintance. Sorry I couldn't help that much."

There were a lot of kids here. Lots of hustle and bustle, lots of raised voiced and tempers – no doubt it had something to do with the heat, or the fact that so many tags on the luggage had been switched. It was hard to tell, but one boy, tall and tan, looked relaxed, even somewhat pleased. He’d managed to find a ledge to clamber onto – he looked the type to find a high place anywhere – and was watching the proceedings with sleepy, half-hooded eyes, a rucksack dangling from one hand and his other arm disappeared in the chest of his yukata, with only the tips of his long fingers visible.

There was a wind blowing through the terminal, open to the elements as it was, snapping clothes and the colorful welcome banners. It took the edge off the temperature, but it didn’t last long, and only came on occasion. Still, he was in the shade, his mischief done, and he was beginning to want for a nap – you learned to sleep through noise like this in a house full of several younger siblings.

It did seem a missed opportunity, though, and he’d rather not risk missing the bus. He shrugged off one half of his robe, and fished something free of his belongings: a long, strap of a keychain, weighed down by a plethora of items. He found his laser pointer, and started pestering people with it, fastidiously avoiding the temptation of their eyes.

The robot was moving back into the terminal to assist more students when the laser pointed crossed her field of vision. She stopped, and her eyes fixed on it as it darted across the cement floor and up onto someone's leg. The student didn't notice. Estella, however, tracked its motion for a moment, eyes darting but head never moving.

This was not something her creators had foreseen her encountering, apparently; she lacked a designated reaction for this in her programming.

The light reached Asami. It left the pavement, jumped on her shoe and continued to climb her. She jumped back with an annoyed sniff, wondering where it had come from. She looked round and found the light had vanished. Asami pushed her hair out of her eyes, and felt harassed.

She remarked to the unknown person responsible, in a stern accent and with a look that said their answer better be good, "Would you please stop that?"

"Let's see here," Ayako carefully shifted the travel backpack on her back for the second time as she sucked on the peice of liqorish she had in her mouth. In her hand was her cellphone and she scrolled through the texts from her former team-mates. They all seemed to be cheering her on, and she she shook her head as she texted happy replies back. "No sense in worrying or disappointing them too much."

She closed her phone and hefted the long duffle bag on her shoulder then grabbed the small suitcases she had with her. Ayako paused when she felt a pair of eyes on her and looked up to see a strange girl with blue hair. She adjusted the scarf she wore around her neck and then heard another voice from a dark haired girl shout out to the crowd about stopping something.

It was then she noticd the laser light and saw it traveling on the girl's leg. Ayako laughed some and pulled out her phone to take a picture of the random event, "Well this is going up on my page when I get my lap top set up. Already, not even day one, and someone's pulling out the laser pens. What next, spitballs?"

With a quick click of the phone she captured the blue haired girl and the Black haired girl, and grinned. Shoving it back into her pocket. She watched the laser for a bit, shrugged and glanced up to see if she could spot the person using it.

Kaito had forgotten what it felt like to be somewhere near the bottom of a crowd. It wasn't that he'd forgotten he was not even yet halfway between five and six feet in his first year of high school- he was well aware of his small stature- it was just that it had been a while since his middle school graduation, the last time he'd been in a comparable crowd.

Being probably the shortest boy in the freshman class didn't bother him, either. It was an inconvenience, for sure, especially on the baseball field, but not an insurmountable one. Didn't make him weak, either- he didn't particularly feel burdened by his bags of belongings for the dorms (though that was more likely because he didn't feel the need to bring quite as many belongings).

What did bother Kaito was that there, stuffed in between a number of much taller students, he couldn't see the goddamn bus. He was, to put it lightly, trapped.

"Uh, excuse me? Excuse me everyone, could you make way? I'm stuck here and I've got a lot of- oof"

Nobody listened, and he continued to be jostled.

Somebody did hear, and came jostling through the crowd to Kaito.

"Kaito-kun!" Ruri called as she made her way through the crowd, focusing on her friend so she didn't get lost herself. Her own luggage was expertly packed in and on a rollaway being pushed in front of her, helping her neatly part the crowd.

"There you are! Come on, let's get on the bus."

The sooner they were on the bus with luggage carefully stowed, the sooner they could be out of the unpredictable and chaotic crowd, after all.

Kaito's face perked up when he saw his childhood friend approach. He knew that if anybody could get him out safe and sound, it would be her.

"Ruri-chan! I was wondering when you'd show up!" He grinned, showing his teeth, and stretched his arms for show.

"The crowd is pretty nasty, but it looks like you've got an icebreaker there, huh?"

Kaito pointed to her luggage. "Do you think we could use that to clear the way to the bus? I've been having no luck getting through on my own."

She nodded.

"No problem, I'll get you through. I know crowds are a problem for you with your height!" The last part she said a bit more emphatically than the rest, with a smile that suggested she meant well.

She stood close to his side, looking at him to confirm that he would follow her, and started to move.

A BIT LATER!
[info]spinningwheels
2012-06-05 11:10 pm UTC (link)
On the train platform, a late arrival was puttering his way in the direction of the man holding the sign, and the tall, blue-haired entity behind him. Not that the wheelchair-bound Daichi Misawa noticed, with his eyes cast firmly downward at the ground as his electric wheelchair moved him forward. Passersby scattered to give him a wide birth, as he finally looked up to see the sign...and the...what WAS that, anyway?

The otherwise impassive Daichi's eyes went wide as saucers as he saw the blue-haired being behind the intrepid sign carrier.

"No way," he muttered, under his breath, shaking his head as he slowed his chair to a crawl. It -- she, had to be an android, right? He'd heard of them. Even seen a couple at functions his mother and father had attended,, but he had never seen one so...lifelike.

"Um," he stammered, voice low and quiet, trying to call as little attention to himself as possible. "Are there separate busses for the handicapped, miss, or are the regular shuttles handicapped accessible?"

This was strange, but Hell, so had the past year of his life.

The robot had taken up her pre-assigned place once more, after carrying a few loads of baggage onto one of the shuttles. She came out of standby mode once more with a brief whirring, grinding sound, and after a moment of searching for the user who had entered a query, she looked slightly down to find Daichi.

"Yes. Oozora Academy shuttles are accessible. I am authorized to operate their accessibility systems. May I assist you?"

He almost jumped -- well, shifted rather abruptly in his seat, anyway -- at the sound of her voice. He had expected something more...robotic, perhaps? She sounded almost human.

For the first time, he was beginning to have a sense of just what Oozora Academy probably was. His parents had drilled into his head that the place was supposed to be the best school in all of Japan. At the very least, it had enough finances to hire what seemed to be a state-of-the-art android.

"Y-yes, please," he stammered, still off-guard at all of this. "Thank you...what should I call you, anyway?" He wasn't sure of much, but calling her "robot" seemed highly impersonal.

Re: A BIT LATER!

The robot had no reaction to the stammering, or the slight jump, or any other obvious marker of discomfort; she was good, but she wasn't that good, and there were other priorities in her coding. Still, her voice remained remarkably human in tone as she responded. "You're welcome." A brief pause—the next response was cued up. "I am Estella." Another pause. "Please, follow me to the shuttle."

With that, she started walking out of the station again. Almost precisely the way she had the first time. She was nothing if not consistent.

Hideki approached the train platform with a smile spread across his face. His small bag carrying the few things he felt he needed. He wasn't coming with nothing, he also wore his long light jacket, his pockets stuffed with random electronics just in case.

He inhaled a pleased breath, adjusting the goggles on his forehead Actually going to school, and being there continuously would be a new experience, and new experiences were rarely bad. He quickly took in the faces of the crowd trying to memorize them. He'd be getting a chance to talk to them soon enough.

Alone and off to the side was a young girl, shorter than the rest of the students, with a set of large sunglasses on her face. She stepped off the train with her designer luggage rolling behind her. Ami gave out a yawn, remembering after a moment to cover her mouth as she did. She had a look of disinterest even though inwardly she was excited to start a new life far away from her old one.

And so Ami moved ahead toward the buses, rolling her large luggage behind her. She was so focused on her thoughts she didn't notice that was was about to run over someone with goggle's foot with her heavy luggage.

Hideki looked up just fast enough to see the person who was about to collide with him, and whom he was about to collide with in return. He stopped himself, and managed to merely get his foot run over letting out a hefty wince. He quietly reminded himself that given his history he ought to be able to dodge dangerous luggage, but when your distracted by new sights and smells your danger sense takes a back seat.

"Ow. I think you'll have to aim better if you hope to do serious damage." He tried to say with a bit of a grin hoping to ward off any unpleasant arguments. Still minor physical injuries were no reason to avoid making new friends.

Sadly, Ami wasn't so good at making friends. Especially when, in her mind, this boy was just suddenly talking to her for no reason. Growing up as a spoiled child, hadn't turned Ami out quite right.

"You should learn to watch where you're going," she said, in almost a 180 degree difference of what she should have said in that situation. She was almost floored that he had the nerve to introduce himself right there, too.

"Hmph, I'm Tanigawa Ami." It took a few moments for things to right themselves in Ami's brain. She was so used to being a completely different person, she hadn't learned to stop and think before she spoke. So after a few seconds she finally made sense. She was in the wrong, and he seemed to be simply trying to be nice.

"Y-You're going to Oozora too?" she asked, trying to change the whole tone of the conversation back to something cordial.
