Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Entry tags:daichi, hideki

Who: Daichi Misawa & Hideki Hirayasu
What: Meeting the new roommate.
Where: Boys' Dorm B-03.
When: March 10th, midday.

It had been a scant five minutes since Daichi's parents had left the dorm, with hugs and kisses and promises of a happy and glorious future at his new school.

It had taken Daichi roughly thirty seconds to dispel those notions as soon as his parents were out of visual range, and crumple back into his wheelchair, earphones plugged back into his ears as he listened to music.

His bed, the one on the far side of the room, had been neatly made by his parents, and the nearby closet and cubbyholes had been filled with his things. It looked homey, at least, as much as it could considering it was his half of a dorm room at a new school. Above his bed was a poster of the mildly popular American indie band, Glass Shattered Into Tiny Pieces. It was, he thought, about as good as it could get.

For a moment, he considered jumping into bed, to hide if and when his roommate arrived, but the electric wheelchair was a dead giveaway. Plus, it was better to get embarrassing and upsetting conversations out of the way up front. Whoever the Hideki person he'd been assigned to room with was, he figured that their first meeting would go better if he was up front about this, at least.

And so, Daichi spun his chair around, aiming the front at the door, so he'd see the other boy when he came in. There were some side benefits to rooming with the handicapped kid, he thought, wryly. For one, there was an attached bathroom, and the room itself was somewhat roomier than the others, or so he'd be told. Whatever the case, he did seem to have plenty of room to manuever in, which was a positive.

Pulling his earphones out, and putting them and his music player in the front basket of his chair, Daichi waited. Hearing a clatter down the hallway, he gritted his teeth, and prepared himself.

Hideki had wandered the campus aimlessly since arriving. His parents stuck around long enough to have a quick meal, and say their goodbyes, but they were often busy and he was used to taking his own initiative. To that end he expected a tour of the campus (and perhaps any mechanical work shops they had) would be for the best, learning your surroundings was always a good first step when arriving in a new place. He figured if he found the dorms it'd be a good place to stop and drop off his small bag, and low and behold the dorms had been found.

He stepped inside with his usual smile, and gave a quick once over. Of course he noted the boy in the wheelchair, but it wasn't anything he hadn't seen before (and it was an electronic wheel chair, that could be a fun way to talk about the subject.) But Hideki knew how easy it was for people to look at someone and see their injuries or scars, and forget they were a person, Daichi deserved more then that. Plus they were going to be in the room together for the school year, which meant they were going to have to get along. Also it was a pretty sweet room.

"Wow nice digs they've got us in. Lot of space." He said with a nod, lobbing his lone bag onto his bed, and then looking at Daichi.

"Hey Roomie, I'm Hideki, Hirayasu Hideki, and you must be Misawa Diachi. It's nice to meet you."

Watching the other student come into the room filled Daichi with...something. He wasn't exactly sure what, but he figured that it was a combination of trepidation and no small amount of jealousy.

The smile that this Hideki wore was easy and carefree, the sort of look that Daichi himself couldn't muster up these days for all of the tea in China. Still, he seemed...nice enough, really. Considering that having a roommate was a necessity, Hideki made a good enough first impression.

Even if he did seem, perhaps, a bit...friendly?

"Hello," Daichi offered, in response, offering his hand to the other man, his eyes looking into those of his new roommate. "Yeah, I'm Daichi. A pleasure."

It was six more words than he'd said to anyone his age in about three months.

Hideki reached out to shake the hand, his grin softening to avoid being overwhelming. There was an element of sadness that Hideki knew fairly well, and the last thing someone like that wanted was an overly cheery person talking about rainbows and sunshine and how great life is.

He dropped onto his bed, bringing himself to eye level for Daichi and nodded.

"So... I guess if we're rooming together we should probably figure out habits and all that, don't want any crazy surprises right?" He grabbed the bag and pulled it open, slipping out the paper thing computer and putting it on the desk before turning on it's holographic display.

"My parents are company people, my mom makes robots, I picked up the habit so I'll prolly be in and out of the workshop a bunch. I figure you don't need me trying to craft new engine parts in the middle of the night. Oh, we traveled a lot so I'm kind of awake at odd hours." He stood up and pulled off his jacket, draping it from the edge of the bed.

"But I promise not to leave machine parts all over the room... well your side of it anyways, I don't mind different kinds of music, or tv shows so you can watch what you want, and ya know if you ever need help with something you can send me a text. I'll give you my cell number."

So. Much. Talking.

Daichi simply wasn't used to it. Social interaction had once been a rather steady part of his life, but with rehab of both physical and mental varieties taking up so much of his recent life, he'd almost forgotten what casual conversation with someone his age was.

Did EVERYONE talk as much as Hideki? Had he himself talked that much, back before everything?

Still, Daichi listened to every word. The odd hours thing was a bit disconcerting, but Daichi wasn't the best sleeper to begin with. Everything else seemed reasonable enough.

"I'll be in here a lot," Daichi replied, drolly. "Beyond that, I can't guarantee much."

At Hideki's final statement, he pulled out his cell phone, one of the few objects generally keeping him sane during long bouts of hospitalization. "Go ahead," he said, ready to input his roommate's number. "Text's probably the best way to get a hold of me, anyway."

Hideki nodded slowly pulling out his phone, tapping it to wake it up then spreading his fingers apart to expand the holographic interface. He tapped the air to bring up his phone number, allowing Daichi to look at it.

"There we go." As he let it hover visible in the air he nodded.

"If you're gonna hang out here I can try and keep out of your hair. As much as I can. But hey if you feel a need to get out in the fresh air and do something let me know."

Fingers moved with practiced grace as Daichi tapped out the number. Over the months, he'd gotten quite adept with the device, far moreso than he'd ever been in the years where it was only occasionally used.

"I'll text you in a bit," he said, quietly, "so you can get mine also."

He felt...silly, somehow, for worrying so much. It was obvious the other kid was the curious sort, maybe even a little enthusiastic...but Hideki could also read the temperature of a room, and he seemed more than cognizant of the fact that Daichi was generally lukewarm at best.

"You don't have to," Daichi replied, shaking his head. "I...as long as you're not too loud, things'll be fine. Plus, once mom and dad bring my old wheelchair up, I'll be able to go around the track sometimes."

There was definitely something nice about having someone to talk to, at least, on more casual terms like this.

"As for going out..." He paused, and half-shook, half-nodded his head. "I appreciate it. Can't promise I'll always be amenable, but..."

The comment faded away, as he began to work at sending the text to his new roommate.
