Who: Reina, Daichi
What: The optimism/pessimism version of an unstoppable force meeting an unbreakable wall.
Where: Outside the dorms.
When: After school.

It was remarkable for quickly Reina had bounced back. She'd been out of things for a few hours, but as soon as she'd got started asking teachers what she'd missed she'd found a rhythm of sorts. She moved with her obligations, going to classes, going to library committee meetings, keeping her head down and gathering as many normal person things to do as she could.

And it helped. The structure supported her and once she started and gained momentum everything became easier. She'd started to plan, to make sure she could structure everything around a shadow nest if one came up. They seemed a lot more survivable when she started making plans to go to the grocery shop after them, as if a two-for-one deal on curry roux at LABOR would give her the strength she needed to fight. And maybe it would. It wasn't bad curry.

The school wouldn't let the Gardening Club at its own immaculate gardens, naturally, but they'd arranged for a discount on renting an allotment on the island. It had advantages - it meant that she didn't need to be doing gardening in her school uniform, for a start. She was significantly less tidy than normal, covered with dirt and sweat as she made her way back to the dorms. Seeing Daichi, she waved, smiling.

Daichi, meanwhile, was on his way back from the library after an hour and a half of actual legitimate studying. It didn't hurt that the library was one of the quieter places on campus, free of loud athletic sorts like Kaito.

He waved to Reina as she approached, slowing down his chair. She was actually one of the team members he didn't mind that much. She seemed nice enough, if in quite the dishevelled state today. Much moreso than she had been, even inside their...shared experience.

"Long day for you," he asked, voice neutral. "Did you join one of those sports clubs? I really should, if only so they don't yell at me to do it."

"Gardening club." She responded with a smile, shaking her head. "I'd just let everyone down if I tried joining one of the sports clubs"

She gave the idea some thought, then shook her head again. "You oughtn't feel pressured to join something. I'm sure our extracurricular activities count as a club for record purposes. If you tell the teachers you're wanting to focus on your studies, I'm sure they won't pressure you to join any other clubs."

"Not as much as I would," he replied, a strange look on his face. "Used to be different, but such is life."

It seemed like several lifetimes ago that he was on track for a very different life than he now had. The only reminder of it was a trophy kept buried in his closet back in the dorm. Everything else was back home with Mom and Dad, kept safely away from him.

"My parents think I should," Daichi said, continuing on. "This is one of the best schools in Japan, if not the best. A good transcript from here should be able to write my ticket to any university in Japan, right? That's what they tell me, at least."

How much he cared? Uncertain, but he at least put up an okay front.

"It will!" If it was possible, Reina sounded even more cheerful than usual. 'You are going to a good university' was one of the few constants left in her life after learning of the shadows. She might be in danger of dying. She might be cut off from the only form of support she'd ever needed to rely on. But she was going to go to a good university, and that meant she was going to survive. Dead people didn't get into universities, no matter how good their grades were.

"If we keep our studies up, we'll be able to get near-anywhere. We're lucky to be here, no matter what."

He couldn't help a short, very brief chuckle. At least it turned the corners of his mouth up for a brief moment.

"I'll worry about that a bit more when this is all over," he said, and realized that it ever BEING all over was a pretty big assumption. What happened if three years wasn't enough? Did they have control of some major university to ship them all off to for continuing the good fight?

Slumping back into his chair, he sighed. "Where are you off to, anyway? Dorms? Early night?"

"It's important to have something to look forward to. When this is all done with, we'll be able to go to a good university, and be surrounded by the most brilliant people in the country. We just have to-" There was a fairly awkward pause there while she tried to work out what it was, exactly, that they 'just had to' do. Not quite uncomfortable, but certainly noticeable. 'Survive' seemed correct, but hammered the gravity of the situation home in a way she wasn't okay with. "We just have to manage. I'm sure it won't be so bad."

She shook her head. "I'm just dropping in quickly to clean up. I still need to go to the store. LABOR has a great deal on Curry Roux right now, and I have a coupon on top of that. It expires tomorrow, so I need to head there tonight."

"If you say say," Daichi offered, with a wave of his hand. He was trying to be polite, really, but her "everything's going to be fine" mentality was...utterly jarring to him, to say the least. She seemed convinced of it, rather than Shizuru who said the words uninterestedly, Reina seemed to believe that just by thinking happy thoughts, everything would be fine.

He forced back a grimace, and nodded at her. "Sounds like you've got a busier evening than I do. Just going to lounge around a bit. Almost makes me feel bad, being lazy when so many other people are running around."

Similarly, she didn't understand how anyone could bear to think any other way. The world must be so terrifying, after all, if you let yourself believe it might not be okay.

"There's no need to feel bad about it. It's not as if other people would get less busy if you had more to do. And I'm sure people are running around because they want to."

"I guess you're right," he agreed. He'd been one of those people once, juggling track and a handful of other commitments, running about from here to there and doing a million things.

Now, well, he couldn't even run.

"I should probably let you get to what you need to do though," Daichi offered, with a nod. "I don't want to keep you, and I need to get back up to the room and order in some tempura for dinner."
