Pushing Me Forward (Fullmetal Alchemist, prompt 105)
Title: Pushing Me Forward
Fandom: Fullmetal Alchemist
Characters/Pairing: one-sided Roy Mustang/Maes Hughes
Rating: PG
Word Count: 260
Prompt: #105 - ghost
Summary: "Even after death, you're there pushing me forward, aren't you?"

You were always there for me, weren't you, Hughes? When I was going to blow my brains out, you were the voice of reason that stopped me from making an irreversible mistake. And for that, I owe you.

I know that's when I realized I loved you, even if you were a married man. Regardless, I kept the feelings to myself and just told myself you and I were best friends, nothing more.

So, when I felt myself creeping into the pits of despair, I thought it was all over. My mind went back to my atrocities during the war in Ishbal. A gloved hand grabbed the pistol on the table nearby.

Then I heard a voice.

"What are you doing sulking there, Roy? Who's going to protect your men if you're not there to protect them?"

I glanced up, and for a moment, I almost thought I saw a ghost of you, Maes Hughes. That same smile you would give me that kept me sane was across your face. And yet when I reached for you, you were gone once again.

Then I saw you out of the corner of my eye--ethereal and spiritual, but not physically.

I lipped. "Maes."

And you smiled at me, a ghost that kept me going in this, my darkest hour. I think I know why you were there, though. Even after death, you're pushing me forward, aren't you? This is why I love you, Maes Hughes. Even if nothing can ever come of it, and nothing was ever going to come of it.
