Title: Simple Matters

Characters/Pairing: Jeremy and Sylvia Goodman. (The couple John watches Dr Schreber and the Strangers transform from poor and rough to upper class and snooty.)
Rating: G
Word Count: 174
Challenge/Prompt: #43 - appetites
It's simply a matter of breeding, Sylvia knows. There are people and then there are people. The right kind and, well, perhaps not the wrong kind, but the less-right kind, certainly.
In her head she sees herself visiting the factory, standing in Jeremy's office overlooking the shop floor, men with dirty, rough faces staring up at her. She turned away, she seems to remember, with a little shudder, repulsed. She prefers not to think of it, but the incident resides in her mind, an unwelcome houseguest. Memory can play tricks on one, she thinks, but she won't dwell on such thoughts.
It's not that less-well-off people deserve to be that way, but, as her father used to say, the cream rises to the top. If she and Jeremy enjoy a fine lifestyle, then that is their due. No more, no less.
I said to him, Jeremy says, and she listens, taking a delicate sip from her wine glass, everyone must know their place.
Sylvia nods because yes, it's true. So very, very true.
