Who: Steve and Tony
What: I don't really know. Talking?
Where: Tony's apartment
When:
Warnings: Doubtful of anything much

The streets of New York city in the 21st Century scared Steve. It was strange for Captain America to be scared bu he couldn't help it. The long shadows cast by buildings hit by yellowed street lights hid things from his immediate sight - like the homeless begging for change and young men making drug deals - and there seemed to always be sirens in the distance. Normally he'd be in uniform trying to save those who couldn't save themselves but honestly Steve wasn't to the confident point in his life yet. Really he was just a young man, brought into the army and made into something amazing for the sole purpose of fighting.

They'd won the war which wasn't all that surprising but he'd looked up the names of some of his closest friends and saw they had died in the war. Of course some were still alive but many of his friends and those he considered to be brothers were dead. Gone. Yet he was left there in this new, scary world with few people who didn't seem to like him very much and to be honest, Captain America was confused and a bit lonely.

How he had ended up at Tony Stark's apartment door he didn't really know. Maybe there was something of the old Steve still left inside of him that had guided his footsteps to what had once been a comforting place or maybe it was just pure coincidence. However he was there now, standing in front of the door, dressed in a baggy sweater, a pair of jeans and flip flops. Raising his hand he almost knocked on the door before he pulled back...and then reached forward again before once more hesitating and taking a nervous step back. Why was he there? Why look for solace in a man he didn't really know?

Because it felt right. That's the only answer he could come up with. Somewhere deep down in his gut it seemed right to want to be with Tony. To crave the man's comforting embrace. So swallowing down the nervous lump in his throat he finally reached forward and knocked firmly, his hand immediately retracting back as if he were scared something was going to suddenly pop out and hurt him.

Tony had been drinking the day before, and was using the day to sleep it off. One day drinking, the next sleeping. He had a rotation going since Steve had gone crazy and turned into Captain America circa the Nazi invasion rather than Steve, who would watch television with Tony as the man did invoice shit for work. Great.

He heard the knock and yawned as he got up from the couch, wearing a sweater and jeans as well, and walked over to the door, peaking out through the...peeky hole, for that was what he called it, and furrowed his brow, opening the door.

"....What are you doing here?" He said after a moment of looking the man over. Since he had not been launched at with a hug yet, he was sure this was still the Steve he didn't know and who didn't know him.

"I'm not really sure, if that makes sense?" A pause before he shook his head. "Who am I kidding; none of this makes sense." Yet he looked a bit nervously at Tony, hoping not to be outright rejected by the man. With his hands stuffed into his pockets he just shrugged his shoulders gently in defeat.

"Something in my mind is telling me - no, urging me to come here. To come to you. In my gut I feel like you are important. Safe." Of course he didn't realize how silly what he was saying sounded, since he was being downright serious about it. "I'm scared of this world." Steve admitted quietly after a moment. "I thought you could help."

A hand raised to rub at his face as Tony sighed, "This is bullshit, I know it, and God knows it, and yet he sends it my way, the omniscient mother fucker," He murmured to himself before taking a breath and looking at the man.

"Of course you thought that. Come on in. Come on. Why not," He waved his hand and stepped back, "Might as well."

Of course Steve's eyebrows furrowed in confusion as Tony mumbled to himself but he seemed physically relieved the other man was letting him inside. With a faint smile he nodded to Tony and stepped inside the apartment, taking off his shoes and leaving them by the door. That was just Steve being polite and being, well, Steve-like.

Turning to Tony he was thoughtful, before he stepped cautiously toward the other man. He didn't exactly know why but he wanted to feel close to the man he barely knew.

Tony watched that with a cynical eyebrow raise, shutting the door behind the man and sighing. Great. Captain boy scout was in his house. And there wasn't even the perk of their banter or sex. Fun.

He watched the thoughtful step and rolled his eyes, nodding once before he just turned to walk towards the kitchen, "Did you want anything to drink? Anything to eat?"

"No." Steve answered carefully, seeming a bit disheartened when Tony just turned and headed for the kitchen. It seemed to him he was already making wrong moves and the man sighed softly to himself, attempting to come up with another plan of action. Fiddling with the sleeve of his sweater thoughtfully he took a few steps toward the kitchen before finally glancing up, hands in pockets once more as he leaned in the door frame.

The man's blue eyes shimmered with uncertainty even as he went over what he wanted to do in his mind while he stared at Tony's back. Finally, even though it went against many things the military had taught him, Steve slipped forward and moved behind Tony, wrapping his arms around the other man, resting his forehead against the back of his friend's shoulder.

Tony was getting himself a glass of water, and the feel of the arms made him drop the glass with a start, the glass breaking and glass catching at his hand as he twisted the top half of his body around to try and see what Steve was doing-this Steve didn't hug Tony, did he? What was this? A Nazi-killing move?

"What are you doing?" He said awkwardly, suspiciously even, as he eyed the man, other hand turning on the water to run his cut fingers under. Yes, he wanted Steve back, and oh, wasn't it nice to be hugged, but hey, this wasn't his Steve.

The breaking glass startled Steve who immediately took a few nervous steps back, scared he'd been wrong. In the military if a man hugged another man in anything more than friendship or brotherhood and someone else found out...well, they'd be berated and picked on really. So he was a bit worried that was what was going to happen.

Though when he realized Tony's fingers had been cut there was concern in his eyes and he stepped forward to inspect the wounds, watching the blood wash down the drain.

"I'm sorry. I just..." Steve swallowed. "It felt right. I thought it was okay. I'm sorry. Are you okay? Is your hand okay? I'll...where is the broom? I'll clean up the glass."

"I'm fine, it's okay, I just need a few bandaids," He shook his head, holding up his hand so Steve wouldn't go on to list all the boy scout ways of cleaning a wound. He didn't need that, "And you know, it is right when you aren't just...feeling around blindly in the dark for what you are supposed to act like, okay? Because as much as I love the idea of corrupting you in this form, I think my severely lacking guilt mechanism would go 'well hey now, Tony'," He shook his head as he went to get the broom himself, not bothering to let Steve do it. He needed something to do to distract him from the entirely too emotional feeling he had having Steve here but yet not having Steve here. It was weird and icky and Tony didn't like it but he wanted it to stick around for a bit. What was that about?

The man just moved to lean against one of the counters, waiting for Tony to come back into the room. So perhaps the hugging hadn't been the smartest move but it seemed he was somewhat on the right track. Maybe what he was feeling wasn't completely off just...his actions were.

"I just want you to hug me back." Steve admitted when Tony came back into the room and started sweeping up. "I'm scared and I'm lonely and nothing is right except you seem right and..." Dropping his gaze to the floor, embarrassed, the man frowned a little bit. "I'm over-stepping, aren't I."

Tony looked at the glass on the floor while Steve spoke, scooping it up in a dust pan once he had it swept and sighing when the man finished, "You are grasping at straws, Steve, that's the term," He put the glass in the garbage and took the broom back to the little closet before coming back to the kitchen, obviously resolved over something.

"Okay," He held out his arms, "Come here. We'll hug it out."

When Tony came back into the room, finished cleaning and left again Steve's heart sank. Though if the other man asked him to leave, he would. Perhaps he was lonely but not lonely enough to force himself on another person because that was simply selfish. However when his apparent friend returned and held out his arms Steve shivered and immediately stepped forward to settle against Tony's chest.

His arms moved around the other man's waist as he hugged him tightly, face immediately finding a resting place in the curve of Tony's shoulder simply because it felt right and oh so familiar. Sighing contently, Steve just squeezed Tony gently.

Tony sighed softly when Steve just leaned into him like it was nothing, Like the guy hadn't gone crazy, like they were just hugging. It was nice, of course, but it was also frustrating.

"There, there," He patted Steve's back awkwardly, just letting the hug go on.

"I could be him for you." Steve murmured softly, nuzzling his cheek to Tony's shoulder, eyes closed. "At least, I mean, I could try. If he doesn't come back." Of course by 'he', Steve was referring to himself from the future. Of course he hoped, for his own sake and Tony's, that the other Steve would return but just in case he didn't the young man was willing to try and be what Tony needed.

Since Tony, right that moment, was trying to do the same for him.

Tony stiffened, "What the Hell do you mean?" That was not possible, in his mind. There had been so much they had been through, together and apart, he had no idea how a younger Steve, one who didn't even know Tony, could be that for him. He took a breast, "Not that I don't appreciate the idea, but I don't think it could happen."

"Oh." Steve seemed a bit saddened by that and just nodded his head, frowning a little bit to himself. "Okay. I'm sorry for suggesting it. I just thought maybe if he didn't come back you'd still want...well, me in some form or another." The man shrugged and just continued holding onto Tony.

"At least until the other me is back, can we...I mean, can I at least pretend you care?" He asked quietly.

Tony sighed, closing his eyes, "It doesn't work like that, Steve. You....You don't know me. That is the basis for what I love about...About you. You know me but you still love me," He always marveled in that when he thought about him and Steve. The man with the morals that were practically bullet proof loved Tony Stark, known asshole and hypocrite. It was...It was nice t be loved by someone good when he knew you were someone bad.

"I do care, or I wouldn't be hugging you," Tony said shortly, shrugging his shoulders even as he held the man, "So don't even."

"I could get to know you." Steve offered softly, letting his head be moved as the other man shrugged. "And until the me you know gets back we can just be...friends." Obviously Steve didn't want to be left alone at all during the rest of the time he had to be there.

Which he hoped wasn't going to be forever.

"Can you tell me about him?" Steve asked quietly after a moment, content to still be hugging Tony, eyes closed. "About my future."

"I guess so," Tony said with a nod, patting Steve's back. He didn't know how that would do him any good, but he would try and help the man. Because it was Steve, even if it was a Steve he didn't know.

When the man asked about his future, Tony shook his head, "No. I'm not going to spoil it for you," He said simply, pulling away a bit, "Did you want to sit or something?"

"Sure." Steve nodded a little bit, yet when Tony stepped away he suddenly craved the attention. Craved the other man's body; wishing it was close to him again. However it wasn't and Steve let it go, turning and heading out to the living room. The young man dropped onto the couch, licking his lips a bit nervously.

"Am I happy?" Steve wanted to at least know that, and felt he had a right to know it. "Your version of me."

Tony sat down beside Steve with a sigh, thoughtful, "I think you are. Sometimes? I don't know. I hope you are," He said lamely, hand moving to rub at his eyes, "I assume."

"Do I look older?" It was something he'd wondered about when he had first accepted the super soldier serum. "I mean, do I age normally or do I stay the same? Do I age but just...slowly?" The young man wanted to know - needed to know. Would he grow up or would he remain as he was forever?

It was a scary thought for him and he frowned and looked down at his feet.

"A bit?" Tony said, looking at Steve a bit before nodding, "You look a bit older. Mainly in the eyes," He rubbed his cheek and lay his head back on the couch, "That's cheesy, but true. Who knew?"

"But I don't age any other way?" The man frowned and moved a little closer to Tony so their hips were touching. He leaned in and nuzzled his cheek to the other man's shoulder, eyes falling shut. "I wonder if I ever will." It was more of a question for himself than anything he really expected Tony to answer. With a heavy sigh Steve just tried to relax, feeling comfortable with his head against the other man's shoulder.

He leaned his weight a little more into Tony warmly.

"Hm," Tony felt the man lean to him and he glanced over before moving his arm with a sigh to put around Steve's shoulders. He had missed being closed to the man, and even if this wasn't his Steve, he would..have to do.

He could somewhat sense the other man practically giving up and into Steve's affections and though he felt bad he had to admit, in a selfish way, he liked the comfort. It was the first time since he'd arrived in the strange place he found himself in that he felt...content. Happy.

Safe. There were no guns where he was. No Nazis, no expectations from superior officers and no long winded lectures for failing said expectations. It was a sort of heaven on earth...but if Steve was honest with himself he hoped it wouldn't last too long.

For both their sakes.

Tony missed holding Steve. He couldn't help it, he did. The man had gotten under his skin and now that he didn't have him, he was at a loss. But this younger version, this Steve 1.0, he was going to have to do, wasn't he? For now, at least. And it was, in essence, still Steve. Even if he still thought the Nazi's were around and that Tony was a nice guy to hug, not so much a lover.

He gave Steve a peck to his forehead before he reached for the remote to turn on the television.

Beaming a bit under the peck to his forehead the man cuddled closer into Tony's side and merely yawned. Really he was feeling all the more better and comfortable actually and his mind was starting to slowly shut down.

"Mind if I take a nap right here?" Steve mumbled softly, already obviously nodding off.

Tony shook his head, "By all means," Since he had the television, he didn't see why not. He could entertain himself that way, really, while this younger Steve slept in his arms. That was not weird, right?
