WHO: Heather Kessler and Mal Reynolds
WHERE: The Carnegie Club
WHEN: Thursday evening
RATING: TBD
STATUS: Incomplete

Was it out of the ordinary for Heather to invite a complete stranger out for cigars and drinks?

No, it wasn't.

It was slightly out of the ordinary to know that the man had mistaken her for someone else, however. She licked her lips as she settled into the lobby of the apartment complex and folding her hands in her lap so that she could wait patiently.

She was wearing the red dress and carrying the woolen coat she was planning to wear outside on one arm. She had told the man the colour of her dress in order to make it easier for him to recognize her, after all. Heather shifted in her set and tapped the toe of one of her stilettos on the tile of the floor very quietly, waiting for this man (she hadn't asked his name and he hadn't given it to her) to arrive so that they could take the cab to the cigar club.

Mal was still trying to adjust to the new world he was in. He'd had a hard time believing that they were actually on Earth That Was, but the more he inspected things in the apartment, the more he was convinced that things weren't quite right.

He couldn't explain how Wash was alive again or why Nandi didn't seem to recognize him. No, she'd said her name was Lady Heather. Now he was meeting her down in the lobby for drinks.

He spotted the woman in the red dress as soon as he stepped off the elevator. Walking over to her, he smiled. "Heather? Hello, I'm Mal."

She nodded to him and stood as he arrived in front of her, offering him her hand. She had a strong handshake for obvious reasons.

"Mal." No trace of the accent he'd be hearing from Nandi, only smooth femininity. That part would be familiar, at least. Heather shrugged into her jacket and glanced to the door.

"Carnegie isn't too far from here, and I've called ahead to tell the we're coming in. They reserved my usual table." All right, so she took several men to the club. It was an excellent place to discuss business transactions in a relaxed atmosphere.

Mal frowned a little as Heather spoke. It was so strange that she looked just like Nandi but didn't sound like her.

He shook her hand and nodded. "So you're a regular of this place?" he said. "Have you been here long?"

"I've only recently arrived in New York. I resided in Las Vegas before I came here."

And she ran a successful fetish club before her daughter was murdered and she became obsessed with finding her granddaughter, but that wasn't something you just told strangers.

She glanced to the door. "We might hail a cab outside," she suggested. "I am already a regular to Carnegie - it's quite useful to bring clients there. Helps them relax and be honest with me about what they want."

Mal wasn't that familiar with cities of Earth That Was, but he was pretty sure that Las Vegas had been nicknamed Sin City. He was amused by this and intrigued by his companion.

He listened to her speak and nodded a little, wondering what kind of clients she had exactly. He had a suspicion that she had a lot more in common with Nandi than she realized.

"Well, then, what are we waiting for?" he asked as he headed over to the door and opened it for her.

Probably less than Mal thought. Her services to her clients were strictly professional, and there was no sexual contact on the records.

Oh, so he was a gentleman to some extent. She stepped out into the chill of the city once he opened the door for her and lifted a hand to hail one of the cabs over as quickly as possible. Once one had stopped on the curb, she slid smoothly in and hoped that Mal had enough sense to follow as she leaned forward to whisper the address to the cabbie.

"I take it that you are not exactly from around here."

Mal lifted his eyebrows as he stepped outside of the apartment building, looking around at the hustle and bustle of the city with interest. "So this is New York City." he muttered.

He was surprised at how quickly they got a cab and he did follow her into the back seat. He shut the door and then looked around the cab.

He snorted softly at her statement. "You could say that, yeah." he said, nodding. He doubted she'd believe him if he told her he was from another world.

She locked her gaze onto him the moment that he settled into the cab with her. There was no harm in finding a little more out about the man while they waited to arrive at their destination. Heather smirked faintly.

"Just how far away are you from? Do keep in mind that I'm considerably more ... open to strange ideas than you might think." After all, she'd sent a girl to a client that had claimed to be Satan - and she'd seemed like the real deal. It was hard to argue with that.

Mal glanced at Heather, raising one eyebrow. "I'm from pretty far away." he said. "I was born on another planet, believe it or not."

He watched her to see what her reaction would be. He'd decide to continue based on that. He didn't really expect her to believe it.

Another planet?

Well, was that any crazier than having a client who was Satan? Heather weighed the options and decided to give him the benefit of the doubt.

"And what planet would that be, then?" She made every effort to make her words sincere.

"A planet called Shadow." Mal said. "Trust me, you've never heard of it. It's not even in this galaxy."

He was glad she wasn't calling him crazy. That made him feel a little better.

"No, I can't imagine that I would have."

She took a breath and managed a smirk for Mal. "You were expecting me not to believe you, but I have only been here for a few weeks and I've already had some interesting ... clients."

"It was a peaceful planet." Mal said. "My mom had a ranch."

He raised an eyebrow, looking at her. "Well, no, I didn't really expect you to believe me. If the roles were reversed, I don't think I'd believe me." He wondered if it would be polite to ask her what kind of clients she had.

A ranch. Quaint and typical, she thought.

Heather nodded, glancing out the window for a moment. "Fortunately for you, our roles are not in fact reversed." She was honest with people about her business as long as they asked her directly.

Mal nodded. "True, but thank you for not thinking I'm crazy." He didn't want to add that he already felt a little bit crazy, what with his dead pilot suddenly showing up. "So what kinds of clients do you have, exactly?"

"While I haven't had my own clients in quite some time, I run what's properly termed a fetish club. It's a place for people to ... play out fantasies that they might consider private from their family or loved ones."

She suppressed the urge to smirk.

Mal was glad that he wasn't drinking something at that point. He might've spit it out. As it was, his eyebrows lifted. "Really? That's interesting." he said.

She arched a brow at him. "Are you all right?" Heather had been expecting a similar reaction.

"It's very interesting. And also rather tiring, I suppose." Catering to other peoples' whims.

He smiled at her. "I'm assuming that you enjoy it."

"Well," she admitted, "my daughter was still in College when she became pregnant." She didn't tell the man that her daughter had died.

"And I suppose I should be flattered that I don't look old enough to be a grandmother, but Allison is very young, still. I like to think that I look the age I'm meant to."

"Or you're a smart man for not wanting to overestimate. I've seen clients have that happen to them. Not ... pretty."

She licked her lips and then glanced out the window. They were pulling up to the Carnegie club. "Shall we?" She nodded to the door.

"I'd hate to offend you, especially on our first meeting." Mal said with a grin. He looked out the window curiously, checking out the club. "Yes, we shall." He opened the door and got out of the cub. He started to pay and then realized that he didn't have any currency of the world. He'd need to remedy that.

Lady Heather had already stepped in front of him to pay the taxi-driver with a bit of a shake of her head. She offered him her arm with an arched brow and then headed toward the club.

As they stepped in, the smell of good cigars wafted through the pleasantly dim club and she turned to Mal, measuring his reaction. "You'll find that I am not terribly easy to offend, Mal." She gave him a mildly teasing grin.

Mal took Lady Heather's arm with a grin and headed into the club. As soon as they were inside, he looked around and nodded approvingly. He could see himself becoming a regular there if his crew and he ended up staying there on Earth That Was.

"I'll remember that, Lady Heather." he said, nodding at her.

"And I'm very glad about that." She stepped over to one of the corner booths and sat down, arching her brow at the man as she did so.

"Would you care for a cigar or a drink? My treat, naturally." Heather was planning on having a snifter of brandy, at least, and thought it was only fair to extend the same opportunity to Mal.

"Both, actually." Mal said, nodding as he sat down across from her in the booth. He started to order his favorite drink, then hesitated, remembering he wasn't in his usual bar. He wasn't familiar with liquors from Earth That Was, so he was at a complete loss of what to order. "What would you recommend for drinks?"

"The men that I come here with are partial to brandy and scotch, but I'm sure that if you asked the waitress to surprise you, you would not be disappointed."

She smiled, waving the waitress over to order her favorite brandy and a cigar for herself (a Cuban brand thinly veiled as an 'expensive export'), as well as the same for Mal.

"Usually," she mused, "This is the point when I ask people what they enjoy."

Mal nodded at Heather's suggestion and when the waitress came over, he asked her for a good, stiff drink and told her to surprise him. He then leaned back in his seat, looking around curiously.

A smirk played across his lips at her comment and nodded. "I doubt 'long walks on the beach and picnics' are at the top of the list, usually."

She folded her hands on the top of the table and glanced over to him with a restrained smirk.

"No. What I hear more often, in fact, is more along the lines of 'I like to be tied down and flogged'...although we do get the occasional request for pony play, and for the customer to be dominant."

Mal's eyebrows lifted. His curiosity was piqued, not by the 'tied down and flogged,' that was pretty commonplace. "Pony play? Why do I get the feeling I don't really want to know?"

"Well, some people like to be treated like horses. Some people like to train said ponies. It isn't the strangest thing that I have ever heard, although I have little interest in it myself."

She pursed her lips and arched her brow at him. "I get the feeling, however, that I am not merely giving you ideas. What do you enjoy, Mal?"

She smirked.

"Before I closed my business in Las Vegas, we cleared twenty grand a week easily." So ... yes, a rather large killing.

"I suspect revenue here will rise to that level in a short few months."
