Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Elle and Richard
What: Coffee and friendly chatting. It's what Richard does best.
When: Monday evening
Where: Undetermined coffee shop #1
Rating: PG for now

Richard knew that in this day and age, from what he had seen on the streets and read in 'magazines' that he had seen being sold on the corner by the hotel ... asking a woman to coffee was not unheard of. That didn't mean that he was particularly used to doing so, however, or that it didn't make him nervous.

But the girl had seemed nice enough and his curiosity about her 'talent' was far too great to ignore. He tugged on the collar of his jacket absently and glanced about, waiting for who he assumed was the girl he was waiting for.

Oh, for God's sake. Had he forgotten to give his name -- surely she wasn't going to come at all. How improper could he get, honestly?

"Richard...is just fine. It is a pleasure to meet you, Elle." His father had told him that he was going to regret this, but she seemed like a perfectly nice (and very pretty) girl. Adam was routinely someone whose opinion he didn't trust, anyway.

He smiled just a little and then glanced out the door. "Truly I do not know where we might go for coffee, but I am sure that there must be many cafes around here." He'd seen several, at least.

If Elle had seen that little message, she would have laughed and acted completely innocent as usual. It wasn't her fault that Adam thought she was a nutter, right? Well maybe a little since she was one. But Richard didn't need to know that. So far so good though, but mostly she would have been way amused at the thought of Adam actually having a kid.

"Ah well then it looks like we'll get lost together then. It can't be too bad. There's usually a Starbucks in every corner in the city.." she just hadn't been allowed out much. She pointed with one hand towards the door. "Ready to go? You can pick left or right out of the building. It doesn't matter to me."

"Perhaps ... left." He wasn't sure why he'd picked that direction other than the fact that 'Starbucks' seemed more familiar from the left than the right. Richard offered Elle his arm so that they could walk to the door and head outside.

Honestly, he was perfectly fine with remaining oblivious to Elle's sanity deficiency.

Her eyebrow raised up a bit at his arm offer but she took it anyway. She guessed he was a gentleman. How quaint. She hadn't run into many of those before. She put her arm through his and headed outside without a word. Once outside, she headed towards the left down the sidewalk. "So what is it that you do? I mean if you do anything.." she laughed just slightly.

"Well, admittedly before I was here ... I was but a foot soldier. I have been working at a book store not too far from the hotel now, though."

Because there wasn't much work for a foot soldier. Elle would be right in assuming that he was a gentleman -- probably one of the truly old-fashioned ones that she would never expect in a place like New York.

"A foot soldier? Hm. Sounds vaguely familiar." She didn't really know what she would call herself actually. Just one of the Company. Ex-Company anyway. "A book store huh? I've never had a real job.." she confessed with a sigh. "Well I mean one that required going out and meeting people."

Her shoulder shrugged a bit. "How's the book store? Is it.. I mean is it totally boring?" She'd think it was totally boring.

He smiled faintly.

"It is not so bad. People are very nice and I for the most part organize and clean the shelves." In other words, he didn't have to deal with people all that often -- that was the cashier's job, he supposed.

"A young woman such as yourself should not have to work, at any rate. Surely you must have many suitors."

Suitors? Not have to work? Right. Elle kind of stared at him a bit, "Uh.. nope, I don't actually.." but she could think about that later. "What time period are you from anyway?"

Honestly she meant it as a joke, but it wasn't like she didn't know time travel was possible. It obviously was, even here. And he obviously wasn't from this time period. Or else his parents were seriously conservative.

Richard rubbed the back of his neck. "The 18th century, somewhere in England most recently." But he'd been born in Italy. Apparently the men here were partially blind or something of the sort if Elle didn't have suitors lining up ...

Or perhaps she was some sort of outcast. He pursed his lips as he considered that fact, but waved it off as silly suspicion. Obviously Richard had considered it a serious question.

Whoa he really was from another century. "Wow.." she said good naturedly. "You look good for being.. 300ish years old.." she paused for a minute. There was someone else she knew that was around that age. But that didn't mean anything right? There were all kinds of people she didn't know like this. At least she thought so, she'd have to ask around.

"I like working, I just don't think I'd do well behind a desk. And my .. dad.. he was.. overly protective. I mean .. really over protective. No boys." Which was mostly the truth. He just kept her locked up. Not that she was trying to think about that.

"I cannot say I am that old," he admitted, not wanting her to get the wrong idea about him. "I happened upon this place without realizing it from my time to here. It was very strange indeed."

And distressing once he found out that his father was here and he had some sort of power that he didn't want to think about right now. He smiled faintly, though.

"I cannot blame your father for not wishing you to see men, but to keep them away altogether seems rather cruel."

That explained why he wasn't all hip on the times like some people she knew. "That's definitely got to be weird. I can't imagine something like that." And thankfully she hadn't never been to the past. Strange was putting it mildly. She kind of felt sorry for the guy.

"Well he kind of just kept me away from everyone, but that's a really long story.." she gave a nervous kind of laugh. She still didn't understand half of it and her father would never get to answer her questions. "And not very fun to tell.. it's kind of boring really."

Finally she spotted a Starbucks along the way and pointed "Oh look, coffee.." announcing cheerfully before heading that way.

Richard's brow creased with concern. Her father didn't let her see anyone and it was ... boring? She was obviously nervous about telling people.

"Regardless, then, it is good that you are here now." He blinked when she pointed out the Starbucks, nodding and stepping ahead of her to open the door for Elle.

"Yeah, I guess so.." she wasn't quite sure about that, but it was better then being nowhere. She felt like he had been no where before. Now she was here getting coffee, it wasn't all bad. She smiled and headed inside the shop and got into line. "Have you been into one of these before?"

She was curious what kind of things he had done and hadn't done but she'd wait and ask all those questions later. Maybe.

"I have been to a place like this, but I have been trying to keep to myself -- and I did not want to spend money." Richard smiled slightly and followed Elle into the line, squinting at the board.

Hmm. He would just ... ask them for a black coffee. That would be easy enough, right? Sure.

"Why've you been trying to keep to yourself?" she was genuinely curious. If she had been to another time she would have been ready to explore. But then she would have been freaked out someone would think she was a witch and try to burn her so maybe not!

She gazed up at the board and her eyes lit up, "Oh I love October, they have pumpkin spice. Best stuff ever."

"Oh? Perhaps I will have to try that, then." Now that he was working he was much less worried about running out of funds. "I was ... somewhat overwhelmed by this place and its new things." He smoothed his hand through his hair absently, ducking his head a little.

"And my ... family here is not someone I am eager to know." At all.

"Yeah it's good, if you like pumpkin." Which she obviously did. She'd have to get a job because her money wasn't going to last forever. That's what daddy was good for. Money. And now he wasn't here. She nodded her head a bit, "That's understandable. I would be freaked out too.."

Elle's mouth made a little 'oh' shape. "Ugh.. family. Who needs em?"

He rubbed the back of his neck. "I would be most pleased if mother was here, but she is not." It wasn't as if he saw her often because of his work, but he always sent her money. What would she do for supplementary income without him?

It was worrisome. "Please, order what you like and I will treat you."

"Maybe she'll show up.. you never know. Seems like it's just random.. my parents are dead. I guess I don't have to worry about that." So far she hadn't seen anyone who had come back from the dead. After she does, then she'll be likely to change her tune.

Elle turned to him as they moved up in the line, "Are you sure? I've got a couple of dollars in here somewhere." Where she got it from, she wasn't saying.

"I am sorry to hear about your parents -- or I would be, I suppose, if you sounded more like you liked them. I would not blame you for a dislike of your father for keeping you to himself."

He shook his head, though, when she turned to him. "I do not mind in the least. It is only proper that I treat you since I am the one who asked you to coffee." Obviously.

"It's.. I dunno, dislike and like. I don't know. I want to think he did the right thing but..." she trailed off, pursing her lips a little. Mostly she just wished that people would tell her the truth instead of just hinting at it. But that wasn't going to happen.

It was amazing she hadn't zapped him yet or anything. Maybe she was just waiting for the right moment. When it was their turn, she ordered a pumpkin spice latte and let him order whatever he wanted. "Thanks.."

To be fair, Richard was probably going to be honest with her if only because he was terrible at being anything but. Really, he was about the worst liar you would ever meet.

"Of course." He ordered the same thing out of ... well, lack of knowledge of coffee-products, and then nodded toward a table. "Would you care to have a seat?"

Nodding her head, she waited for their coffee's and then headed to one of the empty tables. Thankfully they'd turned on the head in there so it wasn't too cold. "So um.. how long have you been here?"

She wasn't quite sure what else to ask without seeming like she was being questioning.

Well good, maybe that meant people didn't stay here for very long. Somehow she didn't think that was the case though. "Me? Oh goodness.. a couple of days? Maybe a week. I don't even really know what day it is. I've just been trying to find my bearings.."

She sipped her coffee and mm'd a bit. Pumpkin was good.

"Well thanks. How about in exchange if you find something you want to... try.." there was an innocent look but she looked a little mischievous over her coffee cup. "Let me know. You know, something they didn't have from your time."

She tried to think of something, her nose scrunching up. "Have you ever been to a movie?"

Richard had to try very hard to keep from blushing. He glanced down to the coffee cup that he had been holding while she'd looked like that and noticed to his distress that the porcelain had cracked a little.

Damnit! Subject change.

He drank down the coffee quickly (so as not to have it leak through the fine cracks) and then ... tried to stop his eyes from watering.

"I cannot say I have."

If Elle noticed what was going on, she didn't let on. She noticed the blushing though, it just kind of made her grin a bit more. Well at least she still had it.

"Are you okay?" he looked like he drank coffee too fast. She reached over and rubbed his back a little. "Shouldn't drink coffee so fast.. it is warm you know.." Oh how nice she was being.

"I'll have to take you to a movie then. They're fun. Sitting alone in the dark, eating popcorn." And possibly making out. Not that she was thinking about that.

Richard cleared his throat rather loudly and then glanced sideways to Elle, nodding.

"Yes, I just ... thought it was rather good." He knew that was a lame excuse, but saying 'hey, I didn't want to dissolve the cup before I got done with it' was also a little too crazy. He managed a half-smile when she rubbed his back (okay, because girls didn't touch him and that was ... new).

"Thank you. I ... will accept, although I do not know if I would feel right allowing you to pay."

Glad that he wasn't choking before she got a chance to play with him, Elle nodded her head. Yeah he was lying but she didn't know why. Hmm. Very interesting.

"Well.. it's not a problem. I guess you've got to get used to the idea. I think most girls now a days would be upset if they didn't.. well the ones who aren't gold diggers. Get upset if you think they can't do things for themselves."

He blinked. "It is not a matter of a woman being able to do it for herself; a man courting a woman should be prepared to provide for her, it is only responsible."

And then, realizing what he had said ... "Not that I would ever -- court you without your permission, of course." Ahah...hahaha.

Awkward.

"Well I guess ladies now like to provide them for themselves. Though I guess you've got a point.." it was hard to explain she supposed unless you were raised up with that ideals.

She grinned at him brightly, "Well.. maybe if you find out you like me.." she said half coyly and half with that mischievous look again.

So forward a woman!

And not in the entirely unpleasant way that the harlots at the towns had been when he was at home.

He could not hide his blush this time even if he had wanted to. He cleared his throat, ducking his head.

"If you would not protest to a more formal outing which I may treat you to," he began carefully. In 'modern' terms: a date! A real one, even.

Oh he had no idea what he was in for if he thought that was forward.

But she'd be glad not to be compared to a harlot.

The blushing was cute. Okay so now she reached up and ran her finger over his cheek. "I'd like that a lot.." she put her hand down, looking guilty. "Sorry, I have a bad habit of touching people.. you're cute when you blush."

He had tipped his cheek toward the touch before he had fully realized it wasn't his mother but Elle who was touching him like that, as he wasn't used to it being anyone but his mother ... which only worsened the blush.

"Perfectly all right, and ... I thank you. A compliment means more coming from a lovely young woman."

Elle found herself blushing a bit herself. "You're welcome.." she bit on her lip and then went about drinking some more of her coffee so she wasn't touching him anymore. The more she touched the more she would get the urge to give him a little spark. Can't have that. Not yet.

"So when do you want to go to this movie? That's usually a date thing."

"I work most nights until around six. Will that be a problem?" He would allow her to set the exact day other than that, though, since he didn't want to interfere with any of her prior engagements.

She was blushing now -- did that mean he was doing something right?

She shook her head, "Nope I don't think so. I don't have anything else going on at the moment, so it's whenever you're free.." maybe if she got a job she'd have to shuffle around a schedule but here's to hoping she didn't have to do that.

With her coffee finished, she pushed her hair back over her ear. "Do you want to sit around some? Or head back?"

"That sounds good to me. I trust you." Which was a bit ... odd to say to someone he'd just met, and hopefully he meant only as far as picking out a movie for the two of them to see ... but still.

He nodded in return. "Is there anything that you would like me to bring?" He was planning to bring flowers, of course, but that wasn't something you told the girl.

Aw he trusted her. Probably a very bad thing to do, but it wasn't like she was going to tell him that. Not many people trusted her after all. "Fantastic.." she did look excited about going at least.

Oh hm, something to bring? "Um.. I don't think so, just bring your appetite. Popcorn is very filling. And there's lots of candy." She'd never gotten flowers before. Huh.
