Who: Liir and anyone else who'd like to come by [open!]
What: A bit of exploring
Where: Union Square Market
When: Wednesday afternoon and early evening
Rating: PG at the moment.

He had ventured outside of the apartment building, legs itching curiously to see this strange new world he was in. He was struck by the strange newness of certain features, grown like moss on the ancient stump of Civilization. The great mechanical devices that littered the streets, odd self-contained locamotives, were nothing to the massive buildings that towered above all and the overbright signs and flags that hung above every inch.

Eventually, however, he'd found something familiar enough: an open market, filled with fresh produce and farm-provided meats, cheeses and wines and pots full of fragrant flowers. The variety of items was almost dizzying and his lack of funds made it less entertaining than it might be, but the benches provided were free enough even if there was a pack of girls some few seats away who kept looking at him oddly.

A City. It was a City. He'd just have to learn this one as he'd learned the Emerald.

No less uncomfortable was Richard Sanders, hands shoved into his pockets and body covered with thick clothes. He'd at least discovered that they were ... warmer than the other clothes in his closet.

It wasn't until a moment too late that he bumped into Liir and nearly dropped the small bagful of luxuries that he'd purchased to remind him of home. He recoiled like a man possessed and ... well, looked relieved Liir hadn't burst into flame or something equally as serious.

"...sorry."

He looked up, green eyes curious about the other man who seemed as ill-suited to the setting as himself, and shook his head.

"No concern necessary. Not a scratch on me and it's a public enough spot."

He looked around thoughtfully.

"New to the city?" he asked.

He sighed slightly, more than relieved that the other man wasn't harmed in any way.

And then he exhaled lightly and nodded rather quickly. "Yes, very much ... very much new to the city. And the continent." And the century.

That got an eyebrow raise from him.

"Oh?"

His eye went to the bags.

"You look a touch more acclimated than I am, at least. I've only arrived a couple of days ago."

He shook his head.

"A little more than a week, perhaps. I changed in what little coin I had and purchased this. I am rather out of money." But.

He offered his hand politely, brow arched. "Richard Sanders."

He stood up and reached out to take the hand.

"Liir Ko," he said, using his taken name as opposed to any he might yet take.

"I was lucky enough that someone took interest in me and provided a bit of food to my lodgings. I'm on the lookout for a job, though unsure of how to go about it."

And Richard rubbed his hand through his hair.

"Likewise," he admitted with a slight frown, "As I am entirely unclear on what I might do here. At home I was a soldier, but that is not terribly useful in this city, it would appear."

"Well met then," he said with a bow of his head.

"I've played that profession myself. To an officer, but not to anything I'd call success."

He nodded.

"Only a few minor problems we have had need of support in during the last few years, admittedly."

"Oz is good at making enemies. Especially of itself."

He shook that off before looking about.

"Generally, this would be when a fellow offers a drink, especially with a brewery within sight," he said as he spotted the Heartland building across the way. "But as I've said."

Instead, he looked back and forth.

"Where are you headed? I'd like to wander a bit more and a direction never hurt a wanderer."

"Well," he paused, hoisting his bag a little closer to his chest. "I was thinking about heading back to Prideview, honestly. I am not terribly adventurous any longer."

Especially not here, with what he'd ... learned about himself.

He blinked.

"Prideview?"

He looked about before leaning closer.

"I believe I live in the very same place. Are you perhaps" and now he was close enough to almost seem intimate "not of this world?"

He drew back not because the closeness bothered him, but because he worried for skin-to-skin contact of any sort.

"...this world, yes. But not this ... time." Richard managed a slightly nauseous smile. "It is still very unfortunate."

He pulled back and nodded.

"A different world, a different time," he said, glancing about. "And all of this as alien as Kansas."

He sighed and shook his head before grinning at the other man.

"Two soldiers looking for peacetime commitments. A sorry pair indeed!" though he sounded anything but sorry. Perhaps closer to amused.

"I would much rather be home. Now that I am here my mother shall have to support herself and I fear that I will become as useless as my sorry excuse for a father."

He frowned a little to himself. "I apologize for my ... intensity. Finding my father here has been a most unpleasant surprise."

"Having found some... people known to me in my youth," he said swiftly with a scrunch of his nose that spoke of distaste, "I can certainly understand. And there are matters waiting for me back in Oz as well. But we work on those things we can and leave the rest to... well, perhaps to no one, but at least no one is meddling."

He nodded his head towards the apartment building.

"Care for a companion on your walk?"

"I would certainly not complain." He didn't mind the company so much, really -- as long as Liir wasn't touching him he wasn't in any sort of danger.

"And I would be happy to share." He had picked up a bit of fresh fruit, some meat. Nothing too extravagant.

Liir wasn't prone to touching, an unfortunate side effect of his upbringing.

"No need to share," he said as he started walking. "Keep and enjoy your treasures, though thank you for the offer."

"It was an offer for a reason, but if you are declining..."

He shook his head, though, and sighed quietly. "This place is very ..." He waved a hand, thinking of the word. "Unsettling."

He looked sideways at Richard, asking the reason.

"I'm only declining to be kind to another fellow with a hurting purse," he said honestly.

Then he looked out at the world.

"I can't disagree."

"Everything."

He wasn't in a good position, that much was obvious. Liir probably wouldn't guess the reason, though.

Normal people didn't have his problem.

Liir wasn't exactly normal people.

"What troubles you the worst?" he asked, satisfying both something of a perverse desire just to know and some inclination to help.

"I..." And he made sure they weren't walking by anyone important as he spoke, "...when I found out my father was here, I tried to strangle him."

Tried being the operative word.

He nodded to that.

"Entirely fair. I've never had parents, but there's a certain amount of hate I have for the woman who raised me, whatever apologies she attempts to make now."

There was also a greater measure of love, but he wouldn't acknowledge it any more than she would acknowledge him.

The fact was that he had nothing but contempt for his father as far as anyone was concerned.

He furrowed his brows, though, surprised Liir didn't ... think more of it. It was a pleasant surprise.

"Yes, of course. Some things simply cannot be made up. And my brother being dead because of our father..."

Yeah, that didn't help either.
