Who: Gabriel Gray & Heidi Petrelli
What: Showing her around
When: After Heidi's arrival
Where: The Prideview Apartments & New York
Rating: PG
Status: In Progress

Gabriel was relieved with the appearance of someone who, while a stranger and clearly related to the people that were acting oddly about him, didn't jump on him for being horrible or dangerous or a murderer. The chance for company that would at least know the circumstances of the area that he had came from while not being frightened of him as someone that he didn't even know was more than he could resist. Even if he was still trying to get used to this city himself and the small yet noticeable differences, he had enough time under his belt in New York in general that there was no issues with him navigating.

Wandering down to the lobby, Gabriel lingered by the doorway and glanced back towards the stairwell, hands in his pockets as he leaned back against the wall. While he was more than patient, he also was prone to worry. It shouldn't take that long to get downstairs, should it?

"One of my sons felt it necessary to come over for an impromptu visit." To prove a point about him having 'powers' ... but that wasn't something she shared with strangers. Instead, Heidi nodded.

"And yes, that would be me. I'm settling in just fine aside from my sons being rather older than I remember." And having Nathan here.

"This place seems to have little consideration for what we remember," Gabriel said, a hint of ruefulness in his voice as his smile dampened and then softened, offering her his arm. "Especially when it comes to time. But it does have most of the basics right, at least."

Relationships, major areas of the city, the important things.

"Shall we?"

"I suppose that depends on what you consider 'basic'." Because she'd been -- okay, she'd been lurking on the journals -- and Nathan seemed to think that she ... wasn't married to him anymore.

That was troublesome. Heidi took his arm without hesitation and nodded. "Where did you have in mind? I haven't been to New York in months, but ... well, that wasn't this New York anyway. So ... take me where you like to go."

"The city's mostly the same," Gabriel said, his voice taking on a tone that he understand exactly what she meant. It was easier not to talk about the things that made less sense than anything else that they encountered in this place. "The parts that I know by heart are. Which, to be perfectly honest, aren't exactly around these buildings."

His manner went slightly sheepish as he peered over at her, curious yet apprehensive as he asked, "Been to Brooklyn much?"

Oh, Gabriel's husband has left her for a blond bimbo Homeland Security agent too? How interesting.

Heidi grinned when he spoke. "Brooklyn? Yes, more often than not. It does wonders for a political campaign bolstering support in low-income locations, you know."

And she had a soft spot for children. Surprise, surprise.

Low-income locations. Wow. It was lucky that that really couldn't have damaged his self-esteem much more than it already was. Clearing his throat, mostly out of embarrassment, Gabriel nodded to her statement. "Mm, I suppose it does even if most of the things that politicians say to the residents are just a well spun fabrics of lies."

He knew well enough. He'd been tolerating those people with flashy smiles and empty words for most of his life, since he'd gotten old enough to actually listen and care about what they had to say. Not that it was ever much.

"I can't say anything for the Nathan Petrelli that's here now," and she couldn't keep the thread of hurt out of her voice, "But when he was running back in ... our New York he was genuine. I wouldn't have willingly let him lie to anyone." Even to get votes.

She knew well enough that she'd worded her statement poorly before, but she wasn't about to apologize for it. She shook her head, though, and continued, "And you don't have anything to be embarrassed about." Just so that he knew.

"An honest politician, and here I thought that was an oxymoron," Gabriel said, chuckling a bit as he lead her out to the street, raising his free hand to hail a cab. "Would be a nice change from the others, but I don't think I'm that far along. Timeline wise, that is," He said as a cab pulled up. Leaning down, Gabriel pulled open the cab door, holding it for Heidi to get inside.

Her second statement provoked a smile as he nodded. As much as he felt differently sometimes, he wasn't about to protest. "Bit awkward, to be living somewhere else after nearly 30 years in the same basic area. I'm getting used to it."

"In most cases I'd say that you're right," she stepped easily enough into the cab, half-flattered by the fact that he'd opened the door for her. Refreshingly gentlemanly of him, she thought.

"I sympathize. I lived in Nantucket for a long time before New York ... and now being back here again after leaving is a little overwhelming too."

"Nantucket?" Gabriel asked as he climbed into the cab next to her, closing the door. "I didn't think anyone actually lived there, just that it was a vacation spot for people with more time and money than they knew what to do with."

She shrugged. "I suppose that's probably true -- but my parents lived there, so I lived there. Simple as that."

Heidi glanced to him again, curious. "I don't suppose you've met anyone here not related to the Petrellis? There certainly seem to be ... a lot of us."

Sounded oddly similar to his attitude about Brooklyn and Queens sometimes.

"There's a few, yeah," Gabriel said, offering her a sheepish smile. "The people on your floor are usually your best place to start when it comes to getting to know people. The room assignments seem to be mostly random."

"I'll ... keep that in mind."

At least he was attempting to be helpful. That was more than she could say for her ex-husband and ... well, her son had only served to freak her out more than anything.

"I'm honestly debating keeping to myself as much as possible until I can find out more about this place."

"Another good plan," Gabriel said as he gave the cab driver an address to go to before sitting back next to her. "Though, I'm sure there's got to be at least a few people around here that are sane and reasonable in comparison to some of the people running around here."

"I'm sure there must be," she agreed, quirking her brow. "Although thusfar you have proved the most sane."

Which was ... probably not a great sign. Oh well -- better than Nathan. Heidi was an expert at pushing things she didn't want to think about from her mind and keeping them from bothering her until she was alone, after all.

"I'm not sure whether that's a good thing or a sign that this place is ultimately doomed," Gabriel said with a laugh, grinning over at her. Well, at least some of the awkward in this situation was starting to dissolve.

This was nothing compared to dinners with Angela Petrelli. She smiled slightly and bit her lip, glancing out the window.

"I'd certainly be fine with it being a good sign."

As they crossed the bridge into Brooklyn, Gabriel glanced out the window, a smile on his face at the familiar setting, the reassurance of the predictable settling over him as he turned back to Heidi, "Shouldn't be long now. Just a few more blocks," He said, grinning at her.

"What's your preference? Chinese, Italian, or Mexican?"

It took her only a few seconds of hesitation. "Mexican, if it's all the same to you."

Nathan wouldn't take her to a place like that, she thought. Italian reminded her far too much of the Petrellis.

"That works," Gabriel said with a grin as the cab pulled up to a spot in front of an address that looked relatively abandoned. It wasn't anywhere specific, but it was a good starting point and central to quite a few things that Gabriel knew well that he had found existed in this New York as well as his own.

"There's a little cafe a block or so from here, Las Noches," Gabriel said as he climb out of the cab, turning back and offering her a hand out. "Best Mexican in the city, bar none."

Heidi took his hand as she stepped out of the cab, glad at least to see that someone had managed to become a gentleman at some point. She smiled lightly and resolved to simply enjoy the evening for what it was: time out with someone who could be a new friend.

And quite a handsome one at that.

Pausing to pay the cabbie, Gabriel tapped the car on the roof just before it pulled out and back onto the road. Leading her down the next block, Gabriel pointed out a few of the other stores that were along the street. They were all single outlet shops. Mom and Pop establishments that were mostly run by the people that actually lived in the apartments over the storefronts. It was like a throwback to old times, and while it wasn't very developed, it was a quaint atmosphere if you weren't expecting to get hurt around every corner.

"It's really a nice enough place to live ," Gabriel said. "We might not have a lot of fancy things around here, but we get by," He said as they finally reached the corner cafe, a few small tables set out in front of it. Two of the workers seemed to be sitting, chatting and just waiting for someone to come along.

It was certainly not what she had been expecting -- admittedly her visits to these sorts of areas hadn't been particularly long or drawn out. She let Gabriel lead and nodded once they reached the corner, taking in the scenery with what she hoped looked like genuine interest. It was genuine interest, but she'd become so used to covering things that she felt up that she wasn't sure whether she'd appear genuine or not.

"I'm sure it's lovely," once one convinces themselves they aren't going to be mugged, at least. It felt a bit like an adventure, but Heidi would keep that to herself for now.

She wasn't going to be as long as he had something to say about it. Gabriel might not have been the most physically strong individual, but he'd often been able to use his height in order to get himself out of situations like being backed into the corner by someone who wanted something from him.

Stepping over to one of the tables, Gabriel pulled out the chair for Heidi, smiling over at her, "Mademoiselle," Gabriel said with a playful lilt in his voice, gesturing for her to sit.

Her lips twitched into a smile the moment he pulled his chair out for her. She took a very graceful seat and then looked over to Gabriel once he was seated as well.

More often than not, Heidi found herself avoiding situations where she could be in some degree of danger. After losing the ability to move her legs and regaining it through ... powers she didn't exactly understand she wasn't about to take unnecessary risks.
