The Phantom started slightly - he had ordered the priest to leave him be, and hadn't been expecting anyone to come into the church before he departed back to his basement lair - or, at very least, the apartment he had claimed above it.
"I have been here but a few minutes, Monsieur, admiring this rather wonderful architecture," he replied, making a rather grand sweeping gesture to emphasise his point. "The priest, should you wish to find him, will... presumably be rooting around the back and putting together his services."
Or, at least, that's what this amiable little Phantom had left him doing - the fact that he knew Christine was in this city had put him off his once-fond habit of pointless killings.
