Dr. Jonathan Crane | Scarecrow (Batman) ([info]here_to_help) wrote in [info]prideview_nyc,

Entry tags:harleen quinzel, jonathan crane

Who: Jonathan Crane and Harley Quinn
Where: A vaguely private meeting place
When: Now
Rating: TBD

He was taking a huge risk, even inviting disaster into his personal life simply by holding this meeting with Dr. Quinzel. Still, Jonathan Crane was more prone than ever to take risks after the attack on the Narrows. A man with little to lose rarely hesitates in putting it all on the line. So he had called Harleen Quinzel, agreeing to meet someone that was public (for cover) but not too public (for an entirely different type of cover). Nervously, he waited, mouth dry.

He wasn't afraid. Oh no. He was above such emotion. Fear controlled human psychology, but he was much better than that. So why did the persona of fear control him?

Except it didn't, no sir. He was his own man. Crazy, but determined to move on with his life. And besides, if he tried really hard most people didn't notice he wasn't all there.

What could possibly go wrong?

Well, isn't this fun? It was a good thing they had agreed to meet later in the afternoon or else her perky personality would have given him a headache. He could stomach her cheerful nature now that he was awake for several hours. Now that he was meeting her in person, the memories returned to him. She had worked at Arkham, and he was honestly surprised to see her here after holding such a cushy job.

"Hello, Dr. Quinzel. What brings you all the way out to New York City?" Already, he was probing for information under the guise of simple small talk.

And the real question: Why was she willing to have a partnership with him? She had to know about what happened, they reported it all over the news and Arkham underwent several changes after the event. The media was completely candid about his involvement, going as far as to pin the entire mess on him. "Would you like anything to eat, by the way? It's on me."

Aww, wasn't he just a sweetheart. And he didn't seem to have any idea that she was just as much of a criminal as he was. How interesting. So the good doctor was from the past then? That was an interesting development. This place was getting more and more fun by the minute. Mistah J would want to know something like that.

"My employer came here, so I came along for the ride," she said with a grin. Oh, if only he knew who her employer was. "Besides, Arkham and I didn't quite work out."

She shook her head at his offer. "No thank you," she said with a smaller smile. "I was just planning on having something to drink." She'd eaten earlier when she'd taken care of her puddin's dinner. "And how have you been, doctor?"

"What'll you be having?" He had enough to order some cocktails, wanted to make a nice first impression. He smiles at her, infusing it with false warmth. Unless he was losing his touch, or Harleen was better than he thought, she should hopefully fall for it.

"Oh, and is your employer alright with you opening another practice, or are you sneaking about under his nose?" He smirked at the last. If that were the case, interesting times were ahead. He didn't mind sheep stealing, if the pay off was worth it. "In case you couldn't tell, Arkham and I didn't quite work out either." But that was probably old hat to her by now, yesterday's headlines.

[In fact, the police probably are on their way at the moment.] "So, what brings you to me? I do have a colorful reputation." He would admit that much, it had dogged him from his short tenure at Gotham University. All the doctors at Gotham would whisper about it in the corridors when they thought he wasn't about.

"Vodka martini, please," she said, keeping it simple. No need for an especially girly drink when she's trying to project a professional persona. Harley would have ordered a redheaded slut, especially if Ivy was around.

"He's not in the psych business," she said, "at least...not this end of it. You probably know him." It was a calculated risk, but she wanted Crane to trust her. She looked at her nails. "Mister J doesn't care what I do in my free time." Not entirely true. He might be a bit annoyed if he thought she was getting a life of her own. She was never sure, the way he ran hot and cold. "Oh, I know all about that. It's what makes you the ideal partner."

She smirked ever so slightly. "I like colorful reputations, Dr. Crane," she said with a shrug. "Monotone gets old." She was already enjoying this. "They aren't going to be looking for you, you know? It's like this is a whole different world."

He nodded, ordering her martini and a rum-and-coke for himself. He didn't bother with what he should be ordering at a business meeting. Straight liquor simply wasn't his style.

The name piqued his curiousity. If her employer wasn't at their end of the psych business? That obviously meant he was insane, probably criminal. "Oh? I don't think I know anyone that uses that moniker. Do you have any hint as to his identity, if I do know him?" In another person, his tone would have seemed as if he were teasing. He wasn't quite that light-hearted, and yet managed to pull off the sentence without sounding the least bit threatening.

He barely maintained his mask of normalcy at the last shock. "What do you mean, they won't be looking for me? All of Gotham was on a manhunt the last time I checked." He words were clipped, carefully obscuring the anxiety behind them. "We're in New York City, not some mythical world where everything is suddenly better."

It wasn't a matter of should so much as thinking there was a magical difference between "grown-up" drinks and not. In some ways, Harleen was still very young. Harley wouldn't have cared. She wondered when she'd started thinking of them, herself really, as separate people.

"Oh, you know him, Doc," she said with a smile. "You're a smart man." She was surprised it was taking him so long, what with how active her puddin had been. "He's not an easy man to forget, y'know. A real class act, Mister J. A regular joker really." Why yes, she was capable of subtlety. It wasn't that she was a stupid woman, she just didn't see the point of putting in the effort if she didn't have to.

"You haven't been paying much attention to the message boards, have you?" she asked. "People talking about a rift, showing up from the past and the future...or thinking so anyway. If you look it up? Gotham doesn't even exist." She felt a small thrill at knowing something he didn't. "Have to say, it's nice to have a clean slate."
