Who: Jonathan Crane and Clio
Where: A coffee shop
When: Nowish?
Rating: TBD

All right, so she'd agreed that meeting Jonathan in person was a good idea. That didn't mean she wasn't nervous about it - interacting with mortals always made her antsy for some reason or another and she had never really figured out why - probably because the muses rarely did nice things for people the first time around.

She smoothed out her hair and waited in front of the shop with her arms crossed over her chest. At least she had the advantage of knowing what he looked like since she had her knowledge about him - that was a plus. Now all that was left was to wait.

Hopefully he'd be on time. Lateness wasn't something she much cared for.

He was known for his punctuality, a trait molded by numerous court dates and several heists. Often, running behind meant all the efforts of previous weeks were wasted, and you were caught. No, Jonathan Crane was early to his date with Clio, careful to stand across the street and watched. He mulled over the prospect while he did so, wondering why he had actually agreed. Usually such meetings were confined to business deals in his life, not social company.

He had never longed for any of that. He had been accustomed to solitude, and more than happy to continue down that path he already knew. People could never be trusted in the long run.

It wasn't too late to leave, but he ignored that urge, instead crossing to the proper block. Hopefully she would be easily recognizable.

She spotted him immediately and managed a slightly sideways smile. "You're early," but since she was there as well, she was also early - which was a good sign if there ever had been one, right?

Right.

Clio was very certain that he was Jonathan Crane, so she didn't think twice about asking his name. She pushed a dark lock of hair behind her ear and tried to keep her anxiousness under control. It wasn't that she worried about saying the wrong thing -- she worried about saying too much and scaring the poor man away.

He could only hope that she was the person he intended to meet, and not some random crazy on the street. He had a habit of attracted them, like flies to honey. It probably had something to do with being the director of an asylum.

It probably had something to do with the fact he was crazy himself.

He shoved aside any errant thoughts and smiled politely at the woman, noticing her nervous gesture. "It's a habit that is hard to break, I'm afraid. I assume that you're Clio?" She'd better be. The whole situation was rather surreal for the young man, he didn't often socialize without prompting from some ulterior motive.

"That would be me." After a moment of hesitation (but just a moment), she offered her hand to him.

You'd think that after a few thousand years of socializing with mortals, she'd get the hang of it. Apparently not as much. Then again, when muses fraternized with mortals things tended to go awry rather than well.

"It's a pleasure to meet you in person." Because knowing things about someone was always a little odd until you fully put a face to the knowledge.

He took the proferred hand, and wondered what to do with it. Should he kiss it? No, it wasn't a date. Should he offer his arm? Just as archaic, and still not a date. After a brief paused, he settled for shaking it. "It's a pleasure to meet you," usually the statement was acerbic in nature coming from his lips, but this time it was spoken in earnest.

He nodded towards the door, "Shall we go in?"

[Oh, come on. Let me play with her. We don't need her.]

She shook his hand gently and nodded.

"Of course." Once she dropped his hand, she pushed open the door and waited for Jon to step inside before she followed. It was a habit she had, being at least a little bit dominant -- her sisters were always very feminine.

She lacked a sense of humor and she was abrasive at times. That was her in a nutshell.

"What will you have?"

Jonathan didn't have the time or patience to pay any mind to traditional gender roles. In the end, it was a lot of petty posturing by mostly insecure males. He preferred it when his companions could keep up with him, most managed to louse that up quickly. Genius certainly had its downsides.

"I'm honestly not sure. I think I'm in the mood for tea." He wasn't really a coffee type of guy, preferring to stay away from the bitter drink. Besides, being jittery wasn't good for the nerves. "Do you have anything in mind?"

Ahhh, small talk. The basic slog that humanity forced itself to endure.

"Lady Grey." It was what she drank most often when it came to tea, and she felt that it was only fair to drink what her companion was. Besides, coffee had always been rather bitter for her.

At least she was decisive. When you drank tea for as long as she had been, you grew to know exactly what you were in the mood for during what sort of situation. Lavender always helped her stay calm, so Lady Grey it was. She gave the man at the counter a little nod and handed him a few bills -- no need to wait for Jonathan to order or decide, right?

Because it wasn't a date.

That was a choice that wasn't quite common. More of the populace preferred Earl Grey, and not the other variation. It was surprising, but Jonathan was almost intrigued by the decision. Nonchalantly, he stepped up to the counter. He was in the mood for something with a bit more kick to it, so he settled for chai.

This was about two people (he was loathe to use the term friends on such a casual acquaintance, or anyone really) going out for a drink. Usually, this was done at bars but for the more sophisticated (or pompous) the setting tended to be a coffee shop. Scouting out a table, he gestured her over and snagged it before any of the university students could claim it.

"So..." he said, letting the sentence trail off. "You seem to know a lot about me." He smiled, weakly at the thought. And at the time he'd lost while talking to her last. He didn't remember half of what had been typed. That was generally a bad sign.

"Both of you," she corrects quietly. Bringing out Crane in a public setting isn't something that will be good for either of them and she knows it, so once she has her tea (the waiter brings it over before too long along with Jonathan's) she changes the subject back to herself in order to give him something solid to focus on.

"I know a lot about most people, honestly. If they existed in the moments before now, that is." People from the future she was a little shaky on, but this place had done odd things with even that. She wrapped her hands around the cup and took a slow sip of it, keeping her eyes on him.

He really was quite handsome, and she suppressed the sudden warmth that was in danger of creeping across her cheeks by ducking her head.

"It comes with the territory." Thankfully their table was relatively secluded, so she didn't feel so odd talking about herself.

It's almost as if her words send bolts of electricity into him, straightening his spine and setting his teeth on edge. The mind was a powerful thing, and he was still determined to deny that the Scarecrow was anything more than a tool to frighten others. One that he knew how to utilize. Frowning slightly, he sips his tea, listening to the rest of what she has to say. It's fascinating, and she's already proven it to be plausible.

"So I suppose you've been around a long time, then?" He couldn't quite imagine that. Wasn't really sure he wanted to. Life was already lonely for the short span they had to live it. Why draw it out any more than one had to?

After that, you really needed to get a hobby. "So, do you just know everything, or is it from observation?"

"Observation makes it more ... vivid, exciting. I know the bare facts of most people as soon as I have an inkling of their name, but meeting them allows the small gaps to fill in far better."

She didn't mind being immortal -- not really. She had the company of the others -- her sisters, Dream, the other Endless -- when she needed it most, and she'd come to find that passing the days reading books and correcting them (things inevitably became changed from the original version) filled up quite a lot of time.

"And yes, more than a few thousand years." Clio laughed very quietly and took a long sip of her tea -- no need to blurt your life story to him, Clio.

"It's ... not as horrible as you'd think," she assured him quietly. He seemed intelligent enough to think on the subject now and again and to weigh the pros and cons.

"Interesting. Is that why you're so keen on meeting up?" Ulterior motives, he should have guessed as much. Everyone had them. The idea of an immortal knowing all the details of his life wasn't entirely palatable. He had moved to start with a clean slate.

This in essence was the antithesis of a clean slate. "Still, that seems horribly lonely." He assumed he could write a thesis on the topic, but if people like Clio existed, he would simply have to surrender the idea into more able hands.

"Horrible? That wasn't my assumption. Although I must admit you have the potential to be the ultimate voyeur." He smirked at the last, amused at the idea. Wouldn't it be fun to study her?

She shot him a curious look and then laughed, shaking her head. "I was keen on meeting up with you, Jonathan, because I wanted to meet you and make sure that you were all right."

Clio ... had always had a terrible white knight complex. The man in front of her was definitely someone that she felt like she should help. Letting him get taken over by Scarecrow was not something she wanted to see happen.

And then...well, she lofted a brow. "The ultimate voyeur? I suppose that the people watching me would be able to claim that title, honestly."

He stiffened at that, like a wild animal would bristle. "Oh, everything is just peachy, I'll have you know. Moving is rough, but I'm sure I'll get through it." [Just ignore the subtext provided, and all your problems will go straight away.]

Shut up!

He didn't appreciate people nosing into his business. Perhaps it would have been fine back when he needed it, as a small child living with an abusive and mostly unhinged grandmother. Now, it was only a nuisance. He was fine. And if he wasn't find, he didn't need some bleeding heart white hat trying to fix all his wounds.

"Oh, and you're being watched? Is it the government?" The last was in jest. It was still possible that this was all a hoax.

She laughed. "There are always people watching, Jonathan. You -- as a psychiatrist -- must know that." Right, as a psychiatrist -- and not as someone who had something awkward and strange living in his mind.

Taking a slow sip of her tea, Clio folded her hands onto the countertop and continued to watch him.

He was still cute. Whether he wanted her help or not, he'd caught her interest.
