Site update

I know I haven't done it yet, but I am still planning on updating the site. Life has been rather hectic. For anyone's who is interested I posted about it in my personal journal. I do plan on doing the update as soon as things calm down, but it might be a few weeks.

I do know of one big bug the site has. If you have your password saved in Firefox, you may not be able to post to a community or change your icon when you go to update your journal. The best way to fix this is to remove all of your saved InsaneJournal passwords.

Sorry about that, but I figured all of you how have paid deserve to know what is going on.

Thanks! Though I must admit I'm a user of the evil IE!

Not sure if this would be any help, but this is something an RP friend made for LJ and Firefox, so maybe it could be modified? The tool is at http://www.gweep.net/~slarti/Gweep/LJlogin/ if you're interested.

And thank you again for such a great site!

I use Firefox but remembered passwords are a pain so whenever that annoying dialog comes up I'm always like "NO GO AWAY OK STOP ASKING ME STUFF".

*gummies you back!*

I am horrible and use the same passwords over and over for my RP journals because otherwise I'd never remember them all!

has glomps!

Me too XD But at least it's a random string of letters, and I have a back up password and one with numbers in as well. And they're sure as hell not written down anywhere. I used to come up with the most obscure passwords for my characters though, one of them was the characters birth date converted to the calendar system that was in use in the game, and I also had his birth year as a pin on one of my old cards, but his birth year was never actually listed anywhere because on the site all it had was "current date"on the main page and on character bios it just said how old they were, and the bank card of course had nothing to do with this random sci fi rpg character anyway. I have, uh, never had someone figure out one of my passwords, anyway.

more gummi!

Dang! Scariest password story? I had a boss once who use to write all of his computer passwords on his computer monitor... with indelible ink!

I have.... badger badger!

Daaaaaaamn.

At least for my bank account you have to figure out an obscure password AND the nine digit user number that is in no way related to any of my actual bank account numbers, and it blanks out most of the numbers in my credit card number once you're in as well. I basically grew up knowing this stuff, it boggles me how completely unworldly some people are on the internet.

Interestingly enough, I use Firefox and have no problems with posting and uploading images, even though I do have my passwords stored. This may or may not be because I have been attempting to adapt LJLogin and have a semi-functional version installed in my Firefox. The things I haven't been able to get it to do, at this stage, are recognize which account is logged in, and auto-switch between accounts -- two things that I think are a cookie issue. If you'd like, I can send you a copy of my working files; maybe there's something in there that'd key you in on why others are having problems with saved passwords.

Actually if you have more than one password stored its not a problem. Firefox attempts to autofill the username/password fields if you only have a single username/password saved into the browser. This confuses the update.bml page and assumes you are trying to log in as a different user.

Aha! Hurrah for having multiple accounts, then. :D

Will there ever be a way to purchase a rename token?

My friend bought me a permanent account with my old user name from LJ... but now due to avoiding drama, I would like to change the username.

You can purchase one now. They are available in the IJ store (http://www.insanejournal.com/pay/) for only $5

*smiles* I'm slow. I posted this before finishing the FAQ.

BTW, thank you for this place. I love it here!

Thanks, I'm glad you like it. And remember there are no stupid questions. Only stupid people ;-)

*grins*

Considering what I do for a living? I can completely agree with that!

Oh, and what is it that you do for a living?

Technician for a Military Medical help desk. :)

Ohh, that's gotta be rough. I've done help desk type work before (tech support for ISP and webhosting) and I don't envy you one little bit.

There are days that I want to be able to reach through the phone.

Like yesterday. :)

I've always thought it would be fun to install a button that would allow you to send a little zap to the person on the other side.

Oh I completely agree.

User on Phone: I haven't used my log in and password in four months. Do I need those to get into the system?

Me: No sir, you just press your forehead against the monitor of your computer and you can log in by osmosis.

Hey Squeaky:

So given what happened today, have I mentioned just how glad I am that I moved my primary journal efforts over to this service? :)

at first

Yeah, at first I thought it was that my journal had finally gotten suspended over there at El Jay cuz of the protesting sorts of icons I was making. Alas not to be so.

Then I thought: another DDOS attack. Every time those two B men open their electronic mouths over at lj_biz, 10 thousand loyal fanfic fans get pissed at them. And I do too.
[I didn't know much about fanfic til the first Strikethrough. Round Two coming up.]

Then I found the exploding San Francisco thing.
And I am sorry to hear that.
For the folks who live there and have no electric.

El Jay lost my love even more with the new silliness over at their biz. But I have been double posting there and here-- I do have one community there I really care about yet.

Back to the topic at hand, I can't switch my userpic on my main journal posts on this laptop but I can on the main puter. Firefox for both.

It doesn't much matter to me truthfully.

Thanks for filling us in though and for the warm welcome to here.
Hopefully there will be more and more folks migrating here as Six Apart keeps falling apart in terms of blogger bluster anyways.

p.s. Insane merchandise. Must have. Insane merchandise. Yes.

Any chance you'll add the base code for Flexible Squares as a theme option in the future?

I'll have to look to see if it is included on the open source part of the code. Unfortunately there is a lot of stuff that LJ owns the copyright to that I can't leagaly take.

Makes sense - Thanks for taking a look.

Just to be clear - so if I go into my saved usernames/passwords section of firefox and tell it not to remember the IJ ones it means I can change the userpic when I post without a problem?

Cool, thank you for that, that's really helpful to know. It was bugging me yesterday when I'm trying to move all my stuff from LJ over to here and some posts (ie fic challenges) I want to have specific userpics with. I was having to post and then edit.

Yep, you got it. Or you have have it save more than one. The problem happens when a single username/password combo is saved.

I did figure that out about the password, eventually. Maybe stick it in the Help or FAQ?

Also, the site was inaccessible for an hour or two tonight. Do you have anyone to help when the server goes down in the middle of your night? Any kind of status update? LJ used Twitter, and that seems like a good plan.

Newbie comment

Hi Squeaky! I just joined IJ and bought 6 mos. paid. I have come here from LJ because I prefer your TOS, and friends and I are checking it out to see if it will make a good home - so far, so good.

I do want to mention, though, that I'm not too crazy about the mental illness theme. I have some friends at LJ who would consider moving over here but regard that as a barrier. I think they're taking it all a bit too seriously, personally, but I'll admit I'd rather not have to click on "my diagnosis" to see my user info. Is there any way of getting some options on those nav menus?

Hi there. First of all, I'd like to say thank you for being so welcoming to everyone coming over here from LJ, and for so obviously wanting to work with all of us. It's a very refreshing change, and I've been encouraging others to use your service.

I'm not certain if this is the place to make this comment, but I was curious about paid accounts for asylums. I recently bought paid time for an asylum, because I'd rather the members not see advertising when they post and comment. I was happy to pay it, but I do have an issue: We still have advertisements on the default comment pages. If I enable custom comment pages, there are no ads. I would much, MUCH prefer the default comment pages, as this will be a community with a very high comment to post ratio, and it's easier to read. Seems to me if you pay for a community, the ads should be removed on all the pages for it. What do you think? Is this possible?

Thanks very much!

I will look into disabling the ads on this, but the way it was designed is that you wont see ads while logged in as a paid/perm user.

I never considered this, but I feel your observation is fair. I will look into disabling ads on all paid accounts profile pages.

Thank you SO MUCH! And for the quick reply, too.

Thank you for this - it's very timely

I do have my password saved and use Firefox but have experienced no problems posting to communtities. I do, however, have the choosing an icon problem when posting to my own IJ. This is a fairly recent 'bug' for me and I get round it by posting an entry and immediately edit it. But then, even though I can choose an icon for the entry, it will neither display nor allow me to browse my icons while in edit mode.

Thanks again.

I'm having a great time here on ij, and it's great to finally be free of Lj's persistent incompetence and draconian rulership.

is THAT what it is? I thought it was me and my install of Firefox.

I've been getting around it by simply immediately editing the post right after posting it, to lock it to filters or the icon I want. (That's one of the things that happens too, it doesn't get the custom filter option either.)

Good thing I have the admin console automatically flock all my post.

Now I finally have the answer to my problem! Darn Firefox! :D
Thanks for the info/update. I was pulling hairs as to why I couldn't go through all of my lovely icons when I post. I so appreciate it!

What's annoying:

Doing something perfectly normal on Insanejournal, no warnings that the site is down on Twitter, and getting a 500 Internal Server Error:

===
Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was
unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator, webmaster@insanejournal.com
and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might
have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

Additionally, a 500 Internal Server Error error was encountered while
trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
Apache/1.3.37 Server at insanejournal.com Port 80
===

But what's doubly annoying:

Trying to REPORT this error to the e-mail address given, and discovering that:

===
This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification

Delivery to the following recipient failed permanently:

webmaster@insanejournal.com

Technical details of permanent failure:
PERM_FAILURE: Google tried to deliver your message, but it was rejected by the recipient domain. We recommend contacting the other email provider for further information about the cause of this error. The error that the other server returned was: 550 550 5.1.1 <webmaster@insanejournal.com>: Recipient address rejected: User unknown in virtual alias table (state 14).
===

If Squeaky prefers not to get e-mail messages reporting site errors, then the error page should say so.

It's just annoying to be presented with an e-mail address and invited to report an error, only to discover that the e-mail address is not in use.

Hello. Is there another community for permanent accounts? I see this one has not been updated in some time. Anyway I have a question. Are there plans to fix the view thumbnails option? I hope so because for us with permanent accounts and lots of userpics it would be very helpful. I love this place btw. Thanks for insane Journal.
