( who ) Honey [&] Pearl
( what ) Friends hanging out just cause. Also tea. Tea wins.
( where ) Honey's room! :D
( when ) Right after this conversation in Pearl's journal.
( warning(s) ) lolololoololololololololololol /brb dying forever

It wasn’t all that often that she went out about with people, honestly, Pearl tended to stay within the confinement of her bedroom walls either doing homework, having guests over or watching the Steele Samurai rescue the world one day at a time. But having heard about Honey’s situation she wanted to go visit him to see if he needed any help—apart from simply sharing a nice cup of tea with him. Truth be told, she was in need of the tea to help calm herself from being upset and worked up about the upcoming selection for the play her class was putting on: Peter Pan.

After looking through her cabinets, Pearl managed to find a box of Chamomile tea, possibly some that her Mama had left over from a visit; something told her that Professor Snape was not a fan of Chamomile after all. She wandered along the sidewalk toward Honey’s quad with the box of teabags in hand and a bit of a skip in her step, moving quickly. It was silly of her to think that the person who was helping the blond boy with his issues at the moment might be someone bad, but Phoenix Wright was her Papa after all and she had been on a number of cases with him. She’d be surprised not to have a bit of sleuthing in her—or a bit of worry for things like that in the very least.

Reaching the porch, Pearl climbed the small amount of steps and moved to the door, lifting her small fist to knock on the door. She briefly wondered if Honey would be able to make it to the door and decided she didn’t want to make him go through the trouble. Turning the knob, Pearl peeked into the quad, stepping into the common area and closing the door lightly behind herself.

“Mister Honey! It’s me, Pearl!” She called to let him know it was she who was entering the quad. Taking a few steps, she paused her movements and tapped her fingers lightly over the box of tea. “Did you want me to come help you from your room, um, o-or anything like that?” She felt a bit odd having to ask, but if he needed the help, Pearl certainly didn’t mind. Honey was a friend, after all and she was the type of girl to do anything for her friends.

Silence.

Complete and utter. Unless the vibrations generated counted. Honey had gotten better at feeling those, although the carpet in his room wasn't helping much. So he didn't hear Pearl open the door, call to him or walk inside.

Holding onto Usa-chan and giving the doll a few pats, Honey stood and felt his way to his bedroom door. A few moments later and the door eased open as he switched to groping around the area, one of his hands opening and closing on air, the other still holding Usa-chan.

To look at him, he looked normal. His eyes were opened, but not focused on any specific area, as if he were dazed or lost in thought. Feeling around some more as he took a few steps away from his room, Honey paused in his steps, resuming them again almost as quickly. Open, close. Open. Pause.

His free hand paused, half-closed, and he stretched it as far as it would go. Whoever or whatever was in his room would signal via squeezing one of his wrists, or finger spelling 'journal' or 'comment' before spelling the entry or comment in question. Relaxing his hands until his palm was flat, Honey waited to see what would happen.

After a moment, Pearl mentally gave herself a kick. She’d completely forgotten already that Honey no longer had the ability to hear things—so he wouldn’t have heard her knock, or her words. Moving to the table, Pearl set the box of tea down and reached to pull off her coat. She’d have to get the teapot out at some point but for now she had to focus on finding Honey; which was much easier than it seemed since he came from his room all of the sudden. Jumping a bit from hearing the door open, Pearl blinked at him and even tilted her head lightly when he moved about some.

Raising her brows she opened her mouth to speak but only found herself smacking her palm to her forehead having remembered he wouldn’t hear her again. The little girl wondered what she was supposed to do in order to make her presence know to the older boy and looked to his extended hand. Communication was certainly going to be something of a new experience for her in this situation. Thinking a moment she simply gave a nod of her head, toward herself mostly and stepped toward Honey.

“Um, um… I…” Great, now she was talking to herself. Extending her own hand, she reached to touch her fingers against Honey’s to let him know she was present. It was the only thing she could think of doing, not knowing how else for him to ‘see’ that she was there since his sight was missing at this point.

Taking her hand, Honey leaned towards it, sniffing much like an animal would. Not recognizing the smell, but feeling that the hand was about his size; Honey reasoned that it was Pearl. Leaning back, Honey moved his free hand around again and then spoke; his voice harsh from not being used that much. To Honey it made sense.

His sense of smell had hightened, as had his sense of touch, while his speaking hadn't stopped; it had just been substituted for another form. To put it simply, Honey had forgotten that his vocal chords could still operate.

"Pearl! Hello." he said, almost looking in the direction he thought she was standing in. While he could talk, talking back to him could prove a challenge. His throat ached dully, and he cleared it. "Sorry." he said quietly. "It hurts."

She gave a shake of her head lightly, but then realized that he couldn’t see it. Letting out a light sigh, she tried to think of how she might communicate with him. Touch was a bit difficult and she could have easily written her words if he had sight to see them. She frowned lightly, trying to think of how on earth to tell him it was alright that his throat hurt, or at least to tell him hello properly. She simply gave a soft shake of his hand and smiled lightly to herself.

“Gosh, this is going to be hard.”

She was muttering to herself, looking around the room—as if for some reason that would help her talk to him. Pearl took a moment and then realized that he was moving around with the aid of his palms guiding him, touching her finger to it, she slowly took the time to write the word ‘Hi’ onto it to see if maybe that would work with him. It was an idea she took from Helen Keller—and she would have done the hand signals into his palm that she saw in the movie, but she certainly did not know how to do the gestures properly and didn’t know if Honey understood them. This would have to do and she hoped it worked.

Spelling! Or at least writing. Which was close enough. His other arm came free as Usa-chan landed on the ground with a thump. Taking Pearl's palm, Honey turned it, feeling when to stop when her palm was up and began to slowly spell back to her. The hands he had gotten used to were using the ASL alphabet, but he could adapt.

'Did you bring tea?'

Her large eyes blinked a few times as her palm was taken and flipped over. She even giggled as his fingers brushed along her skin a bit but she soon realized that he was writing in return to her and the giggling came to a close.

It took her a moment; she had to really concentrate on understanding and feeling which letters he was writing. To help her concentrate, she even closed her eyes tightly and tried to spell the word via her thoughts. Most of it she missed, not having expected him to write back to herself as it were, but she smiled when the word ‘tea’ was spelled out onto her palm with a question mark following suit. At least now there was some form of communication between them, she decided that she would have to keep things short when writing on his palm.

Like him, she turned his palm over to write back to him, finding it sort of fun really. Smiling as she jotted out, slowly to make sure he got all the letters: ‘Yes. Should I make it?’

'Sure!' came the reply. Letting Pearl's hand go, Honey moved to find Usa-chan. Locating the doll, he stood back up and then reached past Pearl as he began to move towards the general area of the kitchen. It had taken him quite a while to get there the first few times, but after the third; Honey had gotten adapt at remembering the general route, and the location of the fridge. Not that it was very hard to miss.

Nodding lightly, she let her hand fall to her side and moved back toward the table, casting a glance over her shoulder at Honey as he moved about but smiled when she realized that he would be fine in his journey through the kitchen to wherever it was he was heading, she assumed the table though she wasn’t entirely certain. She picked up the small box of tea from the table and carried it to the counter where she set it down once more and proceeded to look for the teapot. That took her a small moment to find it but once she did, everything was set to go. Filling the kettle with water, Pearl stood on her tippy toes to turn on the stove and set the kettle down onto the proper burner. Now all that was left was to wait for it to whistle and signal its being ready. Knowing it was going to take a bit, she searched the cupboards for some mugs and dropped a teabag into each to prepare for the water.

She then moved to sit down at the table to wait for the kettle to be ready. Kicking her legs lightly, she waited until the whistle of the kettle and when it went off she hopped up from the chair to get the mugs ready and poured the water into each of them, then carried them over to the table to sit them down. Once they were set down, Pearl pushed Honey’s toward where she thought he might sit. She’d have to take his palm to tell him where it was, and write into his hand asking if he wanted milk or sugar as she didn’t know how he took it.

He was doing fine until the sudden push from Pearl. While she meant well, it was no different than someone trying to grab the steering wheel while driving. His footing faltered and he stumbled into the table with an "Oh!". His grip on Usa-chan went slack, retightened, and Honey took a moment to situate himself. Feeling around, his free hand landing on one of the chairs, Honey gave it a few pats to confirm the shape and then started pulling it away from the table.

Unfortunately, doing that was helping to agitate the mug of water that had been placed in the same area. With a slosh, some of the water spilled over the cup's lip, running towards the edge of the table. Feeling the steam from the water near his hand, Honey froze.

Noticing the water’s spill, Pearl was on it to stop the heated water from touching his skin with a napkin. While it did indeed burn herself from the water seeping through the paper, she didn’t mind. At least he hadn’t been burned and she felt bad for having moved him toward the chair in the first place. Balling up the napkin, she tossed it into the garbage and took her own seat once more. With a light sigh, she pushed a piece of fallen hair behind her ear and set her hands to the table, looking into the mug of water which had since tinted slightly from the tea bag. Once it was tea, she scooped out the tea bag from both their mugs and set them onto a napkin, balling that one up as well. She frowned.

“Sorry Honey,” Pearl blinked to herself, face palmed and reached her hand toward Honey’s to re-tell her words, only in writing—saying ‘Sorry’ onto his palm this time.

'I'm okay.' he spelled back, once he was seated. Taking a second, and moving slower; Honey gingerly felt around the area. This was going to be different than when he had gotten himself something to eat a few evenings ago, but it wouldn't be impossible. He'd just have to be careful about where his hands landed.

Wanting some conversation, Honey spelled after a moment; 'Is that girl still being mean to you?'.

‘Kind of’ she replied onto his palm with a bit of a frown. ‘She’s kind of hard to ignore.’

Leaving her hand she’d been spelling with on the table, she decided that was the best way for her to keep up the communication. With her other hand used to hold her cup of tea, things were working out perfectly—or at least as perfectly as they could be for the time being. She didn’t really like the girl in her class, the one who seemed at a constant with teasing her, but that was to be expected. Bullies weren’t meant to be liked, after all. She sighed softy and took a sip of her tea.

‘I hope you aren’t stuck like this.’ She spelled out again.

'I hope I'm not either. But if I am, I could probably get used to it, eventually.' Moving his hand away once he had finished his statement, Honey felt around for a moment. His fingers grazed something new, and he confirmed that it was a cup. Slowly, since he didn't know how much tea was in it, Honey eased it towards himself. Sniffing the air, he moved the cup a bit more, until it felt close enough to where he could take a drink safely.

Which he did. Returning the cup to the table, Honey returned his hand to Pearl's palm. 'It's good!'

‘I’m glad!’

She smiled, rather pleased that he liked the tea and was happy that communication was working for the time being. The tea did taste good and she was glad to have it, she really needed a calm of nerves with everything that had been overwhelming her lately. Not only did she have a play to practice, but the higher the school grade got the more workload she seemed to get.

‘Are classes hard for you like this?’

'A little. It takes me longer to do my homework, and some of my teachers keep forgetting that I can't hear, but besides that; it's not as hard as I thought.'

Taking another drink of his tea, Honey sighed and resumed the conversation once the cup had been placed back onto the table. 'It's not as easy, either. I'm okay at finger spelling, but sometimes people talk too quickly, or don't spell all the way.'

A pause. 'But most people are okay at it! Which is good. At least they're trying.' Hugging Usa-chan with the arm that was wrapped around the doll, Honey realized he was pretty fortunate; all things considering. Helen Keller didn't have many people to talk to when she was growing up, according to the play; and it took her a while before she understood that things had names.

'Are your classes hard?'

‘They’re hard, but they’re fun. So I guess that’s all that matters, really.’

Pearl was pleased to hear that the people of his classes and whatnot were trying to at least communicate with him and try to make him feel comfortable in his lessons and whatnot. Still, she couldn’t expect that everything would go swimmingly for him, but there was effort and that’s all that mattered, really.

‘I’m glad that people are trying to help you out at least! That’s good!”

'It is. It'd be a lot harder if they didn't.' Honey had no idea how far behind he might be on his work, but trusted his teachers enough.

Drinking more of his tea, Honey stopped talking for a few minutes. It was helping his throat, in addition to tasting good.

'Sometimes things are more fun because they're harder to do.'

‘I guess so!’

She replied into his palm, of the notion for fun things being as such because they are difficult to do. He was right, in part. Sometimes the difficulty was the fun thing about the work offered by teachers and the like. It was interesting to see how to work things out, but there were still a few subjects in school that remained for Pearl in which the harder it got the less amusing it was and simply stayed hard altogether. Like the sciences and the mathematics, Pearl simply didn’t have a brain for numbers and the sciences just altogether confused her. She was lucky to have friends and family who were more than willing to help her out with anything she needed assistance with.

‘As long as you fun find in the hard, that is. Sometimes it’s just hard-hard and that’s not nearly as fun.’

More tea was swallowed, and Honey thought about that before nodding in agreement. 'It's not.' he answered. 'But it can be fun once you've finished it, right? Then it's okay because you know that you can do something!'

Drinking her own tea for a moment, Pearl took some time to process the letters being dictated onto her palm and smiled softly to herself as she set her small tea cup down and nodded, forgetting he couldn’t see it for a moment before she reached her hand to write back onto his in reply again.

‘Yeah, that’s right! Then you know you can get things done the way it needs to be, you learn from the difficulties. That’s what it’s all about, after all.’

She paused in her writing, and then continued once more on his palm. ‘This is kind of a learning experience for you then, isn’t it? It’s hard, but you learn from it.’

Glancing into her cup, she realized there was but a gulp left in her own and as such, Pearl lifted it to her lips to swallow the tea, smiling to herself as she set the cup down. She was certainly more relaxed than she had been when she was in her room talking to him via the computers. Uncertain if it was the tea itself or simply Honey’s company that was calming her nerves, Pearl was glad that she was feeling better, anyway.

‘You’re welcome, Mister Honey! I was glad to help!’
