Fred quietly sat behind her desk, and stared at the computer screen in front of her. She eyes scanned the last paragraph of the report and once she was satisfied it sounded right, she saved the document before sending it off for the rest of her department to read. Leaning back in her chair, Fred laughed when she felt something nudge her leg. She looked under her desk, and raised an eyebrow.
"What's up, Sammy?" she asked.
The Rufus, a bobcat-like creature native to the planet's mainland, looked at his owner with his big green eyes before looking at the middle drawer of her desk. With a small snort, Fred opened the drawer and pulled out a green apple, and handed it to him. Even after a year of having Sammy, it still amazed Fred that she had a space bobcat as a pet. But Sammy, like all rufuses, was extremely gentle and loving.
Fred looked down at Sammy, and smiled as he happily chewed on his apple. There were times when she couldn't believe how fortunate she was. She was living so many people's dream of living and working in the ancient city of Poseidon. Yes, Gate travel through the Milky Way had always been available to everyone on Earth, but Poseidon was home to the best of the best. It was in the middle of the Milky Way, and a hub for all the galaxy's interstellar activity. Plus, it's Gate was the only way to get to its sister city, Atlantis, which was located in the Pegasus galaxy.
When Fred had been asked to join the city's medical team, she knew she had to. It was a chance of a lifetime, and she loved living there. She had met so many different alien races, and people. Fred had been allowed to do research on things other doctors only dream about. In the two years since coming there, she had learned so much about the universe around them.
But even if she weren't there to work, Fred would still love it. Poseidon was a beautiful city, surrounded by a beautiful ocean. The city had shops and a massive library, and there was always something exciting going on.
Suddenly, Fred felt Sammy nudge her leg again. "You're not getting another apple," she told him as she glanced toward the floor. He wasn't looking at her; instead, he was looking out her office door. Fred leaned to the side to see what he was looking at, and when she saw who he was looking at, Fred smiled. Sitting in office, which was right across the lab from hers, was Carson.
Carson Beckett was the most wonderful and handsome man she had ever met. Fred was on the committee who hired him to head the emergency medicine department. When she'd looked over his file, she was sure he was an older man since he had accomplished so much. But Carson was anything but old. Fred had been instantly attracted to him. He had the most beautiful blue eyes and adorable dimples. Plus, he cared about his patients, which was something you rarely saw anymore.
"Do you think we should invite him to lunch?" Fred asked before she even realized what she was saying.
Sammy let out a small meow sound, and tore out of Fred's office. When Fred saw he was going straight toward Carson's office, her eyes widened, and she quickly stood.
"Sammy!" she scolded before she followed him across the lab. The rufus ran into Carson's office, and started to rub against his legs. Fred stopped into the doorway of the office, and gave Carson a sheepish look.
"Sorry," she said with a small blush. Sammy continued to rub against Carson's legs, and looked at Fred before letting out a loud meow. Fred narrowed her eyes at the animal before looking at Carson again. "I, um...Sammy and I were going to head down to the dining hall to get some food. Then we were going to eat on one of the balconies. Do...you want to come with us?"
