Route 2, just south of Viridian Forest
"You've been doing well today," Leaf said to her Gengar, Loki. They had just been in a battle with a local bug catcher. It was a tough battle, and she could tell that he had raised his Scyther well. Loki had managed to defeat the Scyther in the end, though.

Leaf had been doing nothing but battling all day. Viridian Forest was a great meeting place for trainers, both beginning and advanced. She came here often to pick out the strong trainers and battle with them. Sometimes she won, sometimes she lost. Each battle, no matter the outcome, helped her and her Pokemon grow stronger, though.

Today was different, though. She wasn't battling just for the purpose of training. She was trying hard to keep her mind busy. Lately, she had been hearing rumors of sightings of Giovanni, the former boss of Team Rocket.

She hadn't heard about him for years, not since Red defeated him in that fateful gym battle. She wasn't even sure he would remember her. But she knew that he was one of the last people she wanted to run in to.

It had been many years since he had travelled through Kanto, although he had spent so much time just west of the region.
Since his official return to business, he had spent most of his time in Johto, being as that was where his executives had rebuilt the business. However, there were still a number of assets to his business that remained in Kanto.
He had to rebuild the Kanto branch.

Viridian city was his home. The gym may not have been his any longer, but his manor was. Situated somewhere near, but concealed by the forest.
And so that is where he was, within the forest, some distance away, accompanied by two other men, likely grunts from his organization.
They spoke softly, in hushed tones, likely impossible to make out what they were saying.

She had never paid much attention to the manor. She had taken this path many times to get home, but the manor was well-concealed by trees, so it didn't stand out much. However, the men whispering by the manor caught her attention.

Curiosity had taken over common sense. She walked closer to the manor. She then remembered that Loki was still out of his Pokeball. And he was eyeing the men just as she was.

"Loki," she whispered, "I know you probably want to sneak up behind them and play a trick on them, but it's not a good time to do this. I need you to get back in your Pokeball."

The Gengar looked slightly annoyed, but he reluctantly returned.

She crept closer to the manor, being careful not to make any noise. The whispering men were still hidden by shadows, but she could at least understand what they were saying.

She knew she probably shouldn't be spying on them like this. But she couldn't run away.

"I understand it's been a long time..." Giovanni spoke to the men beside him. "But I have managed to negotiate most of the original franchises back into our hands. The Game Corner has completely transferred back into the company, and we have stricken a part-ownership deal with Silph Co., as well as the renewed production of porygon."

He reached into his pocket, pulling out a pair of envelopes.
"I cannot say I trust the postal service with jobs like this, so here's one for each of you. The Game Corner contract, and the Silph Co. contract. I need them delivered as soon as possible."
He handed an envelope to each of the men.

He turned around slightly, looking back into the forest, checking his surroundings, but ultimately finding nothing out of the ordinary..
"It'll be night soon. Try to get them there by morning."

No.

It couldn't be.

She wasn't completely sure. After all, she hadn't seen him for years, not since she was a kid. But his voice was so familiar.

She could run away. That wouldn't work, since she would for sure draw attention to herself. She could continue to hide. Right now, that seemed like the best option. But what if any of the men came this way? She would be spotted, for sure.

She heard a noise, and she swore her heart leaped out of her chest. It was just a wild Pidgey, though. That didn't stop her from panicking, though, and she started to run.

Big mistake.

She tripped. Her body made a loud noise as it hit the ground.

His head quickly turned around as he heard that shuffling sound, thinking for a moment that they had been spotted, though he relaxed again when he saw that it was simply a pidgey.

But then he heard another sound. Something louder. Something unlikely to be a native pokemon.
"Take them now, go!" He snapped at the grunts who quickly dashed away.

He followed the source of the noise, finding some footprints in the dirt, and some trampled grass.
"Who's there?" His hand reached down to his hip hovering over his pokeballs. "Come out, now."

She knew she had screwed up big time. There was absolutely no way she could leave without being noticed. If she left her spot, he would see her for sure. But if she stayed where she was, he would find her.

Her heart was pounding so loud, she could barely hear anything else. Time seemed to move much slower than usual. If there was ever a moment she wished she could turn back time, or just go back in time to tell her past self to pay no attention to the suspicious men by the manor, now was it.

She just wanted to run away. But that wasn't an option. So she reluctantly stood up, now in plain view of the man. She was just who she feared he would be.

"Giovanni..." she muttered under her breath.

He stepped back a little when he saw the figure rise from the grass and bushes, arching an eyebrow at that clothing style. It seemed so very familiar, though something he had not seen for a very long time.
But then, he saw that hat, and the long brown hair beneath it, and eventually, the face that it obscured.

He definitely recognised her.
She was older now, a matured adult rather than the young girl she once was, but it was her.

His hand rested back at his side, no longer reaching for a pokeball.

"So... It's you."

"Yeah... it's me."

Her heart wouldn't stop pounding. This was the moment she had feared ever since she heard the rumors. She was standing face to face with Giovanni Sakaki.

She studied his face. He looked pretty much the same since her time with Team Rocket, save for a few more age lines. But he was still the same tall, imposing figure she had both admired and feared.

But he didn't seem angry. At least, not as much as she thought he would be. To be fair, she had no idea what could possibly be going through his head right now, but he wasn't yelling at her, at least.

"It's been a while," she said, a hint of nervousness in her voice. "How have you been?"

His voice barely raised above a murmur, but his eyes, fixed in a glare, did enough to show just how much rage he was holding back.

"How nice of you to take an interest." He folded his arms across his chest. "I have been just fine. You know, picking up the broken pieces of my company after our defeat. I suppose you wouldn't have known the details of that, considering you abandoned us. Would you?"

She had been wrong. He was pissed. The way he was talking to her... it was just as she feared. He remembered her. He remembered how she had run away from Team Rocket just after Red confronted her.

If she had battled, and defeated, Red, history could be a lot different. The man she was staring at, eyes fixated on her in an angry glare, could be ruling Kanto. Maybe all of Japan. Maybe even all of the world.

But she ran away... and honestly, she was glad she ran away. Except for right now.

Oh no. She felt the all too familiar feeling of tears trying to fight their way out. No, she thought. I can't cry. Not in front of HIM.

"I'm sorry," she said quietly, blinking rapidly. "I did what had to be done."

"What had to be done, of course..." He folded his arms across his chest.
"But just who decided what that should be? Was it you, or those 'friends' of yours?"

If he ever had any kind of faith in her as a Team Rocket member, he had expected all that to be for nothing once she saw the disappointment of her friends.

"But then, I suppose that was why you made such a good grunt. Never were quite able to think for yourself."

"I'm perfectly capable of thinking for myself, thank you," she said through gritted teeth, clenching her fists. How dare he say things like that!

But deep down... was he right? She had joined Team Rocket because she felt unloved. She had quit because she felt unloved.

She wanted to punch him. There was no way she could take him down, though. He was almost a foot taller than she was, not to mention a lot more well built.

"But if I was just a grunt... it wouldn't have made any difference if I had stayed with your gang. You had several others."

"Of course you are. That's why you made such an independent, and mature decision to leave, rather than to just run away in shame, yes?"

He rolled his eyes at her. This wouldn't have been the first time that an employee, former in her case, had pleaded this case to her.

"Just a grunt, hm? Replaceable, yes?" He nodded. "Is that how you thought of yourself? You could have been something more, something greater. But then, did you truly want that?" He paused briefly, a smirk crossing his face, knowing that he was playing on her insecurities. "Or is that all that you wanted? To belong somewhere. Just enough to be part of something greater than yourself?"

She could tell that he was trying to break her down. And it was working. She couldn't let him know that, though. She couldn't let him win.

"I've done a lot of great things since I left Team Rocket," she informed him. "If I was still working for you, I never would have gotten 8 gym badges. I wouldn't be a regular challenger of the Pokemon League."

She began to reach for her bad to show him her badge collection, but ultimately decided against it. He would probably remind her of her first time challenging the Viridian Gym, back when he was the gym leader. The most humiliating defeat she had ever faced, even now.

"Yes, I did run away," she continued, "but would you have let me walk up to you and say to your face that I was leaving?"

"And if you were still working for me, you could have been in a much higher position. You always did have the potential." He smirked. "Why be a challenger in the pokemon league, when you could have torn them apart?"

He sighed, shaking his head, pacing around her. "You could have had so much more. But you just ran away. And maybe I would have let you go. But we'll never know, will we? I'm sure I would have been a lot less angry about it."

He laughed. "Still, you mentioned 8 badges, yes? Finally scraped together a team to win yourself that badge that you couldn't get from me?"

"For your information," she replied, watching his movements closely as he paced around her, "I didn't 'scrape together' my team. They're the best partners anyone could ask for."

Even if she was gonna cry before, the tears she had been keeping inside had now been replaced with boiling anger. No one ever insulted her Pokemon. Ever.

"And you're right. I could have done great things with you." She laughed nervously. "Maybe I could have been one of your executives. Your second in command, even. But I wouldn't have been happy."

"Yes, yes. Of course they are." He sighed, rolling his eyes as he circled her. "They always say that."

He stopped his pacing, not particularly moved by her defending her pokemon. "Though, I suppose you had the advantage of facing whoever it was that replaced me. They mustn't have had to be all that strong to be victorious."
He laughed, shaking his head.

"I do wonder though... If you turned down the possibility to have the very world at your feet, then just what is it that would make you happy?"

"Being surrounded by the Pokemon and people that love me makes me happy," she told him. "I don't assume you know what that feels like."

She wanted to play on his insecurities, just as he was doing to her, but she honestly didn't know very much about this man. Plus, he seemed so self-confidant.

"Does anyone love you? Could anyone possibly love a man like you?"

"Now see? That us the difference between us. One of many, I'm sure." he gave her a smug look, pacing away again. "You seek to find your happiness in the approval of others. Whether they like, or love you."

He saw that she was trying to use his own methods against him. However, he was long past the point where he cared about others opinions.

"I, however, find my happiness within myself. I do not need others to validate myself."

He tucked his hands into his pockets as he came to a stop, his posture confident and strong.
"And 'love', is the greatest waste of them all. It is not something that I need."

"I'm honestly not surprised you would say something like that," she said, crossing her arms over her chest. She looked up at his face, staring at his confident expression.

"You know why? I don't know much about you, but I do know that you're selfish. You only care about yourself."

She placed her arms by her side again, feeling her fists grow tight.

"You're unable to love because you're so focused on yourself!" she said harshly.

"Yes." He nodded firmly. His face fixing into a stoic mask, though there was something in the narrowing of his eyes that gave the slightest impression that he was hiding something.

"Care only for yourself, and no-one shall let you down. No-one will backstab you, no-one will double cross you." He circled around her. "And abandonment means little."

"You know," she said, staring into his eyes, her voice suddenly calm, "I was like you once."

Yes, talking on and on about love to him was probably pointless. But there was that small chance that maybe he had loved in the past and had his heart broken.

"I had no one. My friends had abandoned me to chase their dreams. I let no one into my life, because I was afraid of being let down again. And I wasn't. I was never heartbroken," she sighed, "but I was never happy, either."

"Is that so?" He tilted his head, waiting for her to surprise him with some great revelation. Though, it was something that never came.

"Well, isn't that just a shame?" He gave a forced, rather condescending looking smile. "For you, I mean. Because this life I have carved out for myself? I like it. I am happy like this. The master of my own destiny... And, those of so many others. And that is the way it's going to stay."

"The two of us are very different, then."

She glanced around. It was now late twilight, and whatever bit of sun that was left in the sky cast long shadows of trees on the ground.

"But like you," she said, crossing her arms, a hint of doubt in her voice, "I'm perfectly happy just the way I am. I have everything I need... and I'm happy with the choices I've made in the past."

"Obviously." He stated flatly, drumming his fingers against his arm.

"Well... Good for you. If you had to give in to your cowardice, and run away from us to do so, then so be it. But..." His voice suddenly dropped, taking on a more dangerous edge. "I would advise you not to come anywhere near us again. For any reason. You get in my way, and I will take great pleasure in removing you as an obstacle."

She reached into her bag and got out her Pidgeot's Pokeball. She released the large bird and mounted it, ready to fly home.

"Good night," she said with a hint of bitterness.
