Thanks for your feedback everyone. While some of it was pretty upsetting, it was all useful information to have and I respect the right to express how you really feel. It seems like there has been a lot of miscommunication, and I'd like to apologize for my part in that. It was never my intent to sabotage any characters; I tried a rolls system that turned out to be clunky, and meant no personal insults against any players, so I am also sorry that my actions came across as such. At this point in time I don't have the desire to continue moderating Panem Forever, and so we will be closing our doors on Tuesday after the trains depart. I'm sorry for anyone who is let down by that decision, too.

Best of luck in all your future RP endeavors,
Nell

I'm sorry to see the game end because there was a lot of amazing writing. I don't think I can be like Elsa and let it go. Even though the game will be closing officially, that doesn't mean we have to stop writing our characters -- please let me know if you'd be interested in being involved in an unofficial, adult-focused group PSL! You can reach me by email/gchat/aim/semaphore/carrier pigeon/smoke signal/etc.

Hey, guys! This is Loren. I know everyone is anxious about the end/future of the game, and Nell and I will get back to you with a more comprehensive answer as soon as we've had a chance to talk!

In the meantime, a few people have expressed some confusion about the rolls spreadsheet, so I just wanted to clarify something. The rolls done at the beginning of week 2 determined who survived until the last day in the arena. The rolls done at the beginning of week 3 determined the winner.

The reason for the surprise activity check at the beginning of week 3 was because the first, second, and third place tributes wound up being within only a few points of each other with rolls alone. We thought it would help to give one last opportunity to influence the victor, but in the end, all this wound up doing was make the points split even closer. So uh... good thing we didn't get a tie eight years too early?

I hope that helps clear up the outcome of the Games!

[info]modsofpanem

Congratulations to Dea and Flint, and my condolences to anyone who was sad when their tribute passed. ♥ You all wrote beautifully (adults too!) and I could not be prouder or more thankful that everyone came to play! The Google Spreadsheet rubric is updated with all rolls, and if anyone has suspicions or doubts about them I would be happy to upload the screencapture videos of me toggling between random.org and the spreadsheet, too.

The next few days are free days for Victors to do as they please within the Capitol. On Monday night, all Victors and Staff must attend the Crowning of their new Victor (only Silas, Lichen, and Flint are required to actively participate, though recognition will be made for Hyperion and John as well). Throughout the day Tuesday, trains will be departing (reverse order from how they arrived, save for District Seven who will depart last). If you have any questions just ask! :)

OOCly, we have a Round 1 Exit Survey -- if you guys could fill this out by 9pm EDT Monday night, that would be great, and then we can announce on Tuesday what we want to do next; have a week or two wrap up, or an interim before another round. Thank you so much for all that you guys have done to make the game great!

[info]modsofpanem

Hi guys! This post has two purposes: Activity Check for the remaining tributes (9pm EDT Monday night!), and, to prep for our short exit survey, which will help determine if we go for another round or not, plus what changes we need to make, if any. If you have any questions that you would like to see asked on the survey, let us know here please, and we will add them on if they aren't there already. ♥ A link to this survey will go up after the finale is posted on Wednesday, then we'll have a few days of wrapping up the 66th Games ICly (hospital time, crowning ceremonies, exit interviews, Victors Gone Wild, what have you :P) during which we'll be assessing survey responses, and then we'll address what will happen next in time for the train journeys home.

Comments on this entry are screened, both to heighten suspense for the finale, and to allow for anonymity amongst your peers when it comes to survey questions.

Hanging from one of the burned trees in the area between the fort and Battery Bartlett is a one-person hammock tent, found by KEVIN (1pt Tools/Weapons).

REEF discovers a spool of 50 yards of 100lb monofilament line (1pt Tools/Weapons).

The Concessions Stand is sending out delicious smells, and GEMMA finds two cheeseburgers + fries (1pt Energy).

FLINT spies an orange buoy floating off the north shore; inside is a tin of burn paste, bandages, and a wrap (1pt Health).

Reminder to living tributes to get your activity in by 9pm EDT tonight, and to fill out the google survey please! ♥ Adults, if you did a plot slot for sponsor bucks this week, could you drop us a link on the activity post too please so we can distribute your cash? Thank you in advance!

Also, we have now reached the Final Eight, so the families of living tributes will have interview crews in each of their districts, persistently badgering and interviewing and filming their families until your tribute succumbs to their end. If you wish to write some of that out and post it, you're welcome to do so! :)

And the big important news: at 7am on Day 14 (Saturday), there will be seven lightning strikes, but no rain. This time, they will be hitting the island instead of the water nearby. One strike will light the trees next to the powderhouse on fire, and it is going to burn baby burn. Once the fire reaches the powderhouse (approximately 7:20am) there is going to be a large, dramatic, action movie type explosion. Embers will blow southeast, lighting the brush atop the fort on fire. This fire will continue to burn (in a rather unnatural fashion) throughout the day and night; there will be the smell of smoke in the air anywhere on the island, and if you are in the southeastern part of the island, atop the fort or in the area beyond, your character will be in danger of getting caught in the fire. This post has screened comments: If you want your character to be injured or die in this explosion/fire, rather than waiting for dropbox rolls/fights/etc. to be sent out Saturday afternoon, give us a comment here to let us know (specify injury/death please) you'd like your character to go out with a literal bang. I'm sorry that most of you are going to be croaking in the next few days - it has been a pleasure to read & write with all of you over the last couple of weeks! ♥

Arena Explorations
This is a new thing; it's a hybrid plot-slot/choose your own adventure novel (it counts as a plot slot, it's just a fancy new version I'm testing out). If you are one of the first five tributes to comment below, please fill out this form. It comes in two parts; after filling out part one, you should get an email within 5 minutes that includes a link to your customized part two. This will give you the basic scenic structure for a narrative/log, which you can begin to write while I sleep for a few hours. Once I wake up I will check for your responses to part two, let you know what time of day this is going down (in case two of you choose the same scenario), give rolls if needed, and tell you what reward your character picks up during the scene.

Nope, the script was overloaded by the testing I did, and Google thought I was sending out spam emails. :| Regular plot slots coming to this space in 10 mins. *goes to cry over 3 days hard work for nothing*

ZEAL successfully hunts a squirrel (+1 Energy).

REEF finds a painkilling plant appropriate to their needs and brews a tea (+1 Health).

ACHILLES is able to break into one of the southern portapotties; inside is a composting toilet with ten squares of toilet paper left on a roll, and a small tank of water that comes out of a small, spigot type faucet, a la airplane restrooms (+1 Energy for the water).

GEMMA finds a broken bottle on the beach, just the right size and sharpness for a hobo knife (+1 Tools/Weapons).

Adult Plot Slots
PROW and BRUTUS are the new additions featured in this year's edition of Hunger Games: Arena Apocalypse, a virtual reality video game which pits victors against victors (in their primes, directly after their own wins), in arenas which can be designed by the players. As a result, sponsorship upticks a bit for each of their districts (25 sponsor bucks each). This plot slot was not completed last week, so we're recycling the idea this week.

ADULT C is the emcee of the Capitol's fireworks show on Night 12... their co-host is the much beloved (and vastly more popular) ஐ The Cat (25 sponsor bucks). This plot slot was not completed last week, so we're recycling the idea this week.

BLIGHT is approached by a famous tattoo artist, wanting to tattoo a lightning storm across their back for a new advertisement of their tattoo parlor. (25 sponsor bucks)

Activity Check
Activity for surviving tributes is due by 9pm EDT Friday night, so that I can do rolls and get your dropboxes out Saturday! ♥

And your Google Survey for Week 3! :)

Set atop the tables in the southern picnic area are six single-serving bottles of iced tea - and six paper party hats! Rose, going to invite anyone to your tea party (1pt Energy)?

Was it a shipwreck, or something more sinister? While braving the north shore, Flint finds a hiking boot and a jacket that look as though they were a part of a tribute's outfit (1pt Tools).

Sperry finds a small aloe plant amidst the shrubbery nearby Battery Plunkett (1pt Health).

Out of desperation, Kevin drinks all of the water that pooled on the playground equipment after hiding inside the miniature fort during one of the night storms (1pt Energy).

Adult Plot Slots

In exchange for his sponsoring their tribute, Rufus Allrose demands to be locked up with GEO overnight in a mock-up of the arena's Guardhouse he's had made (hanky panky is not required, but you do have to spend the whole night in jail with this guy, for 25 Sponsor Bucks).

ROAN is asked to be in the commercial for a new brand of luxury bottled water that comes directly from the heavens (secret: it's just rain), but after being drenched on an air-conditioned set all day, immediately develops a cold (25 Sponsor Bucks).

Scheming social climber Lavinia Coldcreek has been blackballed from all of this year's most glamorous parties (the rumors on why vary wildly), but if Lyme will bring her as their surprise guest to Titania Blossom's Midway Party (causing quite a scene), she'll sponsor your tribute (25 Sponsor Bucks).

ADULT D can have free plastic surgery (procedure of your choice) and will even receive a stipend from late-night-infomercialist Doctor Octavian - or Doc Ock as he's better known - so long as you agree to appear with before and after photos in his upcoming advertisements (25 Sponsor Bucks).

Titania Blossom's annual party is always held once half the tributes have died. It's a staple of the Hunger Games experience and seems to have been around for at least thirty years, even if Titania is only 32 herself (is she really?). The party post will happen once we're officially midway, and any victors who write a log within said post (not IC/OOC arrivals, outfits, or skimmed highlights of greetings/chatter, but an actual conversation/interaction of 150+ words per person) will get 10 Sponsor Bucks if they comment below with a link (1 per character is all that will count for points, but go hog wild).

Hey, folks! It's Loren. All dropbox notifications for Week 2 should be out by now. If there are any issues, please let us know! I am really excited for things to heat up this week because I'm secretly a Capitolite.

EDIT: And the Sponsor Store is now open again!

In the meantime, here's how things are going with the viewers!

[info]roan

I live! Barely.

I literally just finished my last final, so I'm finally able to play again, but I feel like I've missed a ton of bonding experiences. I'd like to maybe arrange some lines/friendships or write with some of you to build some relationships with poor lonely Roan here.

Any takers?

Hey folks, if you can help share the load and submit some ideas for plotslots via dropbox, I would be appreciative! Thank you in advance! :D

ZEAL ventures down to the gazebo and discovers a picnic basket stocked with bread, cheese, fruits, and salami (1pt energy).

The smell of baking bread is in the air on the morning of Day 6. If you're brave enough to steal into the Bakery, GEMMA will be rewarded with a tray of six hot, sticky cinnamon rolls (1pt energy).

While exploring the rocky, dilapidated sea wall to the east REEF discovers a three pack of skyrocket fireworks (1pt tools/weapons).

Tucked in a closet inside one of the Front III casemates is a catcher's mask and chestpad (1pt tools/weapons); regardless of whether or not it fits, BAILEY has some armor to work with!

The hospital is mostly bare, stripped of beds and cabinets and supplies, but on Day 6, sitting in the windowsill is a single-use syringe of morphling, to be found by COBALT (1pt health).

Washed up on the beach (location your choice) is a large bottle with a literal message inside: Use Barden Brand Antiseptic: Beat the Burn With Barden! Happily for ROSE, a tube of antiseptic cream is included as well (1pt health).

ORPAH and ADULT D are part of the ribbon cutting for the new wing of the Hunger Games museum, which features mannequins dressed in the arena tribute outfits (25 sponsor bucks each).

ADULT E is the emcee of the Capitol's fireworks show on Night 6... their co-host is the much beloved (and vastly more popular) ஐ The Cat (25 sponsor bucks).

Tribute Activity Check-In

Hi guys! :D If you have a living tribute, please comment to this entry (by Friday night, 9pm EDT; I'll try to allow for stragglers for a couple hours but if you can aim for then, that would be great) with links to this week's activity, so that we can tally your points in the tribute rubric for the upcoming Week Two.

As a reminder: Narratives are 5pts, Logs are 10pts, the max for tributes is 30pts. Any instance of writing 150+ words counts, so bloodbath fights/running counts too, so long as it is long enough. Adults contribute with 5pts for interactions (logs/network comment wars), with a 10pt max. For Points Gathered, please link to the parachute/log/narrative that mentions the point you are gaining, and what kind of point it is please. You can comment and then come back to comment if you get more links over the next day or so, no need to do it all in one! :)

Lastly, there's another (shorter!) Google Survey here, to list your current rolls/supplies/etc. and your preferred fights/deaths.

THANK YOU! ♥

[info]modsofpanem

Hi guys! Let's make this a placeholder-filling post in the OOC, and I'll link it on the resources page. :D If you want to be notified when placeholders are filled, click on the little pin on this entry, and subscribe yourself to when people comment on this entry. Then, whenever anyone has filled a placeholder, they can just comment below and it will alert everyone who is interested, without having daily posts about placeholders - no one did anything wrong, just cutting down on clutter! ♥

[info]modsofpanem

Okay... I have spent the last few days trying to figure out a rolls system that operates with both realism and fairness, with these four conditions:
  1. Emphasizes activity but also includes realistic factors, such as weapons, supplies, food/water, fights/injuries, and luck.
  2. Allows for tributes to use what they have to realistically beget more (i.e. a tarp collects rain, or twine can be used to snare a squirrel).
  3. Utilizes a sponsor store which has gifts appropriate to a tribute's needs that will benefit them with relative equality, and
  4. Allows for plot slots to include found items, thefts, fights, and other experiences with relative equality.

For me, this has become a Kobayashi Maru (if you see an elegant solution, I beg you to let me know). I want all things to be fair, I want you each to have an even shot of winning, I want you to get the chance to play out the things that make you happiest. But then today, either my brain imploded or I had an epiphany (possibly both), and have come to you to say that The Hunger Games are always unfair; the poor are reaped more often, tributes get unequal supply levels, even the victor has a potentially miserable eight years ahead of them.

So, I solemnly pledge to continue: being honest with my rolls, not actively working for or against any individual tribute(s) including my own, and doing my best to give you the death you choose for your tributes. I will not play Gamemaker and work to advantage the most 'entertaining' tributes or to make the grandest show. But, some things will still be a little bit unfair: bread is cheaper than a spear, Career districts will have larger bank accounts, you may not get the plot slot that you wanted most, or a kill, or to survive until the finale. This does not mean you've done anything wrong, or that I dislike you. ♥ You guys are terrific, and I'm happy that you're all here! With all of that said, let me try to answer some of the questions that have been stumping me the last few days. I've tried to keep in mind realism and fairness to the best of my ability!

How can I improve my tribute's rolls?
There are seven possible points on the table for any tribute.
  • Sponsor gifts can provide up to 1 point in each category (weapons/tools, health, energy), for a max total of 3 points. Week by week, the bankrolls, items, costs, and values will be adjusted. Please send reasonably appropriate gifts when possible (you may only be able to afford painkillers and that's okay, but burn cream cannot help a broken limb).
  • We will grant up to 1 point in each category (max of 3 points) via tribute ingenuity. Use what you have to gain something new (a tarp to collect rain or bottle + rope to get water out of the slowly-filling cistern, twine to make a snare that catches a squirrel or a net to catch a bird, etc.). Request these via the dropbox and then include mention of the action in a log/narrative; if you've done it already, dropbox us to let us know, please! :)
  • 1 point via finding an item in a plot slot. This is where you can get items like a patch of wild carrots, a key, a knife -- essentially, something for nothing.

If my tribute's rolls decrease next week, how does this happen ICly?
Food and water get consumed so that one's easy peasy. If your health goes down, you'll have a fight, fall in a trap, meet a mutt, etc. If your tools/weapons roll goes down there's a few options (you will have a chance to have some influence over what tools/weapons are lost in the weekly poll):
  • Thieves! If yours goes down and someone else's goes up, we may dropbox you a log of stealing supplies. Mutts can also steal (Eagle swoops down and nabs your unattended knife, WTF, EAGLE?!)
  • Some supplies can get used up if they're made into traps, snares, kindling, etc.
  • Breakages can occur; a bow/spear can snap in two, a metal blade can shatter if you miss a target and hit the granite fort, etc.
  • Misplacement is not likely, but stuff can get lost/vanish if it needs to.

Can we write our own logs for sponsorship?
Yes, you can write whatever you want! But they won't have a monetary reward beyond what you already have in your bankroll.

What happened to Capitolite characters who are sponsors?
No one applied for them, so we got rid of 'em.

You missed my question!
Ask it again please, I tried to keep tabs but may have forgotten something.

Thank you for your patience while I tried to figure this all out! This rolls system may need some overhauling or to just be scrapped; we'll assess that at the end of the round with a survey, and in the mean time we'll roll with the (possibly literal) punches and see how it goes.

It was pointed out to me that there's issues with how the plot slots and sponsor store are being valued/scored. Is there anyone who's really good with maths who can help me sort this out? >.< If you think you can, could you please email me? Values for plot slots are going to be determined once I can get this sorted out, but regardless, they count toward activity. ♥
