Who: Stan and Megan and OPEN
What: "Courting" in the bubble
Where: Hufflepuff commonroom
When: Evening of New Year's Day

Stan jittered nervously outside the entrance to Hufflepuff. He wearing his good robe, the he'd worn to Hogwarts on the night of the ball and clutching a bouquet of red tulips. He was as ready as he'd ever be.

Millicent had been right- if he was going to get Megan back, he couldn't hide. Megan might have said she didn't want him to act "stupid," but it was the showy stuff that was winning him a chance...even if the idea of seeing her friends again made him nauseated with nerves.

Swallowing, and straightening his back, Stan knocked on the door.

Megan was curled up by the fireplace nibbling on some sweets and reading a book she borrowed from Wayne. When a fifth year informed her that there was a tall bloke at the door looking for her, Megan put her book down and walked out of the common room and smiled lightly when she saw Stan. "Flowers? For me?" Megan leaned up and pecked Stan's cheek.

"What's the occasion?"

The kiss made him grin; he felt silly for getting so excited about a peck on the cheek, but still!

He held them out. "Red tulips," he informed her, serious through the grin. "I'm announcing my intentions. And, you know-" Stan shrugged sheepishly. "-I wanted to see you."

"What intention might those be," she asked and took the flowers, smelling them with a big smile on her face. She knew she should be cross with Stan, but he brought her flowers and apparently that was enough to make her all weak in the knees.

"I like when you want to see me. Do you want to walk around for awhile?"

Stan shifted about awkwardly. He wasn't so amazing at transfiguration that he was confident he got the smell right for the tulips. Hopefully they were close enough. "Well, brought red tulips, didn't I?" he pointed out. Stan had grown up in a wizarding home in a wizarding community and there were things he took for granted. "I...erm... declare love?"

With a bashful smile, Stan put his arm out in the traditional let me escort you gesture. It was danged good to see her happy.

"You did! I love them." Megan held them close to her chest and slipped her arm through Stan's. "And I love you, but you know that." Rats. She was supposed to be making this hard on him. She didn't want it to be easy. But he was so cute and she had missed him so much. Plus Megan was never any good at staying angry at the people she loved.

"Let's walk by the astronomy tower," she suggest and leaned into him slightly.

It was almost like the old days, Stan decided. Almost like those first weird and wonderful days when this beautiful lady decided to befriend him for no reason. And she loved him!

"So, what do Hufflepuffs do on New Years Eve," he asked conversationally. "All hidden away down there in your... burrow." Stan gave her a teasing smile.

"Not much. Sally isn't around.. I don't know where she is. And everyone sort of did their own thing. I stay in bed and read, mostly." Megan was hyper and outgoing, sure.. but she wasn't one to party. She liked quiet nights with the people she cared about. And since she and Stan weren't on great terms she chose to stay in bed.

"What did you do?"

Stan looked surprised at Megan. She was so well loved, he figured she would have spent New Years with her friends. "I figured I'd be pushing it to show up on New Years Eve," he admitted.

"Some of the Slytherins are alright. There was a lot of drinking going on. A lot of guys playing the whose-is-bigger game. Dunno." Honestly, he would rather have been with Meg and a bottle of something bubbly back in their room, but he'd had worse New Years. Lots worse.

"Some day I should bring you to a family New Years," he added with a smile. "We can use the wrong forks and play tag in the back garden."

"It would've been pushing it. Thanks for going slow with all this, you know? I don't... I don't want to feel like a jerk for trying to take our time and make you wait." Megan looked up at Stan and gave him a small smile. "I want to make sure we're good. Like, really good, you know?"

Megan laughed lightly. "I never can remember which fork is the right one. I always use the same one over and over again. Does your family really care about forks?"

Stan resettled Meg's arm with his, enjoying the fact that she let him. "No, this is good. This is... this is probably what I should have done in the first place, except I have no clue what I'm doing." He put his other hand over hers, possessive and affectionate.

"My family cares about forks," he informed her with mock-solemnity. "They care about many things which are very, very stupid. I say we show up with no shoes and get all the kids hyper on chocolate frogs."

"I'm not going to fit in at all, am I?" That worried Megan a bit. They already had problems with her sister and she didn't want his family to dislike her. "What are they going to say about you bringing me home? I mean.. if you want to bring me home and if we ever get out of here."

He gave her a funny look. "Sure, I'll bring you home." Assuming Meg forgave him, they were planning on forever, as best as Stan could see. "It's not like I fit in there very well. It'll be fine, Meg. I love you." He gave her a friendly hip-bump, gently in deference to her recent illness and weight loss.

"And what, you really think your family will be thrilled to have me?" Stan tried to say it lightly, like it didn't matter one way or another. Truth was, Gwen had shown Meg's family could make it hard, but he was more than willing to keep the hut-on-a-sandy-beach plan open.

"My whole family isn't like Gwen," she pointed out. "My dad is pretty laid back and my brother is quiet. They aren't all going to jump you and beat you up. I promise."

She fell quiet for a moment. It had been so easy to get caught up in how she felt about Stan and all her fantasies and dreams for their life together. She never really stopped to think about reality. "It might help if you had a job though. Like.. once we get out of here. I don't think my parents would be too happy if I wanted to be serious with a bloke without a job." And they really wouldn't let me marry one without a good job either.

While it was good to know not every single person in Meg's family was like Gwenog, Stan didn't really feel all that comforted. It was a little too real for him to make jokes about not all, huh?

As for jobs..."I'd been working for years," he defended, quietly. "I'd been. Wasn't a posh job, I suppose, but-" Stan turned a little to look at her. "So all that stuff about, you know, us and the brooms and the tent, was that all just dream talk?"

Megan slowed to a stop and frowned. That had all been her idea and while she still wanted to live on a beach in the sun with Stan.. well it wasn't very practical, was it?

"No," she said slowly. "I mean.. yes it was. It's a dream to live on a beach, isn't it? And what if we fall apart again? What if we leave England and fall apart and then we both left our lives behind and it doesn't work out?"

There were different kinds of hurt, Stan decided. Having your arm bashed, that was fast and sharp. So was getting into it, yelling with your girl, though in a different way.

This hurt in a different way, old and familiar. It was the sort of hurt that crept up on you. Not quite good enough it said. It was ignorable, mostly, but it never really went away.

"No, it was never none too practical," Stan admitted. "But I... I didn't think that mattered, not really." I didn't count on you planning our break up.

"I don't.. I don't know how to do this," she admitted quietly. "Talk about things. I usually just feel things and go with that, but that got us into trouble, didn't it? I don't want us to get into trouble again." That was smart of her! All Megan was trying to do was go slow and make sure that they were good together. Maybe it was better if they got to know each other a lot more before flying off to Brazil.

Sighing, Stan squeezes her arm again. "I'm not doing very well at this going slow thing, am I? Our first conversation out and were already talking about meeting the family and where are we going to live for the rest of our lives." He gave her a rueful look.

"It's just... a lot of the slow stuff, I guess we already know. I know how you like your breakfast, and how many older brothers and sisters you have, and what classes you're taking, and the why your breath always smells minty." He raised his eyebrows and shrugged expansively. "I am totally clueless what we're supposed to be doing here."

Our lives. He still thought about them being together for a long, long time. That made Megan's stomach do the nicest little flip. "But.. I mean.. we went so fast! I didn't think it felt wrong though. Not until things fell apart like they did. I just don't want that to happen again. I love you. I want to be with you."

Megan turned to face Stan and leaned up to kiss him lightly on the lips. "How about we just.. don't share a room for awhile. And we try to keep talks about the future to a minimum?"

"And I love you." He smiled against the kiss. "Can't say that's what I want to do, but that would kind of go with the whole taking it slow thing. Told you you were the smart one in this relationship."

Slowly, carefully, he pulled Megan into his arms for a hug. "We'll get through this, Meg." Then, stepping back, he shrugged. "Childhood memory. Go."

"Well what do you want to do?" Megan wrapped her arms around Stan, holding the tulips behind his back.

Childhood memory? There were so many! "I brought a duck home once. I liked it at the pond and I wasn't good with my magic yet so I made it follow me all the way home in the air. My Dad laughed until he cried and my Mum was furious."

Blushing a little, Stan ran a hand up her spine a little. "I'm trying to be a gentleman, Meg. The room can wait."

Stan grinned at the image of Megan and the duck. It suited her. There was often something a little telling about wild magic. "I don't remember my first magic. My father says I was climbing the walls. Outside. In my pajamas."

Megan smiled and leaned up to give him a quick kiss. "The room will have to wait for awhile still. I don't think we should.. not for awhile."

She tried to picture Stan climbing the walls and giggled. "Trying to reach the stars, were you?"

Ugh. Stan was going to do this right. He was going to this right. That didn't mean he didn't want to take Meg back to their room and shag her rotten all night. Balls!

Stan just grinning back at her. "I swear I don't remember doing that. Maybe I was sleepwalking. Sleep-sticking-to-the-wall. Dunno." He waggled his eyebrows. "At least there were no waterbirds. What did you do with the blasted thing?"

"Put in him the bathtub," she said as though it was the single most obvious thing in the world. "I didn't let my parents get rid of it. Pitched a fit if they tried, but Gwen decided one day she needed a bath and so the duck went away." Megan grinned at the memory. Looking back she didn't blame her sister at all. After all, there was a duck in the bathtub.

"I called her a stupid head and swore to never talk to her again."

Stan didn't even bother holding back his laughter at the thought of little Meg and little Gwenog. He briefly wondered if he could get away with calling her a "stupid head" himself, but quickly thought better of it.

The door to the astronomy tower was just ahead, and he motioned toward it. "We gonna go look at the starts, then?" Not that he were't well aware about the reputation the astronomy tower had, but stars were romantic, right?

Megan raised her eyebrows a bit. "You mean through the mist and the shimmery dome? I think you're trying to find a place to snog me, Stan." Not that she really minded, but Megan wasn't sure if she should let herself fall back into snogging Stan.

Mostly she could stand the idea of getting hurt again and for the first time Megan knew it was a possibility.

Stan flushed scarlet. Yeah, that probably wasn't as smooth as he's intended. "I kind of forgot about the mist," he admitted, feeling rather stupid. "I guess 'Come up and stare at mist' is less romantic?"

In his head, Stan went through the ideas he had about being romantic. He was running out of things he could do here! It was too bad he didn't know more romantic people. Maybe something by candlelight? Too bad the kitchens were locked up...

Megan smiled and leaned in to kiss Stan lightly. "You don't have to try so hard you know. I'm happy just walking around the halls with you. I don't need anything fancy." She loved Stan just as he was and really wasn't the sort of girl to love big romantic gestures. Having him close and happy was enough.

Gently wrapping his arms around Megan, Stan leaned his chin down against the side of her head. "I suppose. I'm trying to make it a proper date is all. Show a little effort. Not like I can take you to the pub, now can I? Or to a band or whatnot?" Can't even invite you back to mine.

He pulled back, grinning. "I'd figure out a way to take you dancing, but you've seen how coordinated I am. I'd probably kick you in the shins."
