Strike Plans for the OTC
OTC is participating in the strike by willfully generating new content, and with your help lots.

Starting today at 4pm EST and continuing on until the end of Friday EST, we are shooting for one new post an hour. (MORE IS OKAY!) They can be on anything, whether it's the strike directly or unrelated. I'd like OTC asylum members on IJ to provide content to keep the striking/boycotting LJers occupied. All posts must be open so that Open ID can be used. Feel free to join and post!

I'm asking OTC members to comment in the posts as much as they can to generate conversation in addition to posting, and to answer questions about IJ and encourage new IJers to post in OTC if they can't answer. As a part of the strike, we are rolling out the welcome mat to help as we can new IJers get oriented to the site.

[info]off_topic_cafe, a discussion asylum that centers around absolutely nothing, except discussion.

Not just questions, not just drama, not just one specific topic, just discussion of whatever the community wants. This discussion could be as intellectual as you want in one post, and could could be a flame fest the next. If any of you remember the old Fidonet BBS was--various threads on every topic imaginable. Each poster sets the tone for the post. If you wanna have a flame war--post that in the post, wanna discuss your thesis seriously, make that clear. Community members will honor that request. At the end of the day though, the point is to generate discussion here in this community. Please keep that in mind when you post.

This is the most ludicrous thing I've ever heard of. If you don't like LJ, don't trust the ownership, don't like their ways of conducting business, take your business elsewhere.

The only thing wrong with this comment is that the commenter felt the need to be anonymous.

S/he/it is perfectly correct: if you feel you can't support SUP, don't. If you're fine providing content for SUP to sell ads on, a "one day strike" accomplishes nothing but making yourself feel better about supporting SUP for the long haul.

It is possible that the commenter simply didn't have an InsaneJournal account and didn't feel like creating one.

Nothing prevents a person without a journal account from adding the name by which they prefer to be identified at the end of their comment.

Perhaps they just didn't see singing as important. That's the reason I've not signed most of the anon comments I've left around the web. Not trying to hide, just not seeing the importance or need to sign.

Neither of us know the intent of the commenter not signing, or even if there was an intent. But, whatever the case, there is nothing "wrong" with posting anonymously.

When leaving a positive comment, or even a neutral one, perhaps.

A negative comment left anonymously is a troll.

it's in the (absurd) hope that they can convince SUP to change their ways and be decent people.

Hey, if it gets more people to understand wtf is going on with them, then I'm all for it.

Why would the announcement that from 22nd March people will continue to provide SUP with content as usual, inspire SUP to change their ways?

It's business as usual.

*shrug* they're trying to show SUP what one days worth of content is, and what they're risking losing.

but yeah. it is kinda... not as effective as a mass exodus would be.

The problem with leaving en masse is the connections you have that are long term and real life. I have friends there that I just don't know how I'd leave behind after all these years, and so no matter what I'll end up with an LJ to keep in touch.

This really is the point... allowing them to imagine what a mass exodus would do... It also sends the message that even with their half-apology earlier, we say what we mean and do what we say we will. Our threats and promises are not idle. In other words, if we next threaten an exodus, or to boycott paying for our accounts, they know people will follow through.

I think this strike is a good thing for users, to me it has nothing to do with LJ. People can come here or other places and really see that there are options out there.

If there are more strikes scheduled I would do them again and I really don't care what you think about my choice of staying here Friday.

Also there is nothing wrong with having a journal on each site.

I concur - I don't really think of it as a strike against LJ, more like a chance to get out for a while and see other people.

This is probably a really obvious question, but could you provide a link to the asylum in question? I'm brand spankin' new to IJ and have no idea what the OTC is.
