"What are you looking at, Potter? You've been staring at me for five minute now. Do you think I'm some statue or perhaps a Christmas decoration that damned Charms teacher put up in the hallway?"
Harry blinked and shook his head. Why had he been staring a Draco? And why was Draco alone in an alcove in the deserted hallway Harry had chosen to take to make his way back to the common room?
"Sorry, Malfoy. Didn't realize I was looking at you. Thought you were just another sappy pink and red decorated white Christmas tree that Peeves put up. I was wondering just how to tear it down."
"So, you're saying I'm pink and pretty?" Draco blew a kiss which floated threw the air.
Harry dodged it and said, "No, I'm saying you're pink and annoying. Everyone knows a Christmas tree is green, but even the first years would know to decorate your bedroom in periwinkle and lavender."
"Are you saying I'm gay?"
"Gay as a silver galleon."
Draco stood up and smirked.
"You're calling me gay and you're the one who stared at me for..what? Fifteen.Twenty minutes?"
"It was five you f-"
"So you admit it!"
Harry only folded his arms at this. "I catch you every morning at breakfast looking my way. Ron seems to think you're scheming to kill me."
"It would be a waste of time."
Harry took a few steps forward until they were inches apart.
"I know you'd love to have your hands around my neck choking me. You'd probably leave me in the girls' bathroom with Moaning Myrtle. What a wonderful death. At least I wouldn't be alone."
Draco grabbed hold of Harry's robes and pulled him slightly upward.
"And you'd love to k-k-"
"Kill you! Damn it!" Harry jerked himself free from Draco's hold. " Why didn't you just go head and say it?"
Draco began walking away, but Harry grabbed his arm.
"Leave me alone, Potter!"
"What were you going to say?"
"Nothing. Now let go!"
"Tell me you fucking bastard!"
"Fine!" Draco sighed. "I was going to say that you wanted to-"
Draco never got to tell what he was going to say. The two were caught by Professor McGonagall and were given detention for "disrupting the whole entire school" as she had put it. Apparently their conversation had been very loud and could be heard down several corridors.
"I have some important business with the Headmaster, but that does not mean your detention ends on a short notice," Professor McGonagal said. "You two are to remain in your seats until eight o'clock like the letters I sent you this morning said."
The woman walked briskly out of the room. Draco looked behind him and smirked. Harry was instantly hit with a wad of parchment.
"What do you want?"
"Me? Are you going to torcher me and use me as some puppet as entertainment for your friends, if you can really call them friends."
"My friend are real friends. Not some mudblood and a stupid redhead who can't even hold his temper. You could have been my friend you know. You probably would have been in my house as well, Mr. Gryffindor."
Harry"What do you know about the Sorting Hat?"
Draco threw another wad of parchment, this time at a statue on Professor McGonagall's desk. "What about that flimsy hat?"
"You just said I would have done well in Slytherin. The only people and. things that know that are Dumbledore and the Sorting Hat."
Draco raised an eyebrow. "You could have been a Slytherin?"
"Oh." Draco got up from his desk and sat in the one behind Harry's.
"Why didn't you then?"
"Because of you."
Draco frowned. "I seem to have that effect on everybody."
They sat there in silence for a few minutes until Harry said, "What were you going to tell me before Professor McGonagall came by?"
Draco's face became red, which seemed odd for him, and it stood out exceptionally with his pale complexion and blond hair.
"What was it?" Harry demanded.
Draco mumbled something.
"I said the word `kiss' damn it, Potter!"
Harry sat there wide-eyed. Draco's face was burning and he just knew that Harry would go off telling everyone that he was gay and that he liked Harry of all people. But Harry didn't say anything or did anything for a long while.
Draco had his eyes closed when a quick grab at his robes had his face right in front of Harry's.
"I think you remember this from earlier, Malfoy," Harry whispered. Before Harry could move Draco kissed his lips lightly. Harry smiled and kissed in return, making Draco feel special once in his life. He pulled Harry closer, but was pushed back hard.
"Professor McGonagall!" Harry whispered. There was a loud clicking of high heels in the hallway.
Draco raced to his desk across the room and sat down quickly just in time as the door knob turned.
"Draco, stay for Christmas holiday."
"I can't. Mother would be worried."
"Couldn't you make up some excuse? Say that you friends are staying and that you want to stay, too."
Draco kissed Harry's forehead and let himself be held closer. He looked around him. It was a secret bedroom that the two had found after raiding the kitchens for Firewhisky one night drunk. It was comfortable and quiet, and was well hidden. There was a fire going and the two were wrapped up in a mess of covers in a four poster bed.
"I suppose I could do that. I don't think she would mind if I said that."
Harry, Ron, and Hermione walked the empty hallways to their common room. Hermione was knitting a hat on the way and was lecturing the two on elf safety when a ball of parchment hit Harry in the head.
"Hey, Potter! Come here for a moment!" Draco had his usual smirk on his face and seemed to be hiding something behind his back.
"Don't go, Harry. He'll probably hex you so badly you won't be able to walk for weeks," Ron said.
"I wonder why he's not at home with his parents," questioned Hermione.
Harry sighed. "You two go on to the common room. I'll meet you there." Ron kept looking back until he had to turn the corner.
"What's behind your back, ferret?"
"Just a pretty, little box, potty. Now hold out your hands or I will hex you where you won't be able to walk for months!"
Harry obeyed and was given a small red box.
"What is it?"
"Do I look like I'm going to tell you? You're either going to have to open it or scry for it."
"I'm like Professor Trelawny; I can't even tell what I'm going to have for breakfast." Harry opened the box expecting some girly ring from Draco, but it was a thin black stone embed in silver, which was hung on a very long silver chain.
"I've got one as well."
"They're love charms, you idiot! You, Boy-Who-Lived-A-Long-Time-Who-Is-Also-A-P
Harry held the charm up to his eye. "Well, yes, in the muggle world, but not here."
"I had them special made so that the charm is long enough it can be hidden in under robes so no one can see them."
"What do they do?"
"They change colors according to our feelings, and if we're willing we can allow the other person know them."
"How do we know them?"
"I don't know! You just do, Potter. You-you feel their feelings inside of you."
Harry put it on and slipped it under his shirt.
"I made sure the chain was thin enough no one could see it if came out of your clothes. "
"You don't always wear the right wizard attire."
"Thank you, ferret."
Draco looked around him and gave Harry a quick kiss.
"Can you tell what my feelings are?"
Harry thought for a moment.
"Malfoy, you bastard.Right in the hallway!" Draco laughed.
"See, these things are useful for more than wondering if you've had a pleasant day," Draco said.
Harry lay is bed awake. He couldn't go to sleep. Ron was snoring in his be across the room. Then he wondered if Draco was awake. Before he could even try sending any type of emotion out the feeling on curiosity came to him. The two played back and forth, and made it out to be like a conversation.
Harry and Draco both remember one thing before they fell asleep that night. And that was "I love you".
