FAQ

FAQ

How do I search past updates? If you're looking for a specific celebrity (or a mod post) check out our memories. If you're looking for appearance specifics or character recommendations, check out the tags in the side bar.

Do I need to tag my entries? Yes, if the required tags have already been created. Most of the general appearance tags are already in use, along with many character tags, but if you need a tag that isn't available, a mod will create it for you at a later date.

How do I tag my entries? Once you've posted your entry, click on the little TAG icon and it'll take you to a page where you can select from all the current community tags. Just click on the one you need. If you need more than one, hold down the Ctrl key while clicking on the ones you need.

What do you mean by 'PB' icon? PB icons are icons made for roleplaying purposes. Generally, they're textless and fairly straight-forward in terms of cropping and design. The emphasis is on the expression or mood, rather than on how many clever brushes and textures you can use. They are not bases and PB icon makers usually ask that you don't modify them without permission. Check the rules of the individual icon makers to see what they allow.

Can I post non-human icons here? Yes, as long as they're directly related to roleplaying. For example, owls or wands for Harry Potter games.

Who do I credit? Please don't credit this community! When you follow the link in a post, it will take you to an icon maker's own community or journal. Usually, they'll have clear rules about how they want credit to be given. If you really can't find the rules, crediting by the icon maker's user name is usually a safe option.

Who can join the community? Everyone! We're not at all elitist - our ideal would actually be to have every PB maker on GJ updating here :) Every member is given automatic access to posting, so you can begin updating straight away. If you're not an icon maker, you're still more than welcome to join - we'd love to have you here.

May I post a request? No, sorry. If you're looking for icons of a particular person, we suggest you check out [info]find_icons. If you don't have any luck there, several of our affiliates are open for requests.

Can I post my icons here, rather than just linking? Sorry, but no. We ask that you simply link to your icons elsewhere.

Can I post links to icons posted on other journaling sites? Of course!

What form should my posts take? For ease of archival and to make things clearer for anyone looking for icons, we ask that you use the following template:

Can I post links to all of the icons I've made so far? No. If you've just joined, we don't mind you updating with sets you've made in the last couple of days, but apart from that, we do ask that you use the community as it's intended - an update community.

Can I post an update of someone else's icons? Only with the explicit permission of the icon maker. We'd prefer makers to post their own updates where at all possible, though.

My icons are friends-locked. Can I still post updates? Sure! What we ask, though, is that you indicate a post is friends-only when posting your link - just a "(friends only)" after the link itself would be perfect.

How many updates can I make in an individual post? We'd prefer you made one post per update, as this is the best option for archival purposes?

How many updates can I make each day? At this point in time, you can make as many posts as you like, as long as there is a different PB update in each post. (In other words, if you make two posts of Daniel Radcliffe icons in one day, we ask that you combine both posts in the one update post.)

How do I show that I've made more icons of a certain person? As long as it's not on the same day, just make a new post. If you've updated your old icon post, instead of making a new one, it's worth indicating in your update post that you've added extra icons to an old post - something along the lines of "Daniel Radcliffe - added 444 icons".

Do you have a minimum number of icons per update? Again, we're not restricting this at the moment. We do, however, ask that you use a bit of common sense. Only one icon? Not really what people are after ;)

Can I affiliate with you? Sure! Just go here and follow the directions on that post.

What if I have a complaint/want to speak to a mod privately? You can find our contact info in this entry.

What if I have a question that isn't answered here?
Just ask in a comment below and we'll get back to you ASAP. If it's something that applies to everyone, we'll edit the FAQ to reflect the answer.

This question is sounds slightly ridiculous in my head, but I suppose that as long as they don't involve long drawn out answers, there are no stupid questions?

Clearly from the asylum name this is for PBs; but are there ever times when sets that are commonly used for RPGs but technically aren't PBs are posted? I'm thinking of babies, owls, parchments, things of that nature. I'm also thinking the answer is no, but asking doesn't hurt.

From memory, I don't think people have posted those kind of sets before, but there's no reason why they wouldn't be okay. I'm not sure how I'd tag them - for those kind of HP-related icons, perhaps a tag like "HP: other images" ?

Maybe one for babies in general and one for animals in general? I can't imagine they're insanely popular subject matter, but a friend of mine asked for owl icons the other day so I made a ton.

Hi there. Question about sets that aren't of humans persay - I do have thi set which I prepared a while back: LINK.

I'm not sure this is the kind of thing this com is for, but I thought I'd ask. PBing a god isn't the easiest thing in the word. Erhem.

I had a talk to my co-mod about it, and we decided that we're going to have to limit things to photos/screen-caps only, because otherwise it's hard to know where to draw the line. Sorry!

That's totally cool. That's what asking is for. <3

I have a maintenance question; when we post an update for a person we've already posted an update for before (namely, I've been iconing a lot of Greek and progressively have more and more icons of the actors), would you like us to take down the old posts, or leave them up?

You can just leave the old posts up and save yourself some effort *g* I periodically go through the memories and delete any that are doubled up (although it's about time I got around to doing that again...) but the posts themselves don't do any harm :)

Fair enough; I just wanted to make sure it wasn't something that created extra work for mods! ♥

No, not at all :) The only thing really is that, if I haven't updated the memories recently, someone looking for icons might find that they look at the same lot twice, and I think they'll live *g*

Hm. I kind of failed with tagging on this post :
http://asylums.insanejournal.com/pb_updates/1101153.html

Can you please help me out and remove the Gandalf tag? It was totally non-intentional.

Sorry. That was a misclick of the epic sort.

It really is, isn't it!

Maybe much, much, much later in his career, we can expect to see Orlando as a new Gandalf-like figure.

I just noticed this yesterday while I was skimming posts for a new PB idea: I accidentally tagged Peter O'Brien as female. I added male tags, but I think only mods can remove tags. It's probably made people wtf for a few months now, but I thought I should let you know so you can fix it :)

Hia!

I saw that you accept owl icons but I wondered about writing/quill icons?

People do sometimes use them in hp rpgs, but I thought I'd make sure before I posted.

Thanks! :)

So, tonight I was surfing for a female pb in her early 20s with brown hair, who's sort of plain. Naturally, this means I had to go WAY back into the female: brown: 20s tag, since most people iconed are fairly lovely, and after hitting 390 posts back, I hit a brick wall. At that point, the "previous 30" link took me to a day-by-day-archive style thing, which is not tag specific. Not sure if it's a weird error, or if there's anything that can even be done, I just thought I would let you guys know that, if you're doing some serious hunting, there seems to be a cut-off point. Cheers!

Hm, that's really annoying! Unfortunately, I'd say it's just a bug with the LJ-clones. I know that friends lists are generally the same, in that you can only go back so far before they go to the archive :(

I'm not sure there's any way to fix it without changing things to a non-tag way of archival, which means a lot more work for everyone concerned.

Yeah, I figured that this was the same sort of issue, but just wanted to go ahead and notify you in case no one else had yet.

The only solution I could think of - and I recognize it's not much of one - would be to potentially divvy up the most popular of tags; either split tags like f: white: brown: 20s into f: white: brown: early 20s/late 20s (though, tbh, they would likely overlap), or to have a f: white: brown: 20s: 2, and make some sort of modpost for all of us icon makers to read, that if there is a second option for a tag, please try to remember to use it.

Or, leave it as it is! :D The only reason I make the suggestion is that, while [info]pb_updates surely is an updates community, most RP'ers I know use it in conjunction with [info]wikicon to find good PBs; and [info]pb_updates is obviously the visual part of the equation, for when you need to look at faces, not just names. I work with [info]wikicon, helping her archive some of the larger journals that were already v. established before she was friended by them (actually, after I finish [info]icondust, yours is next on my list, LOL!); I could talk to her about maybe once I'm done establishing some sort of visual directory in a post there as well, if that doesn't feel like a step on [info]pb_updates's toes?

Gah, I didn't even think of separating out some of the tags! That's a fantastic idea, and I'll start working on it in my free time :)

Feel free to go ahead with doing what you like at [info]wikicon regardless :) I can't speak for Steph, but I tend just to think that if other people want to do something similar, that's cool, because sometimes people want info presented in different ways.

Just think of it this way, you guys are so popular, you just can't contain it all, and need a volume II. ;)

Cool beans. I don't know if Kate will even be interested, or when I'll finish wading through the larger journals, but maybe some day...

On the topic of the "(archived)" tags - do we use these when tagging our new posts, or the originals? :)

Sorry to take so long to get back to you (life is mad, modding is back-burner!) but the original tags, please. I can change it if the other is used, but it's quicker for me if not!
