STRANGE THINGS ARE AFOOT AT THE CIRCLE K
Who: Ron and Lia
What: I think something's following me...
Where: A convenience store not far from Pax
When: Late at night
Warnings: None yet
Notes: Lottery post!

Glancing over his shoulder, Ron increased his pace -- not to a run, he didn't want to draw attention. Why oh why had he walked to that restaurant down near the beach instead of driving? Oh yeah, he'd wanted to impress upon the person he was meeting there -- one of his UCLA Med School connections -- that he was physically fit enough for the rigors of an emergency medicine residency. Not that he'd decided 100% that emergency medicine was what he wanted to pursue instead of urology, but he didn't want to discount any options. That was why he'd walked.

Though whoever -- or whatever -- it was that was following him (and he was certain he was being followed) might not have cared whether he was on foot or in his car. Not if the shadow he'd seen was any indication.

The familiar tower of Pax Letale glowed almost ominously in the night; it was only about a quarter mile away now, yet it seemed unattainable. A cold lump formed in Ron's stomach, and he could feel the adrenaline pumping through his body. Fight or flight. He was scared shitless -- yet something deep inside him was howling for blood, telling him to turn and confront whatever it was before it ate the sun. Ate the sun? That made no sense.

Rounding a corner, Ron saw the fluorescent-lit windows of a convenience store. The parking lot was empty, but it was open, and well-lit, and there would be others inside even if it was just the night clerk. He made a bee-line for it; the chime that announced the door opening sounded like sweet safety. He paused for a moment, took a deep breath, and decided he should pick up some liquor for later, once he was back at his apartment. After a night like this, he was going to need it.

Lia was glad of the Circle K near the building. While most of the time she didn't mind SoCal's urban sprawl, there were times when she missed how physically compact everything was on the East Coast; nothing was ever more than few strides away. Pax was actually uncharacteristically convenient in this way; there was a thriving neighborhood with all sorts of shops and small businesses near to it, which made it feel a little more like home than most other places in Southern California tended to.

She didn't need much; some gum, a bag of chips, and a sixer of beer for Samuel to drink when he came over. Her shoulder was still sore from the strangeness on their date, but after Valentine's Day, everything seemed a little easier to bear - if a little stranger. She was back among the beer, pursing her lips at the limited selection, when she heard the little ring that announced another customer. Something made her look up when she heard it, and she thought she recognized the man who'd come in as he approached the cooler that held the alcoholic beverages.

"Hey," she said with a smile as he drew nearer. "You live in Pax, right?"

The look on Ron's face would have done a deer caught in headlights proud. Blinking, he studied the woman and realized she did look familiar. "Uh, yeah, I do. Sorry," he shook his head with a small smile, "I'm a little distracted." Fighting the urge to look over his shoulder to see if whatever it was that had been following him lingered outside the store, he held out his hand. "Ron Nikesh. I'm up in ten-oh-seven. You probably know my brother Rick -- everybody does..."

((OOC: ZOMG SO SORRY this took so long... ;_; ))
