And So It Begins
Six people between the age of 20 – 30 have become narcoleptic and died in their sleep. Six male, six female. They were all healthy with the exception of one woman being diabetic.
Five of the six people had been seen at the Messena Sleep Clinic for their narcolepsy as in each case it negatively impacted their lives, with job losses and one minor car accident.
Victim:
John Cutter – 24, in college on a football scholarship. Began to show signs of exhaustion, getting worse until he fell asleep the moment he stopped moving. He died six weeks after the onset of noticeable symptoms. First known case and first saw his family doctor on September 8th. Found dead in his bed on October 23.
Grace Martinez- 22. Sales clerk at local strip mall card and candle shop. First saw her doctor on September 14th. Was fired for sleeping on the job before she was found dead in bed by her mother on October 30th.
Heather Moore- 25, LPN at St. Regis Nursing Home on St. Regis Reservation lands. Saw her doctor on October 15th.Found dead in bed by her Husband the morning of November 9th. She was diabetic.
Mike Billings- 30, Mechanic, sought his Tribal medicine circle’s help before being sent to a doctor on October 2nd. Exhaustion first blamed on having a eight month old daughter at home. Found dead in bed by his wife November 4th. Their daughter, Lilah, was found strangled in her crib moments later. Two days later his wife, Maggie, slit her wrists.
Sandra Kildare – 20, Baker and sales clerk at her family’s Bake shop. Saw a doctor on October 31, already sleeping most of the day. Had an appointment at the sleep clinic but was found dead on November 10th.
Carl Thompson- 23, Unemployed. Sought advice from tribal medicine woman, went to doctor on October 28, found dead by neighbor on November 13, but DOD was given as November 11.
Local paper, Messena Messenger, started to notice and published a story on the Sleeping Sickness.
