Doctor George Valasquez was not happy. In fact he stalked through the halls, dress shoes clicking against the linolium, looking for any excuse to strike out and share his unhappiness. It appeared as if the staff were carefully avoiding him or studiously busy when he passed by.
Henry Albright saw him coming and the already nervous enough doctor's eyes grew big before he ducked into a study room. As Dr. Valasquez passed the doorway he looked inside to see Albright studiously looking at the monitor of the EEG still attached to an overnight study patient. George saw his underling peer out of the corner of his eye but he let it go.
He went to the front desk of the clinic. This was something he needed to say personally and get the message across. Abigail Northrop sat at the reception desk sorting the outgoing mail. She looked up with a bright smile. The woman was seventy if she was a day and related to one of the board members somehow. Her hair was dyed a faded orange and her glasses were thick. The woman, usually efficient enough, was now tending to forgetfulness.
"Abigail," He barely held back from barking at her, "I thought I left instructions that I wasn't receiving calls from the press. You're to tell them I'm in meetings all day. No press Abigail."
"But it was the New York Times," She held a hand over her heart and she seemed to think it was a GOOD thing to have a renowned paper calling. "The young man sounded so nice, and he promised he'd put a positive spin on things..."
"No press, Abby. I don't care if it's the Washington Post or Wallstreet Journal. I'm not available. I've got the board breathing down my neck and the press at my throat. I'm fending off the CDC threatening to come take a look at the cases and checking us out... No press," he sliced his hand through the air to make a point.
"Down your neck and at your throat? Best wear a scarf Doctor. " She wrote the order on a bright yellow sticky note and pressed it to the edge of her computer. NO PRESS! stood out in her neet handwriting to remind her.
Valasquez wished he could force the woman to retire already. He didn't need the added aggravation.
