Rose's favorite thing about the island was all the open air. After weeks in a jail cell, she'd come to one very important conclusion: she didn't like cages. The cell hadn't even been that small, but it had been cramped enough, especially when she didn't have a way out of it that didn't include her own personal guard of enough guardians that even she wasn't stupid enough to try to fight her way out. The longer she'd spent in that cell, the closer the walls seemed to get and according to her father, it was likely the ordeal would end in her execution. Despite his assurances that he would never let that happen, she'd been more afraid than she cared to admit. It was that fear that kept her here and even though the shelter Oliver was helping her with was much less confining than the cell had been, she found herself spending as much time outside as she could. A lifetime spent on a nocturnal schedule meant she couldn't seem to soak up enough sun now that she was back on a daytime schedule and being out here served as a much needed reminder that she really was free. Free in more ways that one. Rose's whole life, she had lived by one motto. They Come First. She had been trained since birth to put moroi lives ahead of her own. For Rose, that meant not only being wiling to give her life for Lissa, but also putting Lissa's health and happiness first. It had meant giving up what she wanted to make sure her best friend stayed safe. Now, for the first time, she only had to think about what she wanted. It was almost as terrifying as it was freeing. What did she want? What was her purpose now that she didn't have anyone to protect? What would her place be here? Rose acted confident, for the most part, but she found she didn't have a single answer. The closest she'd come to feeling halfway useful was taking Finnick's suggestion about those cooking classes. Even then, it didn't feel like she was doing anything. She felt guilty, too, that she hadn't exactly been jumping to do what they were all supposed to be here to do. She knew she didn't have to have a baby until she was ready, but she hadn't even slept with anyone yet. Rose knew she probably should just do it and get it over with, but something held her back. She didn't know if it was the memories of Adrian or a hesitation in getting naked with a virtual stranger that made her hesitate. Either way, she was pretty sure the gods' patience would only go so far. She hoped she'd find herself ready before that happened. Running was an old habit she'd fallen into again here. There was a time when she'd hated it, when Dimitri had made her run all those laps in school, but that conditioning had saved her life more than once. She didn't want to lose that edge and all that aside, she found that running made it easier to clear her head and stop thinking quite so much. It was near sunset when she hit the beach, her hair pulled up into a knot, leaving the tattoos at the back of her neck exposed. She started at a brisk jog before she picked up her pace and pushed herself harder. Her anxieties faded away as she ran and she focused on the rush she got from the exercise. She wasn't really paying that much attention to where she was headed, but it didn't matter. She thought she could probably find her way back from wherever she ended up. |
