WHO Nat & Steve WHAT Ultrasound! WHEN Today! WHERE Clinic WARNINGS Cute! STATUS Closed | Completed Gdoc
Steve was nervous. They were at the point in Natasha's pregnancy that they could find out the sex of their baby, but all he wanted to know was whether or not the little one was healthy and that Natasha was just as healthy. He'd been worried more and more lately about passing on any of his many illness and afflictions onto their kid, and whether or not that would affect Natasha at all. He'd talked with Christine a little about it, and he'd acknowledged his own fears to Nat, but this was kind of the first step toward their baby really being real. This was really happening.
"Are you sure you want to know the sex of the baby?" he asked as they walked toward the medical center. Steve honestly didn't care whether they had a boy or a girl. He just wanted for them both to be healthy by the end of it. "It's up to you, whatever you want to do." Steve gave her hand a squeeze in reassurance.

After the initial bouts of nausea, Natasha had been feeling quite well and was enjoying her pregnancy. The baby was moving now which was kind of strange at first but he or she still wasn’t moving enough for Steve to feel it although they’d tried. She couldn’t wait for that, the look on his face when he felt the baby move for the first time was something Nat was looking forward to.
“Yes, I want to know,” she said and returned his squeeze. “I want to be able to give it a name and not just ‘the baby.' Plus you know I’m not big on surprises, I like to know what I’m getting into. I really don’t care of it’s a boy or a girl, as long as it gets here safely.” Natasha knew that Steve was worried and she’d done all she could to assure him that things were fine. Hopefully hearing the heartbeat and actually seeing their child would help him relax a little bit.

Steve definitely had a few ideas on options for names, but he was keeping them to himself until they knew whether they were having a girl or a boy. This was also the moment where he missed Bucky more fiercely than usual. He could really use his best pal to reassure him right about now.
"I'm glad we've got the technology here to be able to do this. I can't remember whether or not something like this would've been possible back in the 40's." He never would've had this possibility back then either, since no dame in her right mind would've looked at him twice despite Bucky's best efforts.
Once they were right in front of the medical center, he stopped them and pulled her into his arms properly. "As long as you're both healthy. That's all that matters," he replied.

She wrapped her arms around him and reached up to kiss him. “I’m glad we’ve got it here too. I have no idea when it was invented but I’m glad the gods saw fit to give the Medical Center one.” Natasha wasn’t letting on but she was a little worried herself simply because as far as she knew, she was the first person that Arva had healed to conceive. There was no reason to assume that things weren’t perfectly normal but she’d feel better when they saw the pictures. “And I’m fine,” she assured him. “So is Baby.”
Slipping out of his arms, she took his hand and they walked up the steps and into the Medical Center. Christine was sitting at the desk and she looked up when she heard them come in. “Hey guys,” she said with a smile. “I’ve got everything set up. Just go right in that little room and I’ll be there in a jiffy.”
***
He'd never get bored of kissing her. That much, Steve knew for sure, just like he knew he'd always love her and the baby growing inside of her. This baby was just the first, and they both knew that. He couldn't wait to see how their family unfolded on the Island. They'd need a proper house, but he was already thinking about the best place to build something for them.
"I know, I know," he replied, pressing another kiss against her forehead before the headed into the Medical Center. Steve was grateful it was Christine behind the desk waiting for them. He liked the other folks from the clinic just fine, but it was Christine he'd come to trust more than the others.
"Thanks Christine," he said with a grateful nod before he followed Natasha into the room she'd indicated. Steve stayed by her side the whole time, and once she was settled on the bed, he took her hand again.

She looked over at him and squeezed her hand. “Relax, everything’s fine,” she said softly. Natasha knew what this meant to him and even though she had some worries of her own, she wasn’t going to let him see them. “Pepper said the worst part was the cold stuff they squirt on your belly and you don’t even get that unless I steal the tube and catch you while you’re sleeping one night.” she smiled and picked up their joined hands, kissing his knuckles. “I love you,” she said just as Christine came back into the room, drying her hands on a paper towel.
“Okay so this is quick and painless. I put some jelly on your belly and we look for Baby,” Christine smiled at them. “Nothing to be worried about.” she helped Natasha get everything situated so that she could get to where she needed to be and talked about nothing at all really while she did it. Couples were always nervous and she wanted to put them at ease. “Here goes,” she said and squirted the ultrasonic gel on Natasha’s bump.”
“Whoa that really is cold,” Natasha said and laughed. Then she grew quiet as Christine took the probe and moved it around until suddenly she saw a smile on the other woman’s face and saw her press a button. “Listen at that,” Christine said. “There is your baby and that’s a good strong heartbeat.”

He knew intellectually that he didn't have anything to worry about, so he did his best to pull it back. If she wasn't worried as much as he was, then he didn't need to be nearly as worried as he was presenting. The last thing Steve wanted to do was make her worry more. She had the perfect way of defusing his worry though, so he couldn't help but grin at that. "I love you too," he replied softly, just for her as Christine walked into the room.
They could do this. Steve watched intently as Christine talked her way through what she was doing, and the minute he saw her face light up, he squeezed Natasha's hand. The sound of their child's heartbeat filled the room and he honestly couldn't have been happier. Steve knew what a strong heartbeat sounded like after years of hearing his own imperfect heartbeat. That was honestly the biggest relief for him.
"They're healthy. That's what matters." He glanced between Natasha and Christine. "But you can tell us what gender the baby is, right?"
***
Tears sprang to Natasha’s eyes when she heard the heartbeat. It was a sound that she had never expected to hear and it nearly overwhelmed her. It was the most amazing thing she had ever heard and she was so caught up in it for a moment that she forgot that they could find out whether the baby was a boy or a girl. Using her free hand to wipe her eyes, she looked over at Christine. “Can you tell?”
Christine laughed and turned the screen around to them. “Sure can. There is no doubt that is a baby boy in there.” He was laying in such a way that it was extremely obvious and Christine couldn’t help but laugh. “And he’s got all his parts on the inside too. His heart looks good, everything’s doing what it’s supposed to do. Dr. McCoy will look at it too because that’s just how we do it but I can promise you that everything is good.” she pushed the button and got the print out for them and handed it to Steve while she cleaned up Natasha and got everything put away. “I’ll leave you two alone,” she said. “Stay as long as you like, there’s no rush and that’s yours to keep by the way.” With a smile, she left the room.
Natasha reached for the picture and looked at it. “My god, Steve. We made that. We made a little boy” she looked up at him with a huge smile. “And he’s beautiful. Well, he’ll be beautiful when he come out. It’s kind of hard to tell what he looks like from this.”
***
Their baby was happy and healthy, a little boy. Their little boy. It was enough to make his own heart feel like it might burst. He waited for Christine to leave, his eyes firmly on the photo in his free hand until he heard the door close and Natasha reached for the picture.
"He's perfect," Steve replied, leaning down to give her a deep, lingering kiss. "I love you. I love you, I love you, I love you." He said it all between kisses as he held her close. All he wanted was to take her back to their shelter to show her just how much he loved her. Steve couldn't wait until he could feel the baby moving within her, and then to hold their son in his arms.
"You're going to be a great mother," he promised her.
***
Natasha laughed, giddy with happiness, as he kissed her. “I love you too,” she said when he finally stopped. “This is amazing….I can’t wait.” She let Steve help her sit up on the side of the table and then she looked at him. “He needs a name. We need to call him something now that we know he’s a he.” She’d been thinking about it for a few weeks and had some ideas for a boy and a girl but she wouldn’t choose anything without Steve’s approval.
“What do you think about Phillip? Phillip James. I just thought it would be fitting because if Coulson hadn’t believed in me when Clint brought me in, things would have been different. And James….well that one’s obvious. I wouldn’t dream of not having part of our son’s name not be James.”
She kissed him softly. “You are going to be a wonderful dad, you know.”
***
Steve had known three things when they decided to have a baby. One, that he loved her very much. Two, that if they had a girl, Sarah would be part of her name for his mother. The third was that if they had a boy, James needed to be part of his name. For Bucky.
The fact that she'd thought of it, too, without them even talking about it, made him love her all the more. Steve held her tightly against him. "It's perfect. Phillip James." Rogers. Romanoff. It didn't matter. Marriage wasn't common here and it was probably impossible in their world, but they could have this here. That was all that mattered.
"You'll tell Phil?" He'd have to be Phil now, if they were going to name their son after him.
***
“Phillip James Rogers,” she said. “It’s perfect.” It had never crossed Natasha’s mind to give the baby her name. They were a family and they should share a name. She’d never known what it was like to be part of a family before and now that she had that chance, she was going to take it.
“I’ll tell him. I think it will mean a lot to him,” Natasha smiled. Phil had believed in her, he had trusted Clint’s instincts and they had literally saved her life. She also knew how much he cared about Steve so between those two things, she knew he’d be pleased. Reaching up to lay a hand on Steve’s cheek, she kissed him softly. “And somewhere, somehow, Bucky knows. How, I couldn’t guess but I believe that.”
***
It was more than perfect, and the smile that lit up Steve's face said it all. "I think so, too," he replied, both of the name and how much it would mean to Phil. He returned her kiss and tried valiantly to keep himself together when she mentioned that Bucky would know, somehow. Steve hoped that Bucky was sleeping peacefully in cryostatis and that he was oblivious to everything.
"Buck knows how important he is to me. We were always gonna name our kids after each other," Steve admitted. "Used to talk about livin' next door to each other, always havin' family dinners together an' just livin' in each other's pockets 'smuch as we could. Same was usual, really." His Brooklyn always came out strong when he was talking about Bucky.
"You ready to head on home?"
***
Natasha smiled. She liked it when he talked about Brooklyn, his life there, having friends, his mother, things that she hadn’t been allowed to experience because of where she’d grown up. Things would be different for Phillip though. He’d have two parents who loved him, friends among the other children who would eventually be born and brothers and sisters someday. He would never have to doubt that he was loved and wanted.
“Yeah, I’m ready.” she paused for a minute. “I like the way that sounds. Home. I’ve never had a real one. Not until you. You’re my home.” Natasha rested her head on his shoulder briefly and then looked up. “Now help me get down from here so we can go show off our son’s first photo. Or maybe we should celebrate first and then show off the photo. I think that’s the better option.”
***
Steve grinned. 'Home is where the heart is' definitely counted with Natasha, and now their son. "Celebrate first," he decided, stealing a quick kiss before he helped her down from the little table. "Then you can share the news with Phil and I'll let Pepper know." He had a thought then, about godparents, but he wasn't sure if that was even put into practice on the island. There wouldn't be a way to baptize their son, not by a Catholic Priest. He took a deep breath and let it go. There wasn't anything he'd trade for that, and he could still raise their son believing in God, and respecting the Gods and Goddesses of the island.
